I had only eaten supermarket sushi for the past 8 months and was really wanting some good stuff. I'd also been wanting to try Momotaro. We had no trouble getting a reservation on OpenTable and even had a choice of indoor or outdoor table. Fearing the outdoor tables were next to the El tracks, we chose indoor but, on arrival, noticed guests seated at tables set up along the side street away from the El, so on a pleasant evening, it would have been fine, though noisy when a train rolls by.
Outside the door, a hostess checks you in and takes your temperature. Then you are warned that you must wear your mask whenever a "team member" approaches your table, ushered inside and shown to your table. It's a cavernous space with high ceilings and somewhat dark. Quite attractive though, in a minimalist sort of way. As a party of 2, we got a comfortable banquette against the wall. At only 25% capacity what is probably normally a bustling, loud place was quiet except for the rock music blaring out of the speakers. The menu (smaller than I remember reading online, perhaps) was laminated and there was a card with a QR code to access the extensive list of beverages. No hand sanitizer was provided.
Our server, Rachel, came promptly and took drinks orders which came while we struggled to read the menu in the dim light. Since we were asking her questions about the menu offerings, we had to wait to sip our drinks, since we had our masks on.
For 2 people, we ordered 15 pieces of nigiri sushi, 2 sushi rolls and one hot grilled dish, lamb kushi. I'd have liked a veggie dish but, other than a "salada", whatever that is, I didn't see any, not even a seaweed salad. However, in the dim light I may have just overlooked it.
Everything we ordered was delicious, from the cocktail to the final, hot dish. It all came promptly in several courses and service was smooth. The standout dishes were: the Momotaro oyster which came in a huge oyster shell containing 2 oysters, 1/2 teaspoonful of black caviar, and sauce, nestled atop a large mound of shaved ice in a bowl, quite a spectacular presentation, and the lamb kushi. This was 2 grilled lamb rib chops brushed with soy and intriguingly spiced, served medium rare. We did not want dessert, so did not even take a look at the dessert menu they offered to bring us.
Dinner for 2, after tax and the 3% "benefits surcharge" was $180, before tip. If we'd had a bottle of wine or ordered a bigger quantity of food, it could easily have been far more. But I thought, considering the quality of the food, the price was not outlandish. We left satisfied and glad to have finally tried Momotaro.
