I've been here more than a few times now.
Make sure to park at one of the public parking lots, there's one on Raymond (the same street Osawa is on) that's part of the Marriott, first 2 hours are $1 per hour. That's a deal in LA.Some classic dishes that are always a must have/order here: the chicken karaage, uni pasta (it's usually a special), fresh/raw oysters, aburi toro salmon nigiri that's my absolute favorite. Other nigiri that's always good to pick also is the scallop or tuna roll or Wagyu. Black sesame panna cotta is pretty much as must from here too.But you really can't go wrong with any of the sushi here. They have a lunch special too with chef's pick of the sushi. What makes this place a bit special and worth repeat visits is they do always check if anyone has any allergies or foods they won't eat (this is very different from Japan btw, where dishes won't typically be altered for allergies for example). Also they always have new seasonal dishes so it's always worth coming through to try new dishes and ingredients. My most recent visit me and my sister shared the duck breast with yuzu kosho which was fire. The renkon (lotus root) shrimp tempura isn't nearly as good as the shiitake shrimp tempura I've usually had here only for the sole reason the lotus root was really crunchy or slightly undercooked in my opinion. If it was meant to be enjoyed that way then it wasn't to my taste unfortunately. Everything else was good and the desserts were tasty and never too sweet. The yuzu jelly has a bright and refreshing tartness to it.Other visits here I've had beef tongue, Shabu Shabu, beef tartare, salmon skin salad, beef udon, whole fish dishes, lychee crème brûlée, matcha soufflé, sweet potato desserts, Hokkaido milk and strawberry pudding and hojicha chocolate panna cotta... there is always something new and exciting to have here.Anyways, other than one hiccup of a dish which I admit may not have been to my preference, I've enjoyed everything I've had here. I really recommend coming here and seeing for yourself some good Japanese food. And more often than not I always order a few of the jellies and panna cottas to enjoy at home later. Service is always great here also and very attentive. And the location is nice in Old Town Pasadena to take a walk or do some shopping after your meal. Lots of coffee and dessert places nearby also. It's a fairly small restaurant so I recommend reservations or lining up when dinner service is about to start! Happy eating!
Be the first to ReplyOne of my favorite sushi restaurants for sure.
Oshawa provides consistently great service, a thoughtful menu, high-quality dishes, and an excellent ambience for any occasion. Give their daily specials a try and don't forget to drop by during lunch hours for their special lunch deals. Will be back soon!

Be the first to ReplyWe came here on a work night without reservation.
We just cannot have Shabu d/t no reservation. We ordered bunch of dishes and I love them! Delicate, well prepared and presented and tasty! Service is nice. Love the decoration in this restaurant!

One of the best Japanese restaurants in the area and dare I say all of LA? They have something for everyone, whether you're looking for fresh sushi, comforting udon, shabu shabu, or a little bit of everything with their beautiful bentos. Don't skip on their daily specials either; it's always something unique and delicious! I come here almost every week because of how fresh the food is and the consistent quality. I'd give them 10 stars if I could! The only con is that it's a tiny restaurant so be prepared to wait if you don't have a reservation.

My husband and I have been coming to Osawa primarily for Shabu Shabu since 2017. I love their selection and quality of sushi too, but to this day, their Shabu Shabu ranks as our second favorite. (The top being the original one in DTLA Little Tokyo, of course.) I love not just the service, but more so the warmth and genuine friendliness of the servers at the Shabu Shabu/sushi bar. In regards to the meat, if you love beef and are eating with someone, I suggest one get angus ribeye and the other wagyu; split it and you get the best of both worlds - or at least a really great balance!

It's the best Japanese restaurant in the greater Los Angeles area. No hyperbole. I've been to dozens, and this is the one that most reminds me of dining in Japan, both in terms of the food and the atmosphere. Incredibly friendly staff. Great for a special night or just one of your regular sushi cravings.

..Ok but not amazing They have a lot of place for improvement.Service was not as attentive as I would have liked.
Be the first to ReplyFood was great, overall a great experience.
Lots of options with meat, and the self serve buffet with the vegetables and some precooked foods also had lots of options. They were short staffed when we arrived, so there was some wait probably more than usual due to that, but overall very good, and we will go again!

