I highly recommend this hidden gem of a Japanese sushi restaurant. The omakase is delicious and fresh, and the staff are attentive and quick. A must-visit for sushi lovers.

Authentic Japanese restaurant, one of the best! From the beginning to the end was at a perfection, enjoyed very much. Service was excellent and quiet ambiance. Fresh fish, gentle spice/condiments, and two types of uni w ariake nori were just amazing. Dessert was something you must try, one of a kind. Definitely will come back.
Be the first to ReplyFirst just want to say, I think people are WAYYYYY too
First just want to say, I think people are WAYYYYY too picky/snobby about "ambiance". you can tell this establishment has so much heart and the service was PHENOMENAL. Such attentive staff. And in general the restaurant is so cute/very clean. Ok now for the food, I came here last night and sat at the bar. We did the omakase and it was definitely the best sushi I've ever had in my life. The sushi chef smiled every time and explained everything we ate. The quality, speed, cuts, and flavors were 10/10. I went to Nobu a few weeks back and you pay more at that restaurant for sushi that is a lot worse. I can't believe how amazing each bite was! I'm still thinking about the glass shrimp. Also If you're unsure about this place because of "the vibe or decor" DAVID CHANG was sitting right behind us with a party. I would trust his choice of restaurant over most people. In the end, this is a special place to me and I'm so happy I got to experience it.

Their fish was super fresh on a Saturday night. Tons of options (especially shellfish free options).

This is a very unassuming sushi spot and you would never know it has amazing sushi. We did outdoor dining omakase and fell in love with every bite. The fish were so fresh and unique. There was nothing fancy about the sushi and it was a very traditional omakase. The space is pretty small so make sure you book well in advance. The service was very friendly and attentive even though we were the only table outside. Can't wait to come back!
Be the first to ReplyGreat experience.
Small place in a strip mall; cozy and intimate. Casual yet food is amazing and fine dining quality. They were very attentive and friendly. Definitely recommend!

We just visited this remarkable place and enjoyed every piece of sushi and appetizers .The restaurant is cozy and super neat. The whole staff greeted us warmly and we were seated promptly. We ordered some seaweed and egg plant appetizers and they were delicious! Out of many including chef's choice, my favorites were toro(it literally melted in my mouth) and uni (Santa Barbara). They were super fresh and buttery... Yum!Our server, Mimi was so professional and pleasant. She paired cold sake w/ our dishes and everything was on point. She answered all our questions about the menu patiently. Thank you Matsumoto for such a pleasant evening!

The combination of sasami and sushi rice is perfection. They really know how to make good quality sushi rice along with quality fish.
Be the first to ReplyThe sushi is good but for the price you pay I'd expect so
The sushi is good but for the price you pay I'd expect so much more. Also, the sushi rice was falling apart. I think your money is better spent elsewhere there are so many other omakase places which offer better price value ratios. Staff was attentive.

Incredible sushi meal! First off this location is in a strip mall in mid LA area. The restaurant itself is not "fancy" as one other yelper complained it is not for first dates. Well guess what?!? I had a first date meet there last night and it was nothing short of an amazing time. The restaurant is sparkly clean, the servers are sweet and professional. How about the nothing short of AMAZING sushi?!? I cannot even recall all the amazing sushi names since we both ordered the Omakase Chef's tasting menu consisting of something like 20-25 sushi items. It you look at the attached menu, it will give you an idea of the amazing array of many of the individual special fish sampled. This is a $$$$ place but my date and I concluded you get what you pay for and this was indeed worth the price since it was special (first date) and the meal was exceptional. Just about every sushi item was so delicious I cannot state my favorite. But a perennial favorite, the supreme toro (itself was delicious), rated as average to slightly above when compared to the other sushi in this amazing chef's tasting menu. This speaks volumes about the high quality and taste of all the different fish sampled. Thank you Matsumoto for making this first date worth coming to your restaurant!
Be the first to ReplyIt's been a while I've have sushi that transcends my heart.
I used to frequent this spot when under the previous owner and I remembered how perfect this place was. I was pleasantly surprised that Matsumoto has not only maintained such excellence but in many ways superseded my expectations. It was a nonstop barrage of delectable choice of fish, I didn't even bother to take pics until towards the end. The uni from Hokkaido was a jolt of flavoring, my mind traveled in bliss. A pure delight!
Be the first to ReplyThis is a review for the omakase.
It was 24 nigiri pieces for about $250 after tax and tip. ย Some pieces were amazing, some tasted a bit fishy/not fresh and/or overwhelmed by wasabi. The majority was average and it certainly was a delicious meal, but from my experience, there is much better and consistent quality omakase in the area at a similar price point. ย As others have said, not the best ambience also. ย Not a place to go if you're trying to impress a date. ย I really enjoyed how it was served with 3 pieces each that complimented one another. ย My favorite was the finale getting to try Santa Barbara and Hokkaido uni side by side. Service and chef were great! If I were in the area, would certainly drop by for not omakase.
Be the first to ReplyThe omakase was absolutely incredible.
Chef Matsumoto did an amazing job and one of the best sushi experiences we have had. Unique, flavorful, melt in your mouth sushi. This was an unforgettable experience.

