Excellent
Excellent food in a modern and chic ambiance. Our server made the experience especially smooth by thoroughly explaining each section of the menu and how much to order for our group. Reasonably priced for a restaurant of this caliber. Truly a must-try Japanese restaurant in Chicago.
Be the first to ReplyGreat meal at the izikaya downstairs
Dined with a friend at the izikaya, on the lower level of the restaurant. Cool atmosphere—low ceilings, moody lighting, a few tables surrounding a larger bar. Quite different (and much smaller) menu than the restaurant upstairs, with a few more ‘street food’-like options. Everything we ordered was tasty. A salmon hand roll was really fresh. Gyoza were delightful, with great texture on the outside and a flavorful filling. The chicken wings were yummy—sticky, a little spicy. The only thing we didn’t love (even though it was still okay) was a rice bowl. Delicious cocktails that were quite innovative. Very friendly service—server had a great attitude, knew the menu well, paced things perfectly, and recommended the right amount of food for two people. Would very happily return!
Be the first to ReplyA Great Night of Japanese Food
If you like Japanese food, this is a great place to go in Chicago. The wait staff helped us pick our dishes because, aside from sushi and sashimi, we didn't know a lot about Japanese food. The atmosphere is very lively -- the restaurant was completely full when we were there. It was a great evening.
Be the first to ReplyNothing special
Nothing special food seasoned poorly.. drinks watery and way over iced. No beer wine menu just Off brands for the most part at Napa best pricing. Service slow and nothing special.. The staff work to be posh and trendy but coke off flat and trying to hard. Sushi nothing that you are going to say wow about. Other food fine but nothing special if the food delivered the price would be a value but I have been to many places that I enjoyed the food much more but lacked the trendy feel. The investment is always best spend in food not decor.. I will not be back
Be the first to ReplyGood but overrated
I really wanted to go there for a long time, especially being local to Chicago and enjoying Japanese cuisine throughout the USA and the world. Unfortunately, we were slightly disappointed. Atmosphere is pretty nice, but nothing like "wow, amazing". The service was professional, but not too attentive or friendly. The wait was too long, the prices too high, the portions too small. The food, including sushi/sashimi combos, and appetizers, were quite good, but not amazing. I expected more, hence it is 3.5 out of 5, not quite 4. As a side note, after dropping $200 for 2 with minimal alcohol, we were hungry enough to share pizza with our friends over drinks. That tells you the story...)))
Be the first to ReplyOur One Disappointment
We couldn’t leave Chicago without going to a Japanese restaurant. Unfortunately, all the ones in our list were closed on a Monday, our last night. Except Momotaro. Highly-rated so we thought it would be alright. Wrong. It was our most expensive meal and our worst. We took the server’s recommendations: maguro (bland), salmon avocado roll (avocado mousse overpowered the salmon), momomaki (too much rice & indecipherable tuna), shitake robatayaki (burnt) and chahan (beef fried rice that took forever to come). The only thing good were the lamb chops but were too miniscule that we ordered it twice so we don’t leave hungry. The place was well furnished but too noisy with loud irritating music (and I love music). Unforgettable night for the wrong reasons.
Be the first to ReplyLovely staff, great food
We didnt have a reservation but were very keen to eat there. We asked them to accommodate us if possible and that we would be happy to do drinks nearby if possible. We went back an hour later even though they were totally sold out made it happen. Though it was close to the kitchen shutting never felt that they rushed us. Food was excellent. The only issue was that our rice didn't show up almost an hour into the meal when we were finishing up. We asked them to cancel it because we were tired of waiting. The lovely waitress brought the manager who promptly came over, apologized and then 5 min later delivered the most divine rice bowl. Am glad we didn't end up canceling it as it was truly one of the best rice dishes I have eaten. He came by and said he had taken it off the bill which was very sweet as we certainly didn't expect it. Overall with the combination of exceptional food and staff that goes beyond the call of duty to accommodate us on a busy day to the niceness of the manager - this place will definitely be a repeat for us many times over.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious and safe gluten-free options!
The service was fantastic and food was delicious. One of the first questions they asked us is if we had any allergies. I very much appreciate this since i am celiac. They had a separate gluten free menu which made choosing safe options easy. Our server was so friendly and knowledgeable. We sat at the sushi bar and the chef and sous chef were incredible. A must-do if you enjoy sushi and are in Chicago!
Be the first to Replyoutstanding sushi and special dishes
We had a couple hot apps (octopus and shiitake mushrooms) that were very good, then a variety of sushi, including some of their signature dishes, which were all excellent (Momotaro sushi is worth the name!) Friendly knowledgeable service, nice decor, a great artisanal beer (Kagua rouge) all made a great experience. One obvious potential downside-it's expensive.
Be the first to ReplyElevated and inspired dining experience
My husband and I love the Japanese small plate experience and Momotaro did not disappoint. Upon touring Chicago from out of town, we explored the city’s food scene and Momotaro was our favorite restaurant visit. With its energetic and contemporary atmosphere and creative menu, Momotaro provides an elevated and inspired dining experience. Each dish we ordered was fun to enjoy, and the knowledgeable, friendly staff provided great service throughout the evening. For anyone looking to keep their night going afterward, the restaurant is within walking distance of lively bars and dessert spots, making this a wonderful date night or friend gathering destination.
Be the first to ReplyHow to have a Great Experience at Momotaro
Great restaurant experience. Here’s how to do it…
Skip the drinks and order the hot apps especially the Tako Su (we re-ordered) and Mapo Tofu. Order the beef rice dish which is hearty and filling then add several sushi rolls especially the Momomaki, shiitake, and Hamachi. Few restaurants have rolls like these where the seafood flavors dominate instead of sauces, etc. If you have room the blood orange dessert was a clear favorite.
Incredible food and atmosphere
The food was incredible!! We had the edamame, shiitake mushrooms, Shishido peppers, the spaghetti, the wagu beef buns, a specialty role, and sushi nigiri. We will be back!!

