I knew I wanted to surprise my husband with omakase for his birthday, so I spent a while reading the reviews of a couple different places in the city. I'm really glad I picked Omakase Takeya! It was our first time trying something like this.It was fun to be led to the basement for the experience; we felt like we were part of a secret club. It was a very intimate experience and all six guests kept their voices low so the atmosphere was perfect. My husband said he felt like he was in church (in a good way.) The omakase took about 45-50 minutes and every piece was delicious. Go in expecting it to be that length, as I believe the last 25 minutes in the 75 minute reservation are optional if you would like to order more pieces. We debated a bit about our favorites, but I think I'm going to say my favorite was the king salmon with pickled garlic, followed by the fatty tuna. I've had some sushi with flavors that I have never experienced before. It was so cool to watch a master sushi chef at work! Our server was very attentive and detailed all of the sushi we were trying. From beginning to end, it was a perfect experience and something we'll remember for a long time.

There's been a few omakase in Chicago that I've been wanting to try and this was the first on my list. Check-in is at the front of the ramen shop and the host will tell you so sit by the back to wait for another hostess. Out hostess greeted us and told us head down stairs to be seated. The omakase part of the restaurant is small and I believe there are only 6 seats. This omakase is definitely on the cheaper side at $99 per person for 15 course chef's omakase. The sushi itself was really good and I ordered an additional otoro nigiri. However, like the other comments, the omakase experience ended pretty quickly because the chef served the sushi pieces really fast. This is not the place for you if you want to dine and chat for 1.5 + hours.

One of the most disorganized restaurants I've ever experienced. A total trash experience. If your life depended on it I would still take my chances and eat somewhere else.

Only complaint was the sushi was rushed to be served and what was advertised as a 90 min experience only took us 45 mins! Other than that, it was a cozy and intimate experience since the sushi bar only sits 6 people in front of the chef. Delicious pieces--my favorites included the scallop, shrimp with truffle, fatty tuna, and salmon!
Be the first to ReplyThe pieces are delicious, there's no doubt about that.
However, it's treated like lightning round omakase with rapid fire delivery of the pieces so the reservation can be completed and staff can move on to the next. The first piece was served before I even took my coat off and certainly before I could look at the drink menu and order something. There was quite literally no time to converse with anyone else when the pieces were being served so quickly and any conversation halted so the server can provide descriptions of the pieces. And then being shuffled out when the menu was completed. My husband and I have had many omakase experiences in Chicago as well as around the world including in Japan and Singapore and we have never felt so rushed. At best this is an omakase to be experienced solo and in a time crunch.
Be the first to ReplyThe worst experience you can imagine.
I am a foodie that values good food, good service, and good ambiance, and am willing to pay for it. If you value these things, please save your money, taste buds, and time by NOT going here. From the time you walk in the door the atmosphere is unimpressive, the staff upstairs are rude, and far from welcoming. The restaurant smelled like mildew mop water, not the smell you you want when eating sushi.....down in the basement where the Omakase takes place, absolutely abysmal. I lived in Tokyo for 2 years and this set up was far from the amazing experience I had down in the Juban. On top of the horrific setting the chef was equally as abysmal. He truly looked as if he was being forced to serve guest. No smile, no conversation, no energy, nothing. This is not the experience or service you would expect if you paid $50 for a meal, but even worse when you are paying $300 for the meal. Last but not least, there is nothing worse than sushi that is NOT fresh!!! There were at least 2 pieces that we had to spit out! Again, please do yourself a favor and bypass this place, your tastebuds, eyes, and wallet will thank you.
Be the first to ReplyHad a reservation at 6:15pm but messed up the timing.
When I realized and called at 6:50pm, was not allowed to come in even though I still had 40 minutes left in my reservation. No rescheduling, no standby waiting, no future credits at all. $200 just disappeared for nothing. Was told "this is standard policy it is your fault that you missed it"Not saying being late was not my fault. They just enforced their policy and did nothing wrong. It's just the altitude I got from the phone was so disturbing. So transactional and no empathy at all when I was upset. Can't believe they offer zero help. All I can say is never miss the grace period if you book here.

He's never experienced an omakase before, I have twice. This was by far the best experience! Each piece was delicious, and put together with care. I loved that the space was intimate with 6 seats, quiet and peaceful. I particularly liked that it was tucked away below the Japanese restaurant above so it felt like a Speakeasy in its mystery.I would highly recommend this restaurant for a special occasion!

Small but busy ramen shop upstairs, an intimate omakase sushi downstairs. Only a seating of about 6 guests, 1 waitress, and a sushi chef. It truly is an experience. The preparation for the nigiri, temperature of the rice, and occasional dab of wasabi under the fish are different from the typical orders at a restaurant. The waitress explains each course so you can completely appreciate the meal. Also if by chance you are still hungry after the meal you're welcome to order more a la carte. I was content with the amount so I didn't see the need to order more as to over stuff myself.

Before I begin, I must say that the service, chef, food, and environment are all incredible. Best quality sushi I've had in Chicago and the intimate, authentic Japanese setting were true highlights. I loved the experience of this secret underground room where all the magic was happening - kind of like a sushi speakeasy. The reason for the three stars is that the entire meal felt so RUSHED. As with the rest of these reviews I've seen, they really crank out 15 courses non-stop and it feels quite forced, which does not grant for a very relaxing dining experience. The time from the first course to the last course was legitimately 30 minutes, which really is much too fast for a true Omakase experience. I would expect at least twice that amount of time for 15 courses. You were not given any time to stop and enjoy the sushi between courses. I do not fault the waitstaff at all - it seems that the real issue is with the management and how many sessions they try to fit into a night. My boyfriend and I were the last in the room with about 20 minutes left in the reservation and already the staff were clearing plates and prepping for the next reservation which made us feel rushed, uncomfortable and unwelcome. The setting is small, only 6 total people seated the night we went, so I can understand the need to cycle more people through but this was at the expense of the entire experience. Again, I will say that the sushi was delicious and the staff did the best they could with the time they were given - Emily our waitress was fantastic at making sure we had what we needed and explaining all the dishes as they were served. I just would hope that the management recognizes the need for the reservation periods to be longer, to better space out the courses, and to allow more buffer time between the reservations.
