I can confidently say that Michael's was the worst meal of my life, with terrible service and even worse food. I might have well lit $600 on fire. While some might call this an exaggeration, it's not. Here's why. Service:It took 35 minutes to get my group's drinks. And when first drinks arrived, only two out of the five came. The other three took another 10 minutes, ruining our cheers. While it was slightly amusing that Michael, himself, the charming owner of the restaurant, came by our table to say hello, it was telling he did so before the food came and we could complain. The rest of the waitstaff might have well been on drugs: snoozy and slightly amused. Now to the foodSalmon Carpaccio:Tasted like smoked salmon that came straight out of the package. Slimy and wet. Pizza:I'm 99% sure this was a digorno pizza. Chewy crust, tasteless sauce. Mussels:Perhaps the grossest dish of the meal--see attached picture. Raw tomatoes, specks of cheese, in muscles? We ended up paying one of our group $100 to finish this dish.Rib eye:$125 dollars for a chewy, fatty, sloppy slab of meat. We could only eat 1/3 of this. Duck:Overcooked, tough, gamy.. Sourdough bread:Halfway decent Olives in the martini:Halfway decent Mixed nuts:Halfway decent It's unfathomable how this restaurant was crowded. One again, avoid like the plague.

Walking in the smell of yummy warm Bourbon Apple Cider welcome you at the door; don't even like a bourbon but on a chilly rainy night is a must, genius bartender! The food is also perfectly selected for the season, hearty fall/winter veggies compliments the meat in brilliant and vivid way. Just writing about it and looking at the picture "mouth-watering", must go back soon and try some of the other amazing creations! The nature Zen feeling atmosphere also contributed to the great experience.Thank you!

Michael's was divine. We came here for the happy hour - made a reservation a week out. Food: spectacular. Drinks: some of the best. Service: Seamless. Prices: so so reasonable for downtown Santa Monica. If you're still questioning it, just book the reservation. This place has a lovely, loungey ambiance and a gorgeous dining patio. We tried the mixed greens salad, duck wings, oysters, fries, and tuna taco from the menu. Would eat each of those items again. The MSM was one of the yummiest cocktails I've had. If you're a vodka drinker this is a must.

What a great hole in the wall neighborhood spot. The ambiance and design of the restaurant was beautiful and the drinks and food were great. $3 oysters?? Let's gooo! All this made for a perfect date night, but I had to write a review because our bartender was superb. I wish we could remember his name, but we will just have to come back again on a Wednesday!

Made a reservation on Tuesday December 27th 2022 for the same evening. Then realised it was raining (patio seating) and too damp to outside for my elderly companions. Cancelled perhaps 2 hours after I had made the initial reservation. They've now charged me $160.00 cancellation fee. I called and was told "this is our policy". I will, of course, dispute the change but this is absurd. I've been going to Michael's for the last 30 + years and while the food has gone downhill we still enjoy the ambiance. No longer.

I came here to meet up with a friend one day during the summer and it was such a lovely experience. We were drawn to this place by the ambience and back patio seating, and had a lovely time while here. We shared Brussel sprouts, Margherita pizza, and the Truffle/mushroom dish, the latter of which is my favorite! The chef/owner (Michael) also came and personally greeted all of his guests, which I thought was such a nice, kind addition to the evening. This place is a bit pricey, however. Overall, would recommend for a nice date night or celebration given the ambience and cozy patio vibes.