I have never been mistreated so horribly at a restaurant in my life. They told me to keep it down when I was not loud at all. Sure we were the last people in the restaurant but we ate a lot and our bill was not cheap. The waitress told us we needed to go home and kicked us out. I've never been so disrespected in a restaurant ever. I will never ever come back. BTW we've been customers for years and am shocked by the way they treated us. I've never been treated so horribly. I'm so disappointed.

If you're mulling over whether you want to go to Matsumoto- I highly recommend you go now- it is season for the delicacy that is seiko gani and it is fantastic. Female snow crabs are allowed to be fished just two months of the year (November, December) and is not to be missed! A feast for the eyes as well!

I was traveling to California to visit family and to celebrate my birthday and some recent professional successes, so after much research I decided to treat myself to the sushi bar omakase at matsumoto. And what a treat it was enjoying nigiri prepared by one of LA's master sushi chefs. This was undoubtedly one of the best omakases I've ever had. If you eat here it's about the fish and oh how varied and delicious it was. Was it expensive? Yes. ย Was it worth it? I thought so with the understanding that sushi of this caliber is going to be very pricey. ย Chef Matsumoto delighted in my enthusiasm for the meal and patently explained each course. The pairings were interesting- rather than "flights" - say a toro flight or an aji or tai flight one, each course (with the exception of the uni one) consisted of different fish. There's nothing flashy about Matsumoto. You go there for the fish. Not a scene. Not mass produced sushi. But for quiet and quality. I shall definitely return. One of my favorite meals ever.
Be the first to ReplyTheir sushi tastes like sushi in Japan.
I had the special assorted sushi take out. It comes with miso soup. I called to order and picked up 35 minutes later. The process was simple and food was good. The dining room looked really small. The restaurant is in a strip mall with limited parking.

Absolutely fantastic experience last night! Food was excellent, portions were wonderful, and service was stellar. Could not be happier. If whoever is reading this is deciding where to go for sushi, please stop your search at Matsumoto and get a reservation there ASAP. Will be back real soon!

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much when I pulled up due to this place being in the corner of a strip mall but it was amazing. My husband and I had a reservation for the sushi bar which was omakase. Delicious! It is pricey - about $600/couple with tip but we got alcohol, dessert, and probably about 25 pieces of nigiri each. I really didn't mind paying it the quality of the food but I can see how the location/atmosphere might throw some people off. I, on the other hand, was happy to get a super high quality meal and not having to dress up/put make up on (it's very casual and I even saw people wearing sweatpants). Totally my vibe - will definitely visit again when in
Be the first to ReplyMy husband and I came here for a special dinner to
My husband and I came here for a special dinner to celebrate our anniversary. I picked Matsumoto as it was very highly rated, and was one of the few omakase restaurants offering outdoor dining. I made the reservation online, and it was easy to make about two weeks ahead of the reservation date. At the time of booking, it was stated that they had an outdoor dining area. When we arrived, we saw that the restaurant did have one outdoor table, but the restaurant is small and located in a strip mall. The table that we were seated at looked onto the carpark and was right outside of a laundromat, so not the best in terms of ambience. However, the restaurant by far made up with the quality of the sushi. We opted for the omakase, which consisted of over 20 pieces. Our server was very kind and efficient, making sure our every need was taken care of. My highlights were the baby shrimp, otoro, and trio of uni, but honestly, everything was spectacular. We finished the savory courses with vanilla pudding and green tea mochi. Would highly recommend for an amazing dinner.
