Osakana East Village New York Reviews from The Last Year
Such a cute little fish market to get some quality cuts!
Such a cute little fish market to get some quality cuts! I absolutely love going out for sushi, but I also love having it at home (I had a salmon sashimi birthday cake once) - I'm so glad I stumbled across this spot in New York. This is going to be my go-to for getting fresh, delicious fish to eat at home. The chirashi bowls also looked great, so I'd love to try those for a picnic somewhere once the weather gets warmer. The shop itself is very small, basically just a shelf of some products and the register, so just note you may have to wait outdoors. A lot of people also pre-ordered for pickup, which I'll likely do next time I come back as well. A huge yes to this place! Will definitely be returning next time I get a hankering for some good fish.
Been dying to try this small fish market in East Village.
They have a variety of fish and options of sashimi, sushi, rice boxes. It's all take out but definitely can walk to the nearby park to have a small picnic since the weather in NYC is getting warmer! - Sushi Deluxe ($32): The pieces of fish were so generous and I loved the salmon & scallop! The price is around $4 a sushi but the sizes of them are HUGE. 5/5 - Hokkaido Bento Deluxe ($35): The ikura was a bit fishy imo and I wish there were a little more uni. The bowl itself was good but I think the sushi deluxe was more worth it for the price! 4/5 Overall this place is great to go to for a quick sushi fixe and wants good quality sushi! The outside is also super cute! The place is small so make sure to order in advance!
I took a sushi making class and was super underwhelmed.
They admitted they sold out of most of their fish, so our class didn't have much to work with. We got lean tuna, salmon, and mackerel (the cheapest fish). She felt bad so she offered some older Uni, but it's was rancid and she kinda agreed. Definitely not worth the money for old fish and a lame lesson.
Ordered omakase take out and I was so disappointed.
I really wanted to like this place because it delivered to my area and I don't like picking up omakase and taking it home. The fish tasted old, chewy, and dry. The rice tasted really chewy and old. I usually save the best for last and the uni piece in my order tasted like the bottom of the ocean and rancid. I also ordered 1/4th a lb of ikura and it was overly salted. I seriously wish it was better because I wanted to order here regularly but definitely not worth the money I've spent and I could have picked up something better. I found a bone in one of my sushi pieces and I spat it out. The other pieces were so sinewy I spat them out as well it really ruined my meal.
While I entered Osakana with high expectations, my visit
While I entered Osakana with high expectations, my visit left me disappointed. Despite its reputation as both a fish market and sushi spot, the quality of the fish, especially in my chirashi bowl, didn't justify the price point. I encountered a few chewy bits of fish, which was disappointing. It seems the social media hype didn't quite align with the actual experience. The bowls are beautiful though!
My experience at this sushi spot left me feeling
My experience at this sushi spot left me feeling disappointed. Despite the hype I'd seen on social media, I found the sushi to be just okay. The overall taste didn't quite meet my expectations, and nothing stood out as particularly great. One issue I encountered was the excessive amount of rice accompanying each nigiri. While the fish pieces were of decent quality, many had a chewiness that didn't quite appeal to me. I understand that it's to-go sushi, so my expectations weren't incredibly high, but I've had better experiences elsewhere. Overall, while the sushi was passable, it didn't leave a lasting impression, and I likely won't be returning.

Was craving sashimi of just a ton of salmon and some yellowtail. This salmon!!! Was!! So!! Fatty!! Loved the generous portions of yellowtail as well. Not shown is some mackerel which I preferred over the yellowtail actually. Such great quality and great value :)

The presentation of the bento boxes is beautiful but the sushi is terrible and very chewy. Too bad, really wanted to like this place. Will definitely not come back.
Some of the best fish I've had in New York.
It's expensive but worth for a bougie to-go lunch!
My favourite new sushi spot if I want that bento box that
My favourite new sushi spot if I want that bento box that brings me back to Japan. The sushi here is extremely fresh, and their homemade soysauce is one of the best I have had state side. The prices are also reasonable too for the amount you get in all the bento boxes. Just reminder to order from them in advance because they are a tiny place and it normally takes them about 20 minutes to make a walk in order. Heavily recommend to everyone!

Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
