Fun establishment for a nice dinner.
The viking theme is great and the staff are all very engaged in making it an experience. You start the night with toast of mead and then when the meal is served you choose your "weapon", meaning the knife you will be using to cut your meat with. There are several different knives to choose from which makes it good fun. The food was also very good, I particularly recommend the short rib.

It has displays of Viking knives and helmets and Viking music playing. As an intro the hostess gives you a shot of mead in a horn with a presentation toast to Odin. The food was great as well. The braised beef brisket was tender and delicious. You definitely need to order a side with it though. The radish it comes with is more a topping garnish than a side. We unluckily realized this too late and when we added an order for a side of Brussels sprouts it came out way later once we were don't eating our entrees and the Brussels sprouts were just salted and not cooked with pancetta like described as the side that comes with the chicken dish. The sparkling mead was good but the other semi-sweet one I got that was just in a wine glass was too strong and did not taste great. Definitely splurge on drinking your beer or mead out of the horn. It was the highlight of the experience here.

This was an amazing night out! The food was outstanding in quality and taste. The staff were friendly and attentive and had great explanations regarding the cocktails and the menu. Highly recommend for a delicious night out and I can't wait to get back there.
Be the first to ReplyMy husband LOVED this place and the experience.
The decor, the service, the food... everything was perfect and I can see why this place is so loved. Honestly, a viking themed restaurant could be an absolute flop if executed poorly but Mjolner managed to pull it off superbly. My personal favorite was the servers who were in theme and may have made the experience x10000 times better (forgot his name but he had an awesome voice)! My husband loved drinking beer from a horn. Highly recommend checking this place out!

Coolest place ever! The food was amazing, but the experience was what sold me! Beer in horns, brick walls and tiny rooms/spaces for private eating experiences with an all over Nordic feel. We ate on the lower level. Having not been before (being that I'm from the USA, and this is in Melbourne), the waiter was amazing at explaining menu choices and the unique drink options--of which there are many!! Highly recommended!

My husband and I went here a few weeks ago and the food was absolutely to die for. That day was a cheat say in every sense of the word. I have to be on a low FODMAP diet for medically diagnosed IBS which means pretty much everything on the menu is really not for me.It didn't stop me, by god it did not stop me for even one second. We had the braised marrow with powdered meat (yes, powdered meat, it is amazing and I want my own personal shaker of it) and glazed with a vegemite glaze and we completely destroyed it. It was so, so, so good! For our main we had the 12 hour slow cooked beef rib and it fell away from itself and melted in your mouth. It was like I had died and gone to heaven. For dessert we had the custard tart, because I love me a good custard tart and it did not disappoint!Customer service was on par and the wait staff answered every question we asked with gusto and we couldn't have been happier with the experience. My guts the next day however did not like me one bit.10/10 Would ditch the low FODMAP diet for again.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a fun place to eat at!I loved the beer in the horn.
It was silly that you have to pay extra for the horn-- that should be the only option and price in my opinion but hey, whatever. Lovely ambiance as well
Be the first to ReplyOk so this to me is definitely a 5.
Im not going to bore you with a long review. If you come to this place you sort know what your in for.Service 5 starFood 5 starEntertainment 5 starAtmosphere 5 starPrice 5 starYes the menu is very small. But the meals a very large. When we arrived we didn't know really how it all works. The guy behind the bar was so helpful and made choosing out dinner so much easier.Lastly when they return you how you want your beer make sure you take the horn...

Party like a Viking! I was never much of a fan of Nieuw Amsterdam but had always been keen in visiting Mjolner in Sydney, so I was happy to discover they were opening in Melbourne in that venue. The upstairs dining area is fairly minimalist with a few viking themed murals and a scattering of shields and weapons on the walls. The main room can be quite noisy but there is a side room that is a little quieter, although the blaring hip hop music jarred with the rest of the theme. The downstairs bar is cramped with stools and high tables that are dangerously unstable. There are some private 'rooms' and booths which I think would be the better options down here. One thing I did like about Nieuw Amsterdam - the bar was great. Oh well.Drinks were good - a tasty bloody mary was my favourite. You can get your beer served in a cow horn (yes a real horn) if you so wish. Upon being seated for dinner we were offered a welcoming shot of honey mead (don't clink your glasses) and later were invited to select our own steak knife for our meal. They were all individually crafted and something Crocodile Dundee would have been pleased to own. As expected, food is very meat oriented, and the menu is designed to share. The porchetta (that weeks feature) was delicious, and enough for 4 people (once sides were added). We also tried the bone marrow which was very tasty, but did not take up the option of using the bone as a whisky luge afterwards. Knock yourselves out.The friendly and helpful staff dress as nordic peasants basically (vikings are nordic but not all nords are vikings..or something like that). They even get to add extra bits to their costumes as they please. No horned helmets here though - that's not authentic.Overall a good experience, other than the music. It was my birthday and I got one of the special shot glasses as an unexpected gift. Well played Mjolner, I will be back, maybe after a spot of axe-throwing next time.
