My husband, daughter and I had just one night in New York and decided to try to find some of the best old school Italian we could last Monday the 27th . I spent a very long time on the internet trying to find something perfect and purposely avoided Little Italy because of its reputation as a tourist trap. This place seemed to hit all the marks: it’s been around forever (over 100 years), owners are there, has amazing reviews, has only 4? bad reviews, is reasonable enough for a nice meal, reviews talk about how friendly the staff is…literally seems perfect. Well, I have to say, I do not understand this place at all and haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since we had the meal. It bugs me that much. First off, ambiance is nothing special, could be much more charming, there was a faint sour small when approaching the table, their prices on their website are way out of date and are at least $3-$5 more per item in person: I mean our Caesar was $3 more ($12) and our main dishes were, at least, $5 more per item, at least. Bread was fine, just drizzled lightly with olive oil so nothing special, olive oil seemed good, not rancid, but there wasn’t much on it so it was basically a plate of 4 slices of white bread. No balsamic or anything else other than salt and pepper on the unattractive white paper covered tables. (I’m not a fan of white table cloths covered with paper: either do paper or tablecloths, you can’t have both worlds.). Old Fashioned drink was fine and strong, nothing special like people say. Caesar was fine and enhanced by the large amount of capers: lots of white parts of romaine, not my fav but I’m used to it in my restaurant caesars. Then our main dishes came. First impressions, cook, didn’t look like the chef everyone talks about, brought out our food, not the older waiter we had, all our food was shifted on the plate as in off to side and not put in the middle of the plate and the portions were small. We all started eating, we were, after all, still excited for our food at this point. We all fell silent and then the “hmmm”s started from around the table. We all started cocking our heads, looking at each other, taking our bites, trying to analyze exactly what we we were eating because it was becoming increasingly obvious it was Not good Italian nor was it even good food. So then we just spent the rest of the time comparing each others food, analyzing just how bad it was. It really brought us together. I had the Linguine alle vongole with white sauce which was what our waiter recommended over the red. It was beyond salty and gritty (obviously not rinsed). I just asked for more bread so I could mellow out the salt. My husband got the Spaghetti con Polpette. Meatballs were good but red sauce was the worst: tasted like just straight puréed tomatoes straight from the can. There was literally no other flavor: no pepper, garlic, herbs, maybe a little salt, nothing else. My daughter got the Penne Primavera . We don’t even know what was going on with that: without any spices and just a bunch of vegetables coated in the terrible red sauce on spaghetti, it just tasted weird. And did I mention there wasn’t a spread of Parmesan anywhere?! I don’t know if there wasn’t supposed to be or if there was. Our waiter never came by while we were eating so we couldn’t share any of our thoughts at the moment. In fact, he hadn’t been to our table since he brought the salad, I think he brought the salad. The cook brought out our main meals. When the waiter did finally come by it was just to collect our plates and he didn’t ask us anything so we didn’t say anything. I feel like they are a bunch of guys that have all been there forever and they are now just scamming and milking it: I felt bad and couldn’t not tip or say anything at the time because I literally couldn’t help thinking about them having to wait tables at their age. When we got away, though, I couldn’t help thinking they know exactly what they are doing, praying on tourists who think they are coming for old classic Italian, using old school charm but panning off bottom of the barrel food with zero effort at top prices. I want my night back, I really want to have gone somewhere else, and this really makes me distrust trip advisor. I live in Oklahoma and we have a way better Italian restaurant here at Victoria’s than this place. I’m also not Italian but we all know it’s not hard to do good italian, it is hard, however, to do very good to great italian. This place with all its charm, not really, unfortunately, doesn’t even do good italian or good food. Will someone please explain this place to me, and give me my one night in Ny back, too, if you can:)
