Casual fine dining at its best
Mak is a gem of a casual fine dining spot nestled on the Pest side of the Danube River, just a stone's throw from the iconic Széchenyi Chain Bridge in Budapest. Its interior, with exposed brick walls and high ceilings, strikes a perfect balance between maintaining the building's historic allure and offering a modern, relaxed dining atmosphere. The service was exceptionally friendly and attentive, ensuring a delightful experience. The restaurant serves both sparkling and still filtered water, constantly refilled throughout our meal. As for beverages, I opted for the local wine pairing, while my husband enjoyed a selection of homemade juices and fermented drinks. Both choices were outstanding and reasonably priced. The menu focuses on regional ingredients transformed into dishes that are both flavorful and light. Accommodating my request for a pescatarian option was effortlessly handled. We were impressed by the presentation and the dishes' well-balanced flavors, finding the cuisine to be inventive yet approachable. Our dining experience was further enhanced by a selection of delicious local spirits to round off the meal. We appreciated the restaurant's commitment to showcasing local cuisine and ingredients with a modern flair.
Be the first to ReplyMÁK to table
Last night we had a very special experience at the MÁK restaurant, where we ate the eight-course tasting menu at the chef's table. The dishes feature the delicacies of the Carpathian Basin, but in addition to Hungarian culinary traditions, you can also discover the refined style of Scandinavian cuisine. This is also reflected in the fact that the restaurant uses a lot of fermented ingredients, for example one of my favorites, fermented green strawberries, and these ingredients also dominate in the juice pairing. The latter seemed so exciting that I drank this instead of the usual line of wines, and I was able to taste incredibly unique flavors. It is a little interesting that these drinks were created together with Anja Skrbinek, the fermentation manager of the now 3-star restaurant Hiŝa Franko, who spent a whole week in Budapest with the MÁK team. The chef's table raised the experience to a higher level, it was more than a simple dinner. You can almost feel like an insider while watching Balázs, the chef, as he uses tweezers to create an eye-catching delicacy from the million small ingredients, while he tells me everything about the food, the restaurant, or about fermentation, which I will have to try at home after that. The dishes are fantastic and very inventive, all of them are real flavor bombs, it's hard to single out just one. But what will definitely remain are the smoked beets and the horseradish served alongside, in the form of snow. This is so delicious and has such an exciting texture that I would eat it as ice cream. But I would also like to mention the mangalica stewed for 13 hours with pine needles, the donut filled with duck leg, and the potato dessert, which could even be a side dish. I think this was one of my best dining experiences, so we will definitely be back when the menu changes!

It was one of our best experiences with high cuisine! We will never forget this restaurant! We were very surprised! Also the Hongarian wine was perfect and the team very friendly. We recommend this restaurant to all of you who appreciate quality and love to eat products from the country.
Be the first to ReplyPhenomenal experience, all around
The food was exceptional; every course was truly delicious and memorable. I loved how local and seasonal the ingredients were. Between the concise explanations of the courses, the cool ‘map’ on the wall that pegged to their purveyors, and the extraordinarily knowledgeable and personable sommelier, we felt like we were on our own luxury culinary tour of Hungary. (My favorite little bite of heaven was an oxtail “doughnut” amuse bouche with just a hint of bright plum paste against the sublime meaty, umami flavor esconced in a soft, light dough.) I sense a Michelin star in Mak’s future. Don’t miss out on either the local wine pairing or the fermentation pairing of housemade kombucha, which elevated each course. In short: sublime, and we will definitely be traveling back to Hungary just to eat at Mak.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious degustation menu
We had a wonderful experience at this restaurant. The degustation menu was delicious and paired with local wines which were also excellent. Service was very good and I liked the ambience of the restaurant. I would definitely recommend if you are looking for a more up market dining option.

My wife and I visited MAK which was one of our choices whilst staying in Budapest and what a wonderful experience we had. The restaurant has an 8 course Hungarian tasting menu which you can have paired with either local wines, international wines or their own fermented juices. The whole menu was delicious and the food was cooked perfectly with little twists here and there. The service was warm and welcoming and the whole evening was very pleasant and enjoyable. This restaurant deserves a Michelin star and if you haven’t been one for the list when visiting Budapest.

An amazing experience like no other! A 3 hour 8+ course meal — an artist’s dream! This was a delight of a meal. I truly enjoyed every bite. And the service was superb. Best in Hungary!!

A superb dining experience from start to finish! Staff were welcoming and knowledgeable without being too intrusive, giving excellent wine suggestions throughout the meal and just generally being friendly. The carrot and horseradish dish was one of the best things I've ever tasted! The ambience was also relaxed and we just had a great evening.

