Great service, fantastic food!
Fantastic brunch - the haddock bubble and squeak was amazing! Lovely cup of coffee, great service and nice decor. Will be back to try the dinner menu as it looks delicious!
Be the first to ReplyGreat seafood lunch
We were visiting Cambeltown in early February and went to No42 for a late lunch. The restaurant was quiet with 2 other covers.at the same time. We had a lovely round table on the upper tier with a booth window seat. The menu was written on blackboards and we had starters, mains and desserts. We found the quality of the food exceptional and worth the money, having visited a Michelin recommended restaurant the next day we felt No42 was so much better.
Be the first to ReplyA superb birthday lunch
We've been meaning to visit Number Forty Two for a while, but finally made it last weekend for my husband's birthday. We were not disappointed as the food was superb. For starters we had the seared scallops and the haggis spring roll, both of which were beautifully presented with appropriate sauces and garnishes. For mains, I had the venison and my husband the feather blade of beef special, both accompanied by green vegetables, perfectly smooth horseradish mash (which was not too strongly flavored) and some really nice sticky red cabbage. We don't usually bother much with desserts but were intrigued by "When life gives you lemons..." which turned out to be a wonderful selection of lemon treats e.g. some sorbet, tart, drizzle cake, panna cotta and frozen limoncello. The affogato was also excellent - though I didn't do it full justice as I prefer to enjoy the components separately rather than pour the coffee over the ice cream. It was relatively expensive i.e. closer to typical Glasgow city centre prices than the norm for Campbeltown, but we thought it was well worth it for a special meal out, given the very high quality. We will be back, and look forward to trying some of the seafood on our next visit.

Are you all daft? If you think this is fine dining. Think again. What we have here is a โCaptive Audienceโ Overpriced and underachiever.
Be the first to ReplyMy birthday present to me
I was speaking to my son and he asked what was I doing for my birthday? I replied I don't know. He said what about going to the pub for a pint. I decided to drive to Campbeltown (120 round trip). I found Number Forty-two. A big fish restaurant. I had Cullen Skink, which I have heard of. However, I have never tried. I was not disappointed it was excellent ( I will always remember my first was here). Followed by fish and chips, which sounds quite ordinary, but it was something else. The food was excellent, plus service to match. I will definitely come back to try more amazing fish of the menu. Thanks for making my day special Dickie ๐
Be the first to ReplyWorth the trip to Campbeltown
Called in for lunch and was blown away by the quality of food and service. Set menus is great value for money or treat yourself to one of the specials. The fish curry is amazing. Well worth the trip to Campbletown for this restaurant alone.
Be the first to ReplyLunch at 42
Fine dining without the price tag. A short notice lunch out to a special restaurant. We enjoyed a two course meal today, where both of us chose the venison pot roast as the main, and followed it up with sticky toffee pudding. Tell me anywhere one can enjoy a properly prepared meal with such attention to detail and taste at ยฃ18.00 per head as this, and I will visit ! The service wasnโt bad either, so well done Number 42, you never disappoint.
Be the first to ReplyNumber 42 turned hubbys frown upside down ..
Hubby was fed up so decided to go for lunch to Number 42 ..well glad we did ..2 courses with glass of wine included each under ยฃ40...starter of cauliflower veloute with warm crusty bread was welcome on a cold day ..followedby delish fish chips crispy batter sn home made chips fr me and hubby had chicken on brioche bun with chips ..both meals excellent ..only fault was our eyes bigger than our bellies and we were so full ..staff friendly but not.intrusive atmosphere warm and welcoming ...
Be the first to ReplyGood food and nice restaraurnt if you donโt mind slow!
Popped in during a tour of kintyre. Came recommended. Good food and nice restaurant but staff run off their feet and super slow. Scallop starter great followed by a heavenly curry. Sadly ordered the bill rather than desert as just left waiting. Even then had to walk to the bar to pay. A shame as could have been great but service really disappointing!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent service and food
Great staff and food at a sensible price, 3 of us went and enjoyed the starters and mains, the mussels were disappointing, mainly due to being served in a deep bowl that was too small for them, best Affogata we have had anywhere, we are going back again before we leave and have asked the restaurant to keep oysters for us
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Seafood Restaurant
This restaurant was recommended to us when enjoying a golfing trip to Machrihanish. It was well worth the visit. The seafood was fresh and perfectly cooked. The staff were friendly and efficient. It is an excellent addition to Campbeltown

