Highly recommend the gomtang for a cold day.
Their thin sliced pork with a bit of their gochuji chili paste is the perfect bite. For one person, gomtang and four hefty pieces of kimchi mandu is very filling, but so good! The kimchi stuffing is honestly something I wish I could eat over and over again. If only I lived in New York!

3.5/5 While choosing between a variety of unique appetizers and tasty entrees is fun, it can be a bit of a paradox of choice. Sometimes it's nice to have no choice but a warm hearth soup and some plump juice dumplings. Okdongsik is perfect if you're in that mood. It serves up a simple Gomtang, topped with pork and scallions. It's not too oily and overall perfect for the cold NY winter (summer soup is different). Make sure to also get the dumplings, they were the highlight dish for me. You'll get 4 plump mandoos filled with delicious kimchi, tofu, and pork! Overall, great service and atmosphere. Come with a friend, get a soup each, and share an order of mandoo! Oh and if you want to continue your night, my favorite speakeasy in the city is accessible without leaving the restaurant. I'll leave you to figure out where!

I had seen this place on instagram before and was interested, thinking "if a place has very few things on their menu, the things there must be pretty good", and I wasn't wrong. We had a reservation but still had to wait for ~15 minutes. The restaurant is 2 parts, the front eating area with bar only seating and a drinking bar near the back. After we ate, we tried to go to the back and see what the bar was like but there was a line so we left. We were sat near the window, but with our backs to the window and facing the middle area where the chefs were. We both got the same thing, the Dweji Gomtang. The bowl had a couple large slices of pork on top of rice in a light and flavorful broth. The kimchi was very good, sweeter than other kimchi that I've had before. Overall, a great meal for a cold day.

I'd been wanting to check out Okdongsik for a while and was surprised at how easy it was to find available reservations. I snagged a resy for 2 a couple days ahead; there were actually multiple time slots available for the day I was looking at. The restaurant was a lot smaller than I expected. Think cute, cozy light wooden interior and there was only bar seating. There were only maybe ~12 seats all surrounding the bar and I don't think the restaurant's capable of seating large groups. They seemed to prioritize getting food out (and people out) as fast as possible. The menu only had 2 food items: the gomtang and the kimchi mando, which made things really easy. We each ordered a gomtang and were surprised when it arrived literally a minute after...I guess that's not too shocking given that everything was already ready behind the bar. I'm typically pretty good with blander flavors, but the gomtang was honestly a bit too bland for my taste. There wasn't too much flavor in either the soup or the pork, and the pork itself was not tender at all. It definitely could have used more salt/heartiness in the soup. I ate my kimchi with the soup and it was a little bit better but definitely not world shattering. Relatively inexpensive in terms of getting a meal in NYC: the soup itself was $18. But if you really consider that all you're really getting is soup and pork it starts looking a little pricey. We also felt really rushed. My friend and I were chatting before touching the food, and the server came us to tell us to start eating. Before we had finished the soup, they also asked us if we were ready for the check. There's a lot of pressure since they stack reservations within ~30/40mins on top of each other, and as we were leaving, we could see people filing in to immediately take our space.

I was excited to see an opening for a weekday 1:30 pm lunch to finally get to try this place. Dewji Gomtang - broth was light and came out hot. The kimchi added some nice flavor. The pork was tender and went well with the gochuji. Kimchi mandu - the highlight! The mandu was soft and the kimchi, tofu, and pork combination worked well in texture and flavor. Overall, the food was good but I felt like the service could've been better. I felt like they were rushing us out. We were still eating when they gave us the check and there were only two other pairs in the restaurant with no other parties coming in. They also did not refill our barley tea when it was empty.

Came here on a weekday with a reservation and tried their kimchi dumplings and gomtang (the only 2 food items). Both were excellent. I liked how the dumplings had a mild kick but the spice was not overwhelming. The gomtang had a generous portion of meat, and the broth was super flavorful. They serve a comforting barley tea instead of water. I found the service was warm and attentive. Ambiance is sleek and clean.

So I heard a lot about this place and was hoping to try it for a while. I walked in during a weekday at around 7pm and was able to snag a spot just for myself. The seating is just bar seating, maybe seating around 15? There are hooks behind you for your coat and bags that you might have. Intimate small space, and mostly individual / pairs of people dining together. The food menu is simple, and only has two things: GOMTANG Essentially, a bowl of tasty broth with rice inside, and slices of pork with a side of spicy paste for you to dip/add on separately (outside of the bowl). It was light, soul-warming, a little savory/salty, and tasted very clean. It won't make you feel heavy after. The kimchi on the side was quite delicious and had a nice, fresh crunch. I will say that I'm not super experienced with Gomtang, and so I can't really evaluate how great it is in reference to other gomtang, but I will say this is a nice place to solo dine if you're looking for a simple, but a little elevated, healthy, soulwarming meal. While I was expecting more in terms of savoriness/saltiness/boldness of broth just by appearance, it was more clean, simple, soothing. MANDOO I enjoyed the mandoo, they were plump, freshly steamed, nice chew to the skin and had finely chopped ingredients inside that burst a bit with flavor. Really nice, and a great addition of heartiness to an otherwise light meal.