Excellent Restaurant with nice variations of the Hungarian cuisine. Taste and quality was outstanding, so that any of the eight courses were nice experience of creative fine dining. Also the challenge that one of us has an allergy was solved in a great way. The risotto with beetroot was very special and a great surprise. The wine pairing with almost only Hungarian wines was a perfect fit. The service was superb and friendly! Thank you again for a wonderful New Year’s Eve! The teamwork from the Mak squad was outstanding!
Be the first to ReplyAn evening we will long remember
A friend recommended Mák. The six of us enjoyed a memorable experience. The autumn eight course dinner with wine pairings was far beyond the ordinary.
Be the first to ReplyNice tasting menu and service
We went for the 3-course tasting menu with my wife. No issue with the reservation even though it was weekend and we could choose our own table. We received a bit more than the 3 courses which was nice, and the wine pairing and presentation matched really well. Friendly staff, polite and quiet atmosphere
Be the first to ReplySophisticated dining in Budapest
We had the 8 course tasting dinner. All carefully prepared and beautifully presented by a young and professional staff. Wine suggestions were excellent.
Be the first to ReplyHungarian tasting menu
This is a tasting menu experience so there is no choice - you can also pay extra for a wine or juice pairing if you wish. We enjoyed the food and the service was excellent. Two of our party didn't want one of the courses - the veal sweetbreads - so they made us an alternative which was a nice touch. This is sophisticated cooking with quality ingredients and beautiful presentation. It is expensive by Budapest standards, but you are paying for the experience

We took the 8 course meal track, with the wine and juice matching tracks ( different drink with almost every dish) and were given some more snacks before the starters. The food was great some Dishes Were better, some less but overall everything was beautifully made while the staff being pleasant and super professional
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding as always
We go to MAK everytime we visit Budapest which is regularly. It actually gets better each time. Very creative offerings and thoughtful and eclectic Hungarian wine pairings. Deserving of a Michelin star. Plan to return in November.

Staff super kind, excellent food. They work with passion, and this is clearly tangible. We literally loved the dessert.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely amazing experience
Myself and my husband had an absolutely amazing experience on Friday 17th June. We had the 12 course tasting menu accompanied by the wine pairing. Each course was described beautifully by very knowledgable staff, and the wine expertly paired, enhancing each course. The flavours were amazing and it was a truly superb dining experience in very relaxed, informal surroundings. We would highly recommend it.
Be the first to ReplyA fantastic Hungarian gourmet experience!
Had a fantastic dinner here, food was outstanding! A fantastic gourmet experience, while remaining unpretentious. The menu felt crafted to the time of year , and showed off Hungarian food fantastically! Alongside this , the wine pairings were excellent. The sommelier was fantastic in explaining and discussing the wines and their origin. It was a fantastic touch that all the wines were Hungarian , providing a interesting journey through the world of Hungarian wine! Overall, we had a fantastic experience, our only wish would have been for the courses to be brought out slower, we felt the early courses were slightly rushed. Other than this , I can’t recommend this restaurant enough!
Be the first to ReplySmall, perfect bites of creative freshness
The concept is simple: combining creativity, sophisticated cooking techniques, and fresh, local ingredients. Pulling this off is much more difficult! Mák does that very well! We did the 12 course menu with wine pairing. Great progression. Each course is dilstilled to its simplicity. No place for mistakes. If you’re here for the experience, it is delivered. We loved all 12. I would change only one maybe. The service is absolutely professional, staff is knowledgeable. Love the creativity that went into each meal. Wine pairing makes it a complete experience. If you like small bites that are memorible vs a large stake or all you can eat type of food, I def recommend Mák!
Be the first to ReplyGood food, but a bit of a disappointment
The food was delicious, but the service was a slight problem, as they didn't come ask if we wanted more to drink, and for the person who had the winemenu, it was quite a question, if they remembered the next glass. The servers were nice and polite though. The bigger problem was, that they didn't have in stock, the items mentioned on the drinksmenu or online. A group of us wanted the juicemenu, but that did not exist and we asked for a Hendricks and tonic as it was on the menu, but they came with a different gin, and didn't have any Hendricks at all. The chairs were very uncomfortable

Wow what a restaurant! Booked online & got several confirmations/reminders prior to visit. Which showed they had my reservation. On a sunny evening we arrived to a warm welcome & was politely shown to our table. Drinks were offered along with the menu & wine list. It is a tasting menu & we opted for the wine pairing. Good choice. Each dish was explained as was the wine accompanying it. My wife has an elegy to celery. After expelling this to the staff at least one dish contained it, but was simply not trouble at all to offer alternatives, rather than miss out. That's service at it's highest. Couldn't fault anything, the food, the wine the service, the staff were very professional without being stuffy (do they do stuffy in Budapest?) aNyway they were fantastic. This is a must if you want modern Hungarian cuisine. Can't recommend it highly enough.

They have a delicious tasting menu, creative presentation of food, relax and calm atmosphere. Very friendly and professional young staff.

It is very difficult to run a Pop-up installation of a restaurant. But if you run it under the same name the expectation is higher than the usual.
I tried Mák Pop-up at Várkert 2X in the past week and I really liked the food. Harcsa Hekk as advertised was very tasty, Lángos is not something you pick up all around Budapest, it is better, the Duck snack was tasty and the Kürtöskalács is a dish you must try.
Unfortunately the Bodag was uneatable. The flat brad was dry, the signature salmon was replaced by pikeperch that was tasteless and the asparagus -already out of the season was over grilled and bitter. HUF 2900 in the bin, by the chef when I brought it back to him... No apologies, no rebate, it is not good... it is your problem attitude. For this price level and from Mák I was expecting something better... Avoid the Bodag.
