Dry Pot
MaLa Project has 3 locations - we went to the one in uptown Manhattan. The most popular dish as well as the dish that the menu funnels you toward choosing is the dry pot, which can be personalized or built to share with the table. You can pick what meats and vegetables you want and it's built custom to you. The dry pot was delicious - thankfully, the uptown Manhattan is less crowded than the other locations and you can walk in without a reservation. Despite this, all diners do have a time limit imposed on them as it is very popular. While our order for two was a bit pricey, it's a popular place for friends hanging out or couples on a date.
Be the first to ReplyTasty food, small portion and WRONG billing
Food is tasty but portions are quite small. An adult may need to order two dishes for a meal. Services are just OK. They use a handheld device with tiny screen for billing. Difficult to properly see the billing details. With the waitress standing next to me watching, I rushed to pay the bill. It turned out that they charged two dishes multiple times. Part of my fault for not checking more carefully but a very disappointed experience.

Sichuan perfection with a twist and a fresh lively nuance tantalizing the taste buds. Flavors to delight with boldness and flair. Make your own bowl and enjoy the taste explosion.

We were the first ones through the door at noon on a Saturday - restaurant filled up quickly after that. We chose a few dishes which were not the "dry pot" style I think the place is known for. All of the flavors were very good. I did not love the non-meat dishes (such as veg dumplings). The scallion pancakes with cabbage and chicken were like wet pancakes with very little topping. It was weird - though flavor was good but big carb bomb. The dan dan noodles were good. All in all the flavors were tasty - I would pick the dry pot next time. Big plus - the service was efficient/super sweet guy who pleasantly delivered everything. Quick service.
Be the first to ReplySichuan Drypot Perfect to the T
Our son is a foodie and when we asked him to take us to a place where my wife, who prefers veggies to meat, his first recommendation was Mala Project. And what an experience. Place is crowded, tables are crammed in but rightly so. More people to experience the gastronomic delights. We had the dumplings and dry pot. The sichuan spices were perfect to the t. Definitely going back there again before we head home.
Be the first to ReplyGood mala place
Mala has been a hit in the last few years, and Mala Project provides the perfect environment to satisfy those curiosity and cravings. Building your own pot is always fun.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious with plenty of vege options
Went there as a family (3 people). Since you make your own dry pot you have plenty of vegetarian options. Also great if you are trying to eat low carb or keto. Many interesting meat choices also. The eggplant appetizer was very unique and delicious.

Went their with friends. Nice service and food. 2 people ordered 8 dishes since we are 2 starving girls. Fish fillet is my favorite and firm tofu is also good

Came across this place by accident and was pleasantly surprised. Nice atmosphere, plenty of guests – often a good sign – and the waiter was really helpful and patient. The dry pot was very good and the Mine-is-better-than-yours noodles were just that. The best any of us have ever tasted. Good stuff.

This restaurant specializes in Szechuan style dry pot. Basically you choose the ingredients( from a menu, not like cafeteria style) from dozens of options like protein, veggies and spice level. Then they cook it and bring it to you. You can order individual size or sharing size. It is called dry pot vs. hot pot with soup. So fresh and delicious. Definitely want to go back.

The food is super exquisite! If there's two of you or more, you can choose your own pot, plus you can choose your spiciness. The interior is cosy and the waitresses cool. And that's all you need to know basically - evenings can get cramped so try making a reservation. Great place to eat Chinese in downtown NY!

The starters of nicely done dan dan mien, roasted garlic eggplant and Mala peanuts piqued our interest and appetite. This was my first try of dry pot; ditto first time eating spam as a Chinese dish ingredient. But it’s supposed to be a communal dish incorporating collective choices of the group. It’s a protein selected by our party besides beef and chicken, accompanied by oyster mushrooms, wood ear fungus, snow peas, bokchoy, taro, pineapple and konjac noodles (bite size buddies). The ingredients were served “chop suey” style as a dish. My friend proclaimed it was an alchemy of flavors. We ordered mild level but there was still a subtle kick of Sichuan peppercorn. I love the texture and hearty looking purple red yeast rice. The restaurant was kind of noisy on the night we visited. It was an unique experience.