It's good basic food, but not extremely spectacular. The pork had that gamey smell, and so the soup did as well. That took away from the flavor of the soup.

finally had the chance to try okdongsik on one of the coldest nights this winter season! we each got our own bowl of dweji gomtang ($18) and shared an order of kimchi mandoo ($12). my expectations might have been a bit too high, but the gomtang was a bit plain and lacking (my friend and i both felt that it needed a tiny bit more salt). the kimchi mandoo and kimchi, however, were very flavorful. service was fine but they never came around to refill our tea or kimchi. glad to have checked this place off my list.

Coming from a Korean household, I feel like I've never eaten a Korean traditional soup that I was satisfied with ever since we moved to the States. So when I heard about Okdongsik back last November, I was very intrigued. I heard the pop-up location would close on April 2 (congratulation on the permanent opening!), so my friend and I went in as a walk-in. We were kindly told that the wait would be around 30 minutes, but it was definitely shorter than that. We ordered Dweji Gomtangs with extra pork, Kimchi Mandoo, and Maesil Ade. 1. Dweji Gomtangs: The broth and the pork were amazing. Usually, when I eat gomtang, I would have to add more salt because it's bland but this was perfectly seasoned and very clean. We were initially hesitant about paying an additional $8 for the extra pork, but it was definitely worth it for the taste and the quantity (make sure to eat the pork with the house special spicy fermented pepper sauce). 2. Kimchi Mandoo: These dumplings were unexpectedly tasty. Maybe because I didn't have many other kimchi dumplings besides the frozen pack ones, but these were packed with flavors. 3. Maesil (Korean Green Plum) Ade: It was good, but not necessary. I was honestly too busy eating the food that I completely forgot about the drink until I finished them all - which was a nice sweet end to the perfect meal. I'm very excited for this place to open its permanent location and would definitely come back. The price can get a little hefty if you get the extra pork, kimchi mandoo, and maesil ade but I say it's worth the try on your first visit.

The dumplings were my favorite part and were some of the best I've had - just really expensive. The 2 dishes after tax and tip were about $39 so definitely expensive and I did not leave full. I wouldn't come rushing to try it out but glad I checked it out. Wouldn't come again. Only waited for like 15-20 mins on a Tues at 5:15pm

I think they call that Viagra in medical circles, but Okdongsik sounds more fitting for food, no? It even has "dong" in it. HeheheheAnyway, all 3 items here are the best of their kind. The kimchi is perfection. The mandoo--usually pretty hit or miss with me--were so good, I saw Buddha by the final bite. And that Dweji Gomtang. Perfectly seasoned, hot as balls (see what I did there?) and everything you want in your mouth on a cold winter's day.

Good Korean food should make you sweat, cry and snot after eating, this restaurant does none of that. Rather, it celebrates mediocrity prioritizing aesthetics over flavor. My husband walked in and waited at the restaurant 10 minutes before they opened up and were able to get seats within 20 minutes of opening. We ordered two of the gomtang soups, kimchi mandoo and tangerine ade.1. Gomtang- this was suppose to be the highlight of the restaurant yet all it did was taste of unsalted flavorless boiled pork broth, dry meat and crumbly rice. You need to add the gochuji to attempt to save this. At $18/bowl I expected a lot more. 2. Kimchi mandoo- these were some of the best kimchi mandoo I've had, delicate skin, plump and juicy filling. This was the saving grace of this restaurant, but at $12/4 pieces with the wait you're better of just visiting one of the many other Korean shops in the area.3. Tangerine-ade, $8, this was ok we didn't really taste the tangerine in it, pretty disappointing since the ice in the drink took up 75% of the cup. Quite expensive for something non-alcoholic.Lunch came out to about $70 for everything which in my opinion isn't worth it. Service was quite lackluster and pretentious, when the server noticed me putting the gochuji into the soup halfway through he told me to stop, and that I was "ruining" the flavor of the soup. Our waters weren't refilled and paying took about 10 minutes to check out, which is surprising for a 12 seater restaurant. Additionally, when asked where to procure some of the plate ware of the store, the server told me I wouldn't qualify to buy the products from Korea. How asinine.Save your time, energy and money and eat at one of the many other wonderful Korean places in the area. +0 Vibe+0 Taste+1 Presentation+0 Service+0 Value

I had no luck getting a reservation for this place! If you also aren't having luck, make sure to show up right before opening because they have 4-5 spots available for walk in. Okdongsik is the perfect place to go on a cold day. The service was fast, and the food is so fresh. They only have 2 food items on the menu so I definitely recommend getting both. The kimchi dumplings had an excellent flavor, and a nice spice. It was a great compliment to the broth. The pork was soft, and not heavy. The rice wasn't soggy, it was still nice and solid. The soup itself was so clean, and so refreshing. I would highly recommend putting some time aside and giving this place a try. I'd definitely come back.