Was a great place to meet up with family on a cold rainy day. The ingredients were fresh and delicious. Kids enjoyed the shabu shabu experience.

After seeing all the great reviews, I was so sad the sushi deluxe wasn't that good. Majority of the fish were very thick and hard to chew. I didn't finish the dish because I almost felt sick. Maybe I went on a bad day? I did like the pickled side and dessert. Our waiter was super nice and presented the dessert menu to us in detail. Reservations are made over the phone. Was able to book a Friday dinner reservation one week before. Parked at the nearby Marriot structure and it was $3 for around 2.5 hours.

Came here for Shabu but it's not offered outdoors so did their other food instead. Everything was so incredibly delicious and authentic but with a delightful touch of flare. The staff was incredibly kind and it seems like it's a family owned business. One of my favorite meals in a while, one of the rare japanese restaurants I really want to bring my (picky) japanese mama to.
Be the first to ReplyLove this spot in Pasadena.
Service is great and food is delicious. Tried the uni pasta for the first time and the creamy texture was perfect. The tools were deliciously well made with the right textures and flavors. This meal really hit the spot. Tip: street parking is free after 8. They also have some reasonably priced lots that aren't too far off a walk.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and service.
Heads up the flavors are more tamed and the ingredients are super fresh.

I am Japanese and find this place to be authentic and among my top three favorite Japanese restaurants. There is usually a wait and the seating is crowded. But it's worth it.
Be the first to ReplyOsawa, Osawa, Osawa - our relationship started five years
Osawa, Osawa, Osawa - our relationship started five years ago and still continues strong today. I've always enjoyed coming for lunch or dinner, as long as a reservation is in place. The waits can get rather long otherwise. The lunch bento box is worth the price of coming to Osawa alone. I've yet to try their shabu shabu offerings, but look forward to that this coming winter.
Be the first to ReplyThis place was OK.
The prices are a bit on the higher end in my opinion for the amount of food you get. I think it is meant to be a "high end sushi bar" but honestly, it's just overpriced sushi. For ex, the sea urchin/uni is $17! That's insane. I go to a place in Little Tokyo (DTLA) that has AMAZING uni for $8. When it comes to sushi, it really depends on the place. Nonetheless, I was optimistic. I ordered the sushi bento box and it was good. I wish it at least came with rice but the miso soup was delicious. The sushi is pre-selected by the chef so make sure you're ok with the selection before ordering. The quality of the fish was alright. One funny thing that happened was, I ordered a beer and my dad order an iced tea. When the server brought our drinks, he automatically and without even asking or confirming, gave the beer to my dad and handed me the iced tea. I tried joking with him saying "how dare you assume" but he blamed his coworkers for rushing him instead which I found distasteful. No biggie though. Just a little side of sexism to go along with my sushi.
Be the first to ReplyThis place is incredible.
Tonight I took myself out to a "self care" solo dinner. The hostess was so kind and conscious of my solo experience. After I was seated, she checked in, made some awesome recommendations, and took real pride in her work. So refreshing! I had the albacore, yellow, salmon and black cod sushi. Plus, blue crab cut roll. I will absolutely be back. 10/10. A give that hostess a raise!!

Can't believe I worked across the street from this gem and it took me years before trying them. Tiny spot with the most amazing sushi. Incredibly fresh and delicious along with friendly service. They offer Japanese tapas such as the tempura shiitake mushrooms stuffed with shrimp, crispy on the outside sweet and silky on the inside. The salmon avocado hand-roll was well served and the salmon was butter. They also offer shabu shabu if you're not in the mood for sushi but still want authentic Japanese food. Excited to visit again and try the omakase sushi.
Be the first to ReplyI stopped in for a quick lunch.
I decided to get the omakase sushi as I wasn't sure what to get with so many items that looked great on the menu. The omakase offered an interesting and delicious variety of fish including at least several types of fish that I've never had before. Service was excellent especially in light of how busy the restaurant was at lunch. I will definitely be back next time I'm in Pasadena!
Be the first to ReplyFirst time being here.
The server was one of the best servers I have ever seen. She was super kind to explain what I don't understand about the menu. In terms of the food, it was delicious. I ordered the black cod bento, and I loved it. Definitely returning for a second time.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible service and flavorful sushi.
