Our first visit and it certainly won't be our last. The place was busy and everyone seemed to be enjoying their food. We had a Dosa and Gobi Manchurian as starters (note to self the Dosa is quite the largest I have seen and maybe too big as a starter!), very nice indeed and the dip (samber I think) that came with the dosa was a revelation. As mains we had the kadai (similar to a karahi in other sub continent areas) - we had a chicken and lamb kadai. Excellent as was the pillau rice, and the chapatti was superb, thicker than normal and with a hint of filo pastry about it. With Kingfisher on tap it was a memorable meal.

Great place to eat! Food delicious Service excellent Prices reasonable Can’t fault it. Hopefully they’ll either takeover the shop next door or move, so they don’t have to turn guests away. It’s always busy.

We were taken here by friends who had been before, you may drive past because it’s tucked away in a corner. Once inside the staff are very friendly ,service is quick , the food is very fresh and full of flavour . The food is southern Indian so a lot of vegetables ,but I have to say I really didn’t miss not having any meat . Can not recommend this place enough. Thank you for your service 🇬🇧
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding South Indian eatery
Bright, cheerful eatery with outstanding South Indian food - do try the tea-tray sized masala dosas with mouth tingling chutneys. If you think UK curry-house fare can be a bit samey, Nalaas will be a revelation. We went early and just walked in but by 1pm it was getting pretty full. Service was fast and friendly and prices extremely reasonable. Only thing to watch out for is that it is cash only, although a short walk to a nearby cashpoint solved that problem. Highly recommended.

We love curry but get a bit sick of the tasteless curries usually on offer at the local takeaway. We heard about naalas and have been wanting to go for a long time. Wow we weren't disappointed. Stunning flavoursome food with layers of flavours. Highly recommend. We had the chilli and coriander dossa prawn garlic curry and the thali. Blown away. We will be returning.

Amazing food and great service (attentive and helpful but never overbearing). The Thali was great across the board and every other dish our party ordered was so tasty (big shout out to the Idli Vada). Definitely high on the list of Derby restaurants that serve good food at good prices. Will definitely come back.

Absolutely brilliant, authentic Indian cuisine. One of the best curries out I have had in a long time. Although this place is unassuming from the outside, in a quite rough area of Derby, you have to try the food produced in these kitchens - it is absolutely delicious. The inside could do with re-decorating (especially the loos) but it is comfortable and clean.

No, it's not in a salubrious location; no, it's not pretty on the outside; but wow is the food great. Nalaas serves some of the most authentic tasting southern Indian food that you'll find in this country served promptly by friendly ladies running front of house. Inside is clean and comfortable but it really is all about the food. The toilets need investment, but other than that 10/10.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous food and lovely staff
It has been a while since we last visited Nalaas but the food here last week was absolutely fantastic. Staff are lovely and helpful and every single dish is cooked with such care and attention, even the pilau rice is "special". The food here is different from every other run of the mill curry house. Dosas and vada to start are fabulous with all the homemade chutneys. 10/10 recomend!
Be the first to ReplyJust superb!
An absolute gem! The dosas are exceptional, the puris beatifully puffed etc. It's more cafe atmosphere than restaurant but that in no way detracts from the joy of eating here. If only it wasn't 150 miles from my home I'd eat here most weeks.

Absolutely delicious South Indian food. Paper roast, paneer, nala dosas are all incredible. We also had idli. Highly recommend the thali option. Such beautifully cooked curries. Lamb biryani and chilli chicken were amazing. Finished off with masala tea and gulab jamun. Our second visit to Nalaas. Team at Nalaas are very friendly, welcoming, and they have cooked the best South Indian food eaten out of India.

Be the first to ReplyBest Indian in Derby - Dosa to die for !
The only problem with Nalaas is that there are so many amazing starters that we couldn’t eat all our Curry when it arrived but not a problem as we were given a take away carton and had it for lunch the next day ! Highlights are pretty much everything but you must try the Masala or Cheese Dosa and the Poori Masala ! The Paneer 65 and Gobi 65 are just delicious ! You get the impression that everything is delicately prepared but there are big flavours here ! We had the Kadai Paneer which was hot, rich and lovely with fluffy boiled rice and the softest, lightest chapathi ever ! Some of the best Indian food we have eaten and I’ve eaten a lot ! No it’s not posh like Anoki but the service is lovely and the food is incredible ! Do yourself a favour and try it !
Be the first to ReplySimply the BEST Indian food in Derby
Best Indian food in Derby. Simple. Go there and do your tastebuds a favour. The menu is good I always have a Thali. This is different, it doesn’t do the same food as you see in 100% of all the other Indian restaurants. It is simply amazing Indian food, authentic and is hands down the best Indian restaurant in Derby. Don’t worry about what it looks like from outside, go in, take a risk and order something you’ve never had before. It’ll blow your socks off.