I don't make a reservation before and luckily only wait for 10mins on a weekday lunch. And it deserves!It is a specialized place for serving a bowl of hot soup with pork and cooked rice in it and homemade kimchi mandu.Everything in the bowl is well balanced. The soup is so good and I can drink all.I think it also serves the best kimchi mandu in nyc and I love the complimentary kimchi, neither so spicy nor salty.

They only serve 2 things - pork gomtang + pork/tofu dumplings and a few selection of drinks. The soup was good but not mind blowing. It's a hard pill to swallow to know that the soup is $18 tbh. I wanted to try it before the popup leaves on April 2. I shall try it in Korea and see the true taste (and price) difference. Worth trying! Definitely share the dumplings or order a set for yourself.

Okdongsik only had two things on their menu for food - Dweji Gomtang and Kimchi Mandoo ($12). While the menu is limited and they don't have as many side dishes as other Korean restaurants, the food came really quickly and everything was delicious. I was initially worried that I'd still be a bit hungry after, but I felt decently full even though I split the mandoo with my friend. I also tried their Tangerine Ade ($8) and liked how it was sweet, but not overly sweet. I'd love to come back but getting reservations for this place isn't the easiest thing, so we'll see what happens!

You're here to try the kimchi mandoo and dweji gomtang. Both are solid and are perfect for a chilly day. The kimchi mandoo has a very thin skin and the filling itself is on the softer end. The gomtang is on the lighter side, with rice sitting in a bone broth and slices of pork on top. I'm glad I had the chance to try it. Overall, it's a quick meal, where you know exactly what you're ordering and you're likely in and out within 30 minutes.

Gomtang is fine but not packed with flavor so don't go in thinking it's something crazy (more nostalgic) for people eating this growing up. Kimchi mandoo was very good. If I were to go back, I would get maybe one soup to share and two orders of dumplings.

I went here on a Saturday around 12PM for my birthday lunch without a reservation. The counter is small (seats maybe 10 people at a time). When I got there, I was informed it would be about a 45 minute wait which was fine because they took down my number and I could go wait somewhere else, but the wait time got extended an additional 15 mins after I left. Be warned, they only give you a 10 minute grace period when they text you that your spot is ready, so make sure you don't venture out too far. When we sat down at the bar, they already had some kimchi and a some of their special sauce at the place setting. The kimchi itself was absolutely phenomenal. Their menu only consisted of two food options and two drink options, but everything was so delicious. Both drink options were light and refreshing. The kimchi mandoo were my favorite, and we actually ended up getting two orders of that because we liked them so much. For the dwaeji-gomtang, if you've never had it before, I would say, don't come into this expecting a super rich and salty broth, because it is not that. The dwaeji-gomtang is a delicious pork bone broth with rice and delicate slices of pork on top. It's a very simple, light, and refreshing soup that is perfect for detoxing on a lazy Saturday. I wish this place was around for longer as I'd love to come back, but I'm very glad I got to try it at least once.

There's a lot of hype around Okdongsik, so much so I haven't had a chance to successfully make a reservation on Resy for the over 3 months since they are consistently booked solid. And trust me I have tried! I follow their IG page and wait for when they drop weekly booking windows. Yea, it's a whole process. I was elated when I managed to finally snag two seats on Resy! Finally!!Just a little background - I love Korean gukbap. The best one I've had was in Busan, South Korea. There are also really great ones you can find in NY like in Flushing, Queens and Fort Lee, NJ. As you can imagine, I had really high expectations before coming which could have been a detriment. The soup was a Pork Gomtang and it was OK. It was quite tasteless for broth to be honest. It's consommรฉ style, a light clean and clear broth. The slices of pork were tender but also bland. The red sauce with the pork was great but I found that adding kimchi to the slice of pork added a nice crunch and mouthfeel. Would I go back to have it again? No. I know, gomtang and gukbap are very different, maybe I'm just not a gomtang fan but perhaps you are?Now, the kimchi dumpling and the kimchi were very good. A+! I would order those dumplings to go if possible. The tangerine and sweet plum ades were enjoyable too. I felt transported to Jeju while sipping on the tangerine adeThey've definitely nailed the exclusivity down, but not worth the hype.
