Maximo Bistrot Heroica Matamoros Reviews from The Last Year
Innovative Mexican Cuisine Which Does Not Always Work
I was really looking forward to this dinner at this celebrated restaurant. The seats were crowded together, and the restaurant was so loud you could hardly hear anyone else at the table. We chose the celebrated tasting menu of 12 courses which had many "hits and misses" depending on the course. Some of the highlights were the Baja Oyster; the Birria of Lamb; the Rabbit Ravioli and the Wagyu Rib Eye. Other courses such as the Abalone did not work. The restaurant also ignored allergy warnings and thankfully, we caught the mistake. Service was professional; however, appeared to be over-worked in the chaos of the restaurant. Drinks were well-made, and the restaurant has a nice very expensive wine list. The restaurant is probably one of the most expensive dining spots in Mexico DF. I would carefully recommend and would return; however, I would choose the a la carte menu.
Truly a bad experience
We ate at multiple high end restaurants while at Mexico City, the food was comparable but nothing exceptional. The staff were not friendly and our server was rude! I think the only reason they are getting business is because they have a reputation!! Food was ok but what destroyed the experience for me was the staff!
Good until it wasn’t
The food and service was great, until the end. We waited an inordinate amount of time for our bill. Three of the waitstaff acknowledged that we needed our check. We finally walked up to the hostess. An unfortunate ending to what would otherwise have been a great dining experience.
Awful Experience all the way!
I had not been to Maximo Bistrot since before the COVID pandemic and the last time was amazing. So I was especially happy to go again. What a disappointment! The tostadas were awfully spicy, I could not eat them! My mouth was hurting! After that I could even taste the wine….it tasted extremely bitter ! My palate was so damaged that I lost the proper perception of flavors! Then they brought the fish: it was dry and tasted like burned ! Such a bad experience! I could not eat it either. Service was super slow. The cherry on the pie was when they brought the bill. Without letting me know in any manner at the time of punching my credit card the amount charged was actually higher than the bill : they added 15 p cent without notice, did nit say anything and did not give me the choice of the amount of the tip! They just got me by surprise! Now I understand why Michelin did not give any star to that restaurant when tonight for the first time they awarded stars to mexican restaurants! I will not go back !
To the Max!
This was our first time to this restaurant, which ended up being our favorite meal in CDMX. Service was incredible, even before we sat down. We arrived late due to bad traffic and the staff let us know, with a smile that the we had more than enough time before the next party arrived. It took us just a few minutes to know what we wanted to order, and we did great. Up first was the Sonora scallops aguachile, which arrived with an unexpected avocado puree and chile sauce and housemade tortillas. It was quintessential Mexican cuisine: simple ingredients that together were just amazing. Then we both ordered the Wagyu beef options: she went with the steak and chose tongue. As she put it, the steak was like “beef butter”, amazingly soft and flavorful. The tongue was delicious as it was served with a mole and beans, along with tortillas so I could recreate how this traditional dish is commonly eaten. This is restaurant is at the top of our list for when we return to Mexico City.
Maximo always delivers.
I haven’t been back at Maximo since 2019, so I was eager to visit them at their new location. We tried the fixed menu, and althought it was very goog, I think the menu selection was no the best. I saw reviews with some dishes that easly look much savory and complex than the one in the fixed one. But it is still one of the best restaurants in CDMX. I look forward in clming back and trying other options a-la.carte.
One of the best dining experiences in Mexico City
I had the great pleasure of visiting Mexico City recently. My friend and colleague is a certified foodie, and she took me to Maximo. this was a sublime experience on so many levels. The food, the people, the atmosphere, and I got to meet the chef! My friend knows him, and we had a lovely conversation. It is so great to see someone who works their passion. We had an amazing cocktail to start (mescalina with hibiscus) and our starters included the kampachi (visit the menu on the website :) ) and another amazing raw fish dish. We also had the onion cooked in whey with cheese, and for dinner shared the tagliatelle with ragout and an amazing Wagyu rib eye. did we have room for dessert? No, but we had one anyway. The amazing French toast with compote. the food was amazing, but the people and the environment made this meal extra special. the chef, Lalo Garcia, has a very interesting and inspiring story. I hope to come back here some day.
Excellent fine cuisine...somewhat expensive but very delicious.
Very very fine dining. Good athmosphere, service is great, clean, fine restaurant with extraordinary dishes. Congrats to this high quality chef. Maybe one of the best 5-10 restaurants in Mexico City (I was born here and in 58 years rarely have I eaten better than here). Prices are much too high. In my opinion, according to the value, prices should be 15-20% lower.
Great in Industrial/Chic Space
Amazing food and service. The restaurant is very expensive, but definitely worth it if you want really creative, high end food. We were not that hungry so only had 2 appetizers and an entree and that was plenty for my wife and me. The portions are definitely good sized for restaurants of this quality. We had the burrata with fennel, pickled peaches, etc. and the onion in cheese and whey for appetizers. And Bronzino as an entree over a crab/frijoles mixture. All were amazing. The only negative is the wine list. The list is extensive, but the prices are crazy. I would say most bottles are 50% to 100% higher than what they would cost in a US restaurant. However, Cocktails were really good and fairly priced.
The Menu Lies - Don’t be Gaslit by Maximo
TLDR Buyer beware! Don’t come for the tasting menu - you won’t be able to order. We were very excited to come to Maximo and had heard great things. To start - everything is crazy slow and the kitchen, staff, and menu lie about what is available. They advertise a great tasting menu, but it’s not available half of the day, depending when you sit down. The kitchen closes for hours at a time and they won’t let you order. For context, we had a 3:45pm reservation, and sat down around 4pm. We didn’t order drinks or food until 4:30pm - we ordered the Tasting Menu. Around 15 mins later someone came out to let us know the kitchen was closed and we couldn’t order the tasting menu. Wanted to love it, there is great ambiance…but this was our worst experience in Mexico City eating (and we’ve done a lot of fine dining here). Awful experience - would not recommend. Avoid. The communication and service was terrible for a restaurant of this caliber and price point ($200USD per person)
Great innovative food, but pricey
This place is special! The food is creative blends of Mexican and French influences, and the dishes are truly unique. The setting is a bit casual - wooden tables without table cloths for example, in a warehouse style place. Romantic vibes. Dishes-wise, I'd recommend: - Scallops, just amazing! Taste was out of this world. Pricey though. - Soft shell crab "tostada". Innovative and beautifully done. - Beef tongue. Melt in the mouth - Kampachi "sashimi style". Super fresh, and tasty. The onions and cheese dish that our neighbours had looked good, and also recommended multiple times by others. Overall, the food is good. Pricing is expensive! The menu is online. The portions are rather big; I'd say 2 starters and 2 mains between two people might be a bit too much. We had 3 starts and 1 main, and felt really full by the end, no space for dessert.
Extraordinary experience
My favorite restaurant in Mexico city. The food is amazing and the story of the Chef Lalo Garcia is absolutely fascinating. I decided to come to the restaurant after reading the book titled the Migrant Chef about the life and journey of Chef Garcia. The entire dining experience was unique. Everything we tried on the menu was delicious. Service was extraordinary. I especially enjoyed interacting with Chef Garcia and getting his perspective on running such a successful operation. His vision for contributing to the economy and helping his staff prosper is inspirational.
Excellent meal. Great atmosphere
We thought the hood was very good and a good break from traditional Mexican food. Really a 4.5. Pretty place very good service. Way better than Puljo