I am embarrassed i have to resort to a yelp review to have my voice heard by ownership. I came here last night to celebrate a family members birthday. I picked the place due to its rich history and awesome ambiance of the back patio, and because the website claims it had a michelin award. This all sounded like a makings of an unforgettable experience...that is until we got our food.Im not the picky yelper guy, or the douchey socialite type who normally would do this, but out of sheer disappointment for myself for not speaking up at the restaurant, i came to yelp and saw many similar reviews which makes me more upset this kind of stuff is becoming the norm here. It was so bad, i woke up at 6am with anxiety thinking about how terrible our very expensive meal was. Bread $104 pieces of bread and a smear of butter hanging off the side of plate. Served Cold(This little bit of bread at a place like this should be free, come on michael) OlivesHonestly the best thing we had. Which is a weird flex from a michelin rated place. Market SaladWhat was from the market? The 3 slices of radishes? Bland dressing, we each ate one bite and left if sitting there in the boneyard of uneaten foodCauliflowerThis was decent, i wont slander it. But hard to write something nice about it since it was sandwiched in between so much uneaten food. Rotisserie ChickenThis was the fail of the show. It was came out last and was literally cold. Not room temp, not chilly. Mf cold as hell. Like it was in a fridge and they microwaved it for 20 seconds and then hastily threw it on top of my plate. Ju sauce also cold, the actual physical plate was also cold. Only thing holding heat was the 2 fingerling potatoes under the chicken. For $30 i would have rather taken the family to popeyes. Truffle pastaAlso came slightly cold, nice serving size, but plated a little boring, but its pasta so im not expecting art. Middle of the road pasta. Really just paid a lot for shavings of truffles. Service 4/10What happened to our waiter? I think he took a midshift break on us. Maybe thats why the food got so cold. Also the shifty bus boy took a half drinken cocktail sitting in front of me and just took off with it like a seagull stealing food off your picnic table. For $15 cocktail id really enjoy to finish it. Restaurant was only 30% capacity so it wasnt due to being overly busy Patio10/10This is all you are really paying for after coming here For myself and then reading the reviews. Food1/10Vastly Overpriced, uncreatively plated, unpassionately served, cold and horribly disappointed. We paid over $400 for 3 people to dine here and had to put a deposit on a credit card to make the reservation. Also they ask whats the reason for coming when you make your reservation, i told them we were celebrating a birthday. But staff made No mention of birthday and no celebratory desert. So whats the point of asking if you clearly don't care?Im not sure if michael is the big portly balder man walking around the restaurant floor, but if he is he did not once come to our table, which some of the the other diners have claimed in reviews, if he had i would have pulled him to the side to let him know how sorely disappointed i was in our experience. We did see a celebrity actor there however which is the epitome of living in LA --- overpriced ambiance with laughable service, and marginal quality food buuut wait is that rob reiner over there????
Be the first to ReplyHorrible service, the worst.
Had to chase our appetizers (arrived 50 minutes after ordering). Had to chase our entrees which arrived freezing cold. Cold steak, cold duck and cold chicken. There are so many great Santa Monica restaurants to choose from. Michael's has officially jumped the shark. Won't be back. Waste of a Saturday dinner out.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing.
. service was extremely slow.. need either more wait staff or more staff in the kitchen. While the garden patio remains the highlight... the food has become increasingly mediocre. Salad, even with additional dressing was tasteless .The octopus appetizer was far too chewy/ tough. The waigu beef was excellent.. desert were miniscule and at best mediocre . At. $100 pp this was not the meal we expected from Michael's. Possibly a new chef ? Disappointing evening! So sad.
Be the first to ReplyI ate here last night.
The food is good, the vibe is cool. Seemingly most diners were regulars or knew each other, which was interesting. Main issue: We were seated on the enclosed back patio and there was a rat running around all night less than a foot from our table. The staff was aware of the situation but said nothing to our table (they reseated a few other diners (who were regulars) that were also sitting next to the rat.) we even mentioned it to a waiter who just sort of laughed? The rat went back and forth from our table up to a tree that brought it above the kitchen. Felt like ratatouille but less cute. Because this was a real, live rat, probably with diseases within inches of where we were eating and the kitchen. All that said, I would come back for the wagyu bolognese.

I had been excited to try Michael's for some time and am sad to report such a disappointing meal. While the ambiance and service was FANTASTIC, the food and drink left a whole lot more to be desired. Was disheartened to learn that the specialty cocktail was pre-made in a batch. I was equally saddened by how borderline uneatable the french onion soup was. Our entrees and desserts were fine but just that. May be worth sticking to Michael's for happy hour and exploring elsewhere for dinner

This place was extremely overpriced with the most thoroughly mediocre food you could imagine. I spent an insane amount on steak that was not salted properly. A friend ordered a salad that was literally big pieces of unseasoned lettuce. The French onion soup tasted weird in a bad way. We picked this restaurant based on the pictures of the really nice backyard aesthetic on their website. Instead we were sat next to the bathrooms for no reason and had one of the rudest servers I have ever experienced. The server yelled at one of my friends for trying to order the appetizers before the main entree (???) and tried to argue with another member of our party when she pointed out that they did not give her something she had ordered, but had charged it on the bill anyway. It was terrible service and I'm literally from NYC. Not worth it in the least.

