This is the kind of resturant where the whole staff care about what they are doing. As a result, the atmosphere is welcoming, the vibes cozy, and the food delicious. It's a perfect spot for a lingering date night. The best part of the night was when Chef Genet herself brought out her famous Dorowat for our party. It's earthy and deeply flavorful, a real treat. The vegetable dishes were my favorites, they all tasted very fresh and bright. A few words of caution, finding parking in the area can be tricky. The space is a little dark and echoy, so guests with vision or hearing problems may struggle.
Be the first to ReplyThis was the most amazing Ethiopian place I've ever had.
Came here for my birthday and so glad we did. I HIGHLY recommend the Dorowot. It had so many complex flavors and it was like nothing else I've had. The ambience was soothing and classy and the service was very friendly and helpful

3 stars???? This is the best Ethiopian around. Get the vegan combo. I'm thrilled to hear that the dining room is reopening, because eating out of styrofoam isn't my ideal situation, but it was worth the sacrifice to the environment (sorry planet Earth). Go there now.....you're welcome.
Be the first to ReplyReally tasty, like your auntie prepared a home cooked meal.
Very little grease and not overly seasoned, the veggie combo was outstanding and the chicken tibs added were a punched up delight. I'd definitely recommend this spot if you're ok with Carey away.

I've actually never eaten Ethiopian food that wasn't really good until now. The injera was thin rather than spongy and it was bland rather than lightly sour. Each little veg dish was so dry that it was sticking in my throat. The garlic in the dressing of the salad left an aftertaste well after I stopped eating maybe because it was old or possibly jarred. Anyway, I don't see what the hype is about at all, sorry.

yup,you have to try it I highly recommend.your taste buds will love it.

So, so delicious and I will definitely be ordering again! Vegetarian combo is to die for. I used to love Bete Lukas in Portland when I lived there and have been looking for a comparable Ethiopian place in LA. Still love Bete Lukas (!!) but Meals by Genet blows that place outta the water. An absolute must if you live in the area (or even if you have to drive 40min like me!). Thanks for a wonderful meal, Genet!

Meals by Genet is in the center of Little Ethiopia on Fairfax. It isn't open for dining, but you can order meals to go at the end of the week. When you phone in your order, Genet? is so friendly and treats you like family. You are instructed to go to the back lot where you call and someone brings it to a table. It all seems like you're trying to get to Oz. Except, Fairfax is not the yellow brick road; follow the unnamed alley to the west. Doro Wat: With a giant round injera (sourdough flatbread made of fermented teff flour) as your plate, spoon some of the doro wat on top. Doro wat is a spicy chicken stew made of slow cooked onions, clarified butter, and fragrant spices like cardamom, cinnamon, and cumin. The heat comes from berbere, a spice mix of peppers, garlic, ginger, and many others. Genet's version is mild, but the flavors commingle nicely. The chicken has been stewed so long that even the bones are falling apart. Tear off a piece of injera and scoop a bit of chicken, sauce, and the hard-boiled egg.

We've been trying all the LA Ethiopian restaurants and finally had a chance to try Genet's food after visiting LACMA. It is a shame that she has not opened fully since covid because the experience would have been better had we been able to dine in. We always like to get the veggie combo, so we ordered the Idli's Vegetarian Combo and the Tofu Tibs. We liked all the vegetable sides but her Shiro was one of the best we've had. On the other hand, the Mesir was not our favorite because she does it in a different style and leaves the red lentils firm. We enjoyed the Tibs and found it quite tasty, with a slightly crispy texture and a bit of spice. The beets, daal, green lentils, cabbage and carrots, collard greens and yellow split peas all tasted as expected and were well-executed.

We wanted to try Ethiopian food and were told this was the place to go. Unfortunately, it's take-out only now, and with little instruction on how best to eat the dishes, how to use the condiments, etc., I felt we were left without having fully benefited from what would otherwise have been a unique experience. Just a lot of food thrown into a takeout clamshell. Not much fun.

Ordered the beef tibs (which were dry and sub par) and was absolutely shocked at how small the portion size was. This was a $25 serving (which includes injera), a complete ripoff. Never coming back here again, save your money and go anywhere else. The worst take out experience I've had in a while.
Be the first to ReplyI have been going here for decades.
An iconic place by Genet who cooks better than most Ethiopian mothers.
Be the first to ReplyVery expensive and the serving sizes were very small.
Many better choices in little Ethiopia for a much more reasonable price

If you're looking for authentic Ethiopian food, this is the place to go. We live on the East Side and stopped by after dropping a friend off at LAX. This has been on our travel the world in LA restaurant list for awhile. Delicious food, kind service, and overall a fantastic experience. I can't wait to come back and try the Ethiopian beer. Thank you Meals by Genet!