My wife and I went for a special dinner here and loved every bite! While it's a bit expensive, the freshness and flavor are worth it, and we would be back . I highly recommend the "beef chahan" which is a great value and generous in portion size at $22. It's a slice of thin beef with a raw egg that is then mixed in a HOT stone bowl with a bunch of brown rice, that gets crispy and all cooked together--hard to describe, but order it! We found the Hamachi to be a better value than the sushi, and it was delicious. The rolls were also awesome, with the yellowtail being our favorite. Service was excellent--very personable and professional, and they work as a team. room is beautiful with music not too loud. We also appreciated the manager doing a check in, and he was very sincere.

My wife and I are writing this review as we are seated at Momotaro. The restaurant decor is very upscale. However they seem to have the same darkness problem that other trendy restaurants are doing lately. When you need to use your cell phone to read a menú, something is wrong. The wait staff is not attentive at all. I thought with a Michilen rating that we couldn’t go wrong but that was incorrect. The cuisine is excellent but atmosphere and service is a c-
Be the first to ReplyExcellent sushi and more
I had only eaten supermarket sushi for the past 8 months and was really wanting some good stuff. I'd also been wanting to try Momotaro. We had no trouble getting a reservation on OpenTable and even had a choice of indoor or outdoor table. Fearing the outdoor tables were next to the El tracks, we chose indoor but, on arrival, noticed guests seated at tables set up along the side street away from the El, so on a pleasant evening, it would have been fine, though noisy when a train rolls by.
Outside the door, a hostess checks you in and takes your temperature. Then you are warned that you must wear your mask whenever a "team member" approaches your table, ushered inside and shown to your table. It's a cavernous space with high ceilings and somewhat dark. Quite attractive though, in a minimalist sort of way. As a party of 2, we got a comfortable banquette against the wall. At only 25% capacity what is probably normally a bustling, loud place was quiet except for the rock music blaring out of the speakers. The menu (smaller than I remember reading online, perhaps) was laminated and there was a card with a QR code to access the extensive list of beverages. No hand sanitizer was provided.
Our server, Rachel, came promptly and took drinks orders which came while we struggled to read the menu in the dim light. Since we were asking her questions about the menu offerings, we had to wait to sip our drinks, since we had our masks on.
For 2 people, we ordered 15 pieces of nigiri sushi, 2 sushi rolls and one hot grilled dish, lamb kushi. I'd have liked a veggie dish but, other than a "salada", whatever that is, I didn't see any, not even a seaweed salad. However, in the dim light I may have just overlooked it.
Everything we ordered was delicious, from the cocktail to the final, hot dish. It all came promptly in several courses and service was smooth. The standout dishes were: the Momotaro oyster which came in a huge oyster shell containing 2 oysters, 1/2 teaspoonful of black caviar, and sauce, nestled atop a large mound of shaved ice in a bowl, quite a spectacular presentation, and the lamb kushi. This was 2 grilled lamb rib chops brushed with soy and intriguingly spiced, served medium rare. We did not want dessert, so did not even take a look at the dessert menu they offered to bring us.
Dinner for 2, after tax and the 3% "benefits surcharge" was $180, before tip. If we'd had a bottle of wine or ordered a bigger quantity of food, it could easily have been far more. But I thought, considering the quality of the food, the price was not outlandish. We left satisfied and glad to have finally tried Momotaro.
Our Favorite
Momotaro is splendid. Chef Kato has done a spectacular job elevating the experience over the last year. It has been a delight experiencing dining there getting better and better. The staff are all a delight - friendly, knowledgeable about what they are serving and showing a passion for making Momotaro great.

A terrific selection of sushi choices. The flavors were fantastic and everything was incredibly fresh. Wonderful service on a busy Thursday night. Nice selection of wines, but pricey.
Be the first to ReplyGood vibe and food in this Asian inspired eatery
Stopped by for a late meal and drinks in their subterranean bar/restaurant which seemed to attempt a speakeasy/underground vibe. The staff are attentive, welcoming and accommodating. We tried a flight of sake which which was a cool treat as you typically have to commit to just one brand/flavor in other restaurants. Went in to order additional cocktails which were all unique attempts. The one roll we had was a tuna chili and it didn’t disappoint. The pricing for one round of drinks, one roll and one sake flight came to $85. Being from CA, I’m used to really superb sushi and this location was able to hold its own.
Be the first to ReplyHighly recommended & a definite splurge
I took my husband here for his birthday and I'm glad I made the choice to go here. We love sushi and we love to try sushi everywhere we go. You cannot go wrong with anything you pick on this menu. I'm very glad that we had a waiter who recommended us drinks and sushi dishes because the menu can get very overwhelming to look at it with the Japanese names. But it gives great description and just enough choices to make. I will say the menu is pricey and you can easily spend over a bill for dinner so be prepared to shell out some cash for this place. But it's very well worth it to go and the experience is unforgettable. Highly recommended for anyone who loves sushi and Asian foods. It won't disappoint.
