A few friends and I ate at Mar'sel while we were staying at Terranea resort. Overall, service was slow and food was just average, especially for the high price. We came when it was somewhat dark, so the beautiful setting was kind of lost. If you are going to go here, go during the daylight hours, because otherwise you are just looking at a pitch black ocean if you are dining outside. The menu is not huge, but we were a larger group and shared a bunch of items. The burrata appetizer was a total miss – one of the smallest portions of cheese I’ve ever received, and it was covered in an Asian sesame dressing that totally overpowered the delicate flavor of the cheese. I was just eating sesame dressing. The lobster pasta was not an elegant dish and was covered in brown sauce so you couldn’t really tell the pasta from the lump lobster meat. The Shishito peppers were a good shared plate and probably the best food we had. Service was quite slow, even though the restaurant was not full. They stacked dirty plates next to everyone’s ears as they cleared, which is fine at an IHOP, but not at a restaurant with these prices. Drinks took quite a while to come, even glasses of wine. The wine list is varied, but not deep. For the California options, there were not many good options and it just focused on large brands that the distributor has. Nothing unique, and not much local wine except a Catalina wine. As this is the premium restaurant for this resort, I was disappointed, but not surprised, as Terrenea itself was disappointing. Overall, the setting is pretty, but that’s the only thing to recommend about this restaurant.