Ganet's food is wonderful!!! I've had Ethiopian food in Denver?Boulder at the supposed best Ethiopian restaurants (eh). I'd fly to L.A. just to eat at Genet's. So delicious!!!

Chicken Ria Genet 's Dorowot in the middle, Tofu Tibs, Beef tibs and all the veggies - always the most amazing meal
Be the first to ReplyThis is one of my very favorite restaurants anywhere.
The food is exquisite.I called today to place an order for takeout and the voicemail said they are closed for at least a month. I hope everyone is ok. Wishing you the best Genet, thank you for always making some of the tastiest food. I'm looking forward to ordering from you again.

Ordered take-out and was sooooo impressed with the quality of service and food! The person who took our order was really kind over the phone and was able to explain the menu options. They also provided clear directions for safe pick-up.AND THE FOOD. IT WAS SO GOOD. We got one of the lamb stews and the veggie platter combination. Oh my gosh. The lamb paired with the injera was JUST SO DELECTABLE. TENDER. JUICY. FLAVORED SO WELL. Definitely recommend this place for all Ethiopian food lovers.

The best Ethiopian food in West LA!!! Hands down! the customer service is 10/10. While I'm west African, I know very little about Ethiopian food and they were very patient with our many questions regarding entrees. food is only available for takeout but it's worth it!! I loveeeeeed our meal and I will be back. I hope to try more food items!

Great service, great food!! Almost gave up on Ethiopian food but this saved the day. Veggie combo was great, so many unique but delicious flavors. If you eat meat, it goes great with a stewed meat - we got dorowot (spicy chicken with a boiled egg) and the seanye (finely ground beef in a pepper sauce) They only do carry out - the waiter was very patient and helpful. Loved his suggestions. Will be back!!
Be the first to ReplyFirst time ordering here and it did not disappoint.
The food was excellent! Highly recommend the lamb dish.

Been absolutely DYING to check this place out and I finally did... LA gasses this place up like crazy and I love Ethiopian food so here we go. Before I begin my review, I'd like to establish a little bit of credibility...I first tried and fell in love with Ethiopian food in San Diego at the Awash Ethiopian restaurant. I am a sucker for some Awaze Tibs, definitely give those a try if you like beef in a delicious sauce.Coming back to LA, I made Buna Ethiopian food my go-to, but still, I had to try Meals by Genet. We ordered the Yebere Siga Tibs, Ria's chicken dorowot, the lamb stew, and the vegetarian platter.Taste: Lamb Stew - Delicious, soft and shredded lamb with a spicy kick, comes with a soft boiled egg. Good portion size.YAY/NAY: YAYRia Genets Chicken Dorowot - Has a an almost nourishing chicken taste, soft pieces of shredded chicken in a unique tasting stew. Good portion size.YAY/NAY: YAYYebere tibs - Cube sized cuts of beef. Nothing special about these in terms of flavor and the portion size does not reflect in the price. Prepare to get roasted if you order this. We got a pretty small amount and we ordered 2 separate containers.YAY/NAY: BIG NAYVegetarian platter: 10+ different vegetarian sides in a 4 sided platter. It's a bit all over the place and the sides are sharing the same space. Some sides are quite small compared to others (not talking about the lettuce salad). For the price point, you can get this better and cheaper elsewhere. YAY/NAY: NAYOverall, I am happy I tried this place and gave them my business, but I likely won't be coming back here. A bit too expensive in price and the take-out-only service does hinder the experience since your food is a bit colder by the time you get home and some foods aren't properly portioned or spaced.3.5 stars out of 5
Be the first to Replymy go to Ethiopian place.
Family run and operated with the BEST tofu tibs (& vegetarian platter). love love love
Be the first to ReplyContinually amazed by Genet's cooking.
Though I never had the chance to dine-in, the pickup process is pretty smooth if you call ahead in time (suggested one hour or more before your pickup time on weekends). Meals by Genet is NOT CHEAP but always worth it in my opinion. I tried Messob and Lalibela nearby and prefer Genet's food by far. My favorites are: - Veggie combo: I love the fresh salad and the misir wot, though they're all great!- Chicken Dorowat: A must! Sooo flavorful and unique! The beef ribs: ribeye cooked nicely, very moist. The takeout could use some extra injera in the servings but all around I think all the rewards and hype around meals by Genet are well worth it! Will be going back to this place for all my Ethiopian food cravings!