OK: the food is asolutely amazing. So tasty, so deep in flavour, so authentic. Really good quality and I have had a few curries in my time! This is a little gem of a place and we will definitely return. Don't be out off by the location nor the outside appearance. So, why not five stars? Well, the service was, how shall I say...relaxed! What I mean is: we waited ages for our drinks; our plates were not cleared and we got up to pay because nobody came to our table after we had finished eating. Inexplicably, the three waitresses were often standing doing nothing; not the end of the world, and totally forgivable because of the food and how smiley and super friendly they were.

Find it hard to understand why this restaurant is ranked in the 60s on this site. Yes the location is not great but the service, quality of food, service and atmosphere is all first class - not hard to see how it won a national award. Tried the chaaf today along with dosas and a palak paneer. A total joy - never had better.

Absolutely amazing food, so many flavours in one dish, like nothing I’ve ever tasted before. A friend from work took me here on a business trip suggesting to try some authentic Indian food, and I couldn’t be more impressed! Great restaurant as well with very friendly staff.

Get to this restaurant as soon as possible to enjoy its brilliance. This restaurant is incredible. We went for Sunday lunch, it was busy with no other caucasian guests. This is always a good sign. We both thought that the experience was like going for Indian food for the first time.
Our highlights were the crisp lite onion pakora, chicken not korma, dosha served with unusual dips. Our waitress was so helpful. Taramind rice....
Avoid the coffee.
Best Indian around!
Been here for a sit down meal and takeaway. This place gets busy so best to book and remember cash only. Very unassuming place and very much reminds me of traditional eateries in Asia. Very family friendly and full of people enjoying traditional south Indian food. Dosas are amazing and wonderful to see the faces of the little children and adults faces light up when the dosas are brought out, each one seemingly bigger than the last . All food is fresh, ready and on the spicy side. All reasonably priced and very good portion size, takeaway has a 10% discount. Dishes tried included all prawn and seafood dishes, lamb Rogan Josh, dosas and parata, all delicious.

This non-assuming, hidden gem is a delightful find. Whilst there is nothing too impressive looking at this restaurant from outside, it is the fabulously, tantalising impact to your tastebuds that truly counts.
This is a cosy little restaurant, quite simple in its look, yet the food is far from being plain or simple.
We ordered
1. Masala Dosa (a huge, light, pancake type wrap filled with a spicy potato filling) accompanied by chutney and samber
2. Chilli Prawn - OMG!!! sooooo tasty
3. Chilli Chicken - the guys loved this so much
4. Chilli chips - really tasty, but don’t expect these to be dry and crispy
5. Butter Chicken - the guys loved this dish
6. 1 roti, 1 paratha - yummy
7. Mango lassi - very thick and very tasty
8. Kulfi - so delicious
9. Rava kasari (semolina dessert) - didn’t like this!
The staff are delightful, very polite and happy to make recommendations to your palate. We were promptly seated (we did book ahead. and glad we did as if is a very small restaurant and very popular). The food arrived freshly made, piping hot. The restaurant has a bar stocking wine, beers and spirits.
We’ll definitely be visiting again as there are many other dishes we want to try .
The food was very tasty and flavourful.
i would’ve preferred my dosa being served on a plate or metal talli (tray) and not a plastic tray! albeit, all was clean and well maintained
A little treat
Found this after reading its great reviews, and what breath of fresh air this charming little place is when set alongside the garish and ludicrously expensive 'big name' restaurants that people wrongly rate as quality Derby eateries.
I visited alone for an unplanned lunch. Although they had 20 covers taken, I was accommodated and catered for beautifully. Opting for a chili fish starter, that proved to be a tilapia, I followed with a Masala Dosa. The fish was served in a richly spiced sauce while the Dosa came with an array of accompanying sauces and vegetable curry. Steering clear of booze post New Year, the bill came to 12.40. Lovely food and great value. I unhesitatingly recommend and promise I will return to sample more.
This place is a Gem.....
We'd read that the restaurant had won a national award - so we were keen to try it out. As it was new years day we were unsure whether it was opened so sent a text via Messenger. They replied promptly that it was indeed open from 12 noon until 9pm. We wanted a take away and ordered the Chefs Special Chicken Chettinad with Coconut Rice and plain Parotta bread. A good choice with the order taken by a nice, friendly professional lady. The wait was about 15 minutes. The place was reasonably busy (3pm) and we noted there was seating for around 30 people and the Restaurant decor and furnishings were good and in a modern style. The meal was fantastic and well priced with generous portions. Well done Nalaas a fantastic addition to Derby Indian Restaurants.

I haven't been here for a while. So when my family said we’re going to ‘Nalaas’ I was a bit sceptical to say the least. However, when I walked in, Wow! Just WOW! Incredible transformation.
The service, the etiquette, the environment and the FOOOD, especially the food was just incredible.
Thank you so much for the experience.
We will definitely be returning soon.
An amazing discovery!
Don't be put off by the exterior appearance - this is a fantastic place to eat. Lovely food at a great price, a really nice restaurant, and fantastic service. Very much worth discovering.