We walked in on a Saturday evening and we're treated to an outdoor table and heater. Within minutes the owner himself, Michael, came to our table to thank us for visiting his restaurant. We were both appreciative and gracious for the kind gesture and will make it a point to visit again in the near future. The service was outstanding and the bar area was lively and energetic. We look forward to visiting your establishment again very soon. Thank you Michael sir you are a gentleman and your staff is dedicated to detail.

Came here with some friends A week ago and had a very nice time. Started with some happy hour drinks at the bar and got some really good recommendations from the bartender. The back of the restaurant (where we had dinner) is really beautiful and the ambience is immaculate. The cocktails were really good, and our appetizers were amazing. The beet salad, the mussels, and the hamachi were delicious! One of our main dishes was brought out cold but our server was very sweet and attentive. She made jokes and gave us a complimentary glass of wine! I dont remember her name but she had curly brown/blonde hair and was incredibly sweet and charming. She kept checking in and seemed to really know the menu! Michael (the owner) came over to introduce himself to the table and check in which I think is a really nice personal touch you dont get to experience at a lot of restaurants. Really happy all around. Will be back and will definitely ask for the same server!!

Been hearing for years how great Michael's is and was really looking forward to our first dinner there. The covered patio was beautiful though very cold and heaters we're useless- needed to sit with my coat on. Started with salad that was just lettuce and barely any dressing. Then the Dover sole was really dry and dull; my wife's halibut with sweet sauce and undercooked/raw; cauliflower also too sweet and uninspired. Dessert Tarte Tatin was minuscule and nothing special while the brownie tasted no better than store bought. Service was nothing special either and in all our party all agreed this place was much ado about nothing - obviously had seen better days.
Be the first to ReplyDon't go here .
Literally every dish we had from seafood to beet salad tasted so bland. It tasted like nothing. Not only was the food bad but the server was very strange. She came to our table maybe twice and got weirded out when we asked for another drink. I do not recommend completely overpriced
Be the first to ReplyThe restaurant was pretty good overall, but I have mixed
The restaurant was pretty good overall, but I have mixed feelings. We went early to have happy hour, which was lovely. We had oysters, cocktails, and tuna tartare tacos, which were all incredible. Our waiter for happy hour was great -- she recommended good dishes (the tacos!) and transferred our bill to the dining room when we moved inside after happy hour for our dinner reservation. Inside in the dining area, the waiter (an older French gentleman) was extremely pushy. I asked him what his favorite dish was on the menu, and instead, he told us exactly what to order and picked the most expensive dishes on the menu and peer pressured us into following his recommendations, when I had simply asked him what his favorite dish was. We ended up spending $100+ more than we had intended. The meal was really good, but the service interaction really ruined it. Furthermore, our waiter never checked to see if we enjoyed the meal. Instead, for each course, he would simply drop it off, say "bon appetit" and run away. At the end of the meal, he dropped the bill on the table without asking if we were finished -- I was planning on ordering another glass of wine, so that's missed revenue for the restaurant. The restaurant was also so dark you could barely read the menu or see the food (this was a challenge when trying to scrape out the bone marrow for our appetizer). We are millennials with 20/20 vision so we could deal with using the tiny tea light candle for sight, but older people in the restaurant all had their phone flashlights out to be able to read the menu. On a positive note, Michael (the founder/owner) came by to say hi to every table, which was lovely.
Be the first to ReplyWe're so happy that Michael's survived the pandemic.
The front of the restaurant has been reconfigured for more outside dining, including bar seating. We called for a last-minute reservation when our previous reservation did not pan out, and they had available seating in the front. It was a little chilly, but a heat lamp kept us toasty warm. I ordered two glasses of their wonderful white wine, and boyfriend got a martini and a whiskey drink. We had the duck confit for an appetizer. I had sole with veggies and an amazing seafood cream sauce, and boyfriend had the wagyu hanger steak with thin, super hot fries. Everything was prepared perfectly and was delicious.Michael came by to say hi and chat for a moment with us, which he does with all of his guests. He is such a classy, gracious man. He makes you feel like an honored guest in his home. All of the wait staff were wonderful and very friendly. This is why Michael's holds a special place in our hearts and stomachs! We plan to return and book a table soon on their gorgeous back patio. Thanks for accommodating us at the last minute on a Saturday before Super Bowl and during Valentine's Day weekend!

Ambiance on the back patio was transporting. All dishes ordered were delicious; salmon toast with caviar was perfect. Seasoning was subtle, which I love-really let each ingredient stand on its own.