Thought I'd try their Sunday lunch and settled on two courses being the roast beef to be followed by Jam Rolly Polly (sic). This restaurant has a very pleasing ambience and the front of house team were both friendly and attentive. Sadly, this is where most of the positives stop. Once seated, some warm, crusty bread was served with a knob of very strange butter dusted with spice I couldn't identify. Bread good, butter not. The roast beef looked good, and it was a generous portion. However, the roast potatoes weren't at all crisp, the beef was cut way too thick and was unacceptably chewy, and the Yorkshire pudding was a somewhat flaccid affair. The accompanying green veg was perfect, and the small ox tail stuffing bonbon was a delight. I would have much preferred a smaller portion executed to perfection. The pudding was awful. A nasty flavourless and chewy pastry roll that was not only overly sweet but also covered in cocoa. The only saving grace was the small pool of cold custard in which this abomination sat. Would I return? Nope. I figure that if a kitchen can't serve a crisp roast spud or a very basic pudding, they're not deserving a second chance. Shame really as it's a delightful interior.

We had a meal here last night and it was absolutely amazing! We will definitely be back! Food was perfect, lovely atmosphere, great staff around fantastic experience!
Be the first to ReplyFantastic!
Visited with my wife. I'm always apprehensive visiting restaurants as I have a milk allergy, and generally end up with a very limited menu. Chef came out to see what I fancied to eat and said that he could modify pretty much the whole menu. Considering I normally end up with a couple of choices that is amazing. Not only that, I had a choice of puddings as well. That has happened about 3 times in the last 20 years! Difficult choice on the menu, with lots of fish and a delicious sounding Highland beef steak as well. There was also a duck breast which sounded fantastic. The menu clearly changes regularly with 8 starters and 8 mains all on boards on the wall. Probably about 8 desserts as well, again on a specials type board We had the fish and chips, extremely fresh flakey fish, crispy batter, mushy peas and delicious home made coleslaw and a tartare sauce. For pudding I had deconstructed Eton mess, and my wife had the chocolate brownie. Again absolutely stunning and we could fault nothing. Portion size is good, I couldn't finish my pudding, despite not having had breakfast. I believe there is also a brunch menu during the week. The prices were very reasonable for the quality of the food. I can't fault any element, quite frankly I'm surprised they weren't busier, even on a wet Saturday lunch in South Argyll! Will definitely visit again.

Chef Gordon provided us with amazing canopy food for my partners birthday at home, short notice which wasnโt a problem for him, canopyโs where stunning, been to Number 42 on numerous occasions every time it passed expectations, service is great and food is stunning, canโt wait to go back

Amazing seafood and probably the best panna cotta Iโve ever had. Quite a few reviews mentioning that it is more expensive, but to be honest, ยฃ36 for two top-notch courses is very fair value Iโd say.

We had lunch here today and wow it was fabulous we thoroughly enjoyed the crab risotto and delicious pannacota and crรจme brรปlรฉe for dessert. Fast efficient service. Highly recommended. Thank you.

Had not booked but was accommodated and welcomed on a Friday evening. The range of food was great and the value was, too. Really tasty and decent portions. My wife had crab claws as a starter - lots of them, and large with flavour. Great!
Be the first to ReplyStill the Best
Last year we visited No.42 and said it was the Best Seafood Ever. We dined again at No.42 when we returned to Campbeltown this year. The Mussels, Scallops and Halibut were to die for. Service was friendly and attentive - we will be back.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic find
Noticed this place online before our visit so decided to give it a try . We had several starters rather than a main as they appealed to us more, we also had a nice NZ Sauvignon. Overall very tasty ( the bread with truffle infused butter was yummy. I havenโt been in Campbeltown for a good few years so it was great to see a quality restaurant show casing local produce/ seafood. The staff were lovely too. Definitely recommend you visit for lunch or dinner.
