Went to Pata Cafe for lunch in Elmhurst, Queens, NY.
Looking for authentic Thai? You'll find dishes here that are hard to find in the . NY Times and Michelin recommended for casual authentic Thai fare. Had Thai Lychee tea and Yum Woon Sen. Sweet and complex flavor for the tea. Spicy, tangy, earthy and herby flavors for the dish. Too full for dessert! Wife had the beef soup. Only seats 12 people max. Cash or Venmo only. Lots of free street parking on a Saturday. Can't wait to go back!

Elmhurst is Teeming with Affordable Michelin Spots! Foodie alert - within the neighborhood of Elmhurst is the highest concentration of current and past Michelin Bib and Michelin Star (Zabb Elee, formerly) in NYC. And here's another one, Pata Cafe. Located deep in the residential area in Elmhurst, this eatery is authentic Thai in its food, decor and ambience like I'm back in Chiang Mai once again. It's a mother and daughter duo business, where mom is from the northern Issan region and daughter grew up in Bangkok, resulting in dishes that are middle of the road delicious that's neither cloyingly sweet (typical Bangkok fare) nor overly spicy (typical Issan fare). It's been reviewed by New York Times @ligayamishan and awarded the Michelin Bib. Kop khun ka, Pata Cafe! #curious_eater #michelinbibgourmand #michelinguide #michelinnewyork #newyorktimesfood

This cafe is located at the end of a residential block, and I could never think it's a restaurant there. This place looks like a convenience store with rustic art installation. In fact, they do sell lottery tickets here!! The store has a mosaic wall of scrap wood, an array of objects like you find in a museum that includes buckets, silverware, books, statues of the Buddhas, and some plants. The food doesn't look like it includes a ton of ingredients but is packed with a punch of flavor. We asked for spicy and we didreceived it, one person at the table wasn't able to handle it, and that one person wasn't me. This michelin guide restaurant was run by an older lady by herself. We tried 2 entrees, 2 appetizers, and a cold coffee, all of which were amazing. If you are in Queens and want to get some great Thai food in a NYC residential neighborhood, look no further. It's much easier to find street parking here!
Be the first to ReplyI may have to come back and try other dishes.
The chicken with my rice tasted old. The grill chicken was really good. Service very good. Like I said, I have try other dish and give a better feel. Price for the food seem high. Cheers!
Be the first to ReplyI live in the area so I've been here so many times.
The quality and taste is very consistent. Authentic thai food, affordable price and very friendly staff. I always get the Thai tea. Pata Cafe always delivers, never disappoints! I uploaded their most updated menu as of August 2023

Be the first to ReplyA cozy little Thai cafe with friendly service.
A great place to catch up with a friend for a quiet conversation. The menu is small but everything we've tried has been tasty and reasonably priced. If you're a fan of Queens' multicultural vibe, you'll enjoy hanging out here.

This restaurant is just a 1-minute walk away from where I used to live, and I have been a frequent visitor over the years. Pata is a homey establishment with a delightful tropical treehouse atmosphere. The space is quite limited with 3 tables that would sit a total of 8-10 people. It is a family owned restaurant with a mother and daughter duo running the show. Service is friendly and efficient when it comes to making your order. The pad se-ew (4.5/5) was absolutely fantastic. It had a perfect balance of savory flavors and a delightful hint of smoky wok hei aroma. The ga prao kai dow (5/5) was a simple yet incredibly flavorful dish, bursting with umami richness and spiciness. The menu here features home cooked style dishes that are simple and straightforward. The restaurant is conveniently located just a few blocks away from a school, which means it can get quite crowded with kids when they finish school in the afternoon . Therefore, I recommend visiting during noon time or in the evening to avoid the rush. This place will always be an option when I'm in the area.
Be the first to ReplyWhy Pata Cafe doesn't get more shine is beyond me.
As a fun women-owned business in the heart of Little Thailand (#1), they have morphed from a drinks only cafe to a full fledged casual eatery focusing on simple Thai comfort food dishes. Born from the success of Pata Paplean (#2), they've made a real impact in the local area and make me wish I had a neighborhood gem like this in my own backyard. Big groups will struggle here as the place is small and limited seating. The layout of the place is cramped like any NYC spot, so folks will just have to make the best of it. The vibe is casual as it is homey, it feels like the perfect place to grab a drink and a little grub in good company. Speaking of grub, their options here are vast. From flavor packed curries to tasty noodle dishes, there is very little that doesn't merit a thumbs up. Their pad woon sen and pad see yu are lovely, as is the classic basil pork with egg over rice. Their fried chicken wings are also a hit with folks and their pata grilled chicken is outstanding. Finish it off with a Thai iced tea / iced coffee as a nice way to complete the meal. Prices are what one should expect in the area and the selection has only gotten better over time. I hope this family run biz continues to thrive and they'll continue to get my business whenever I'm in the area. ___________ (#1) A chunk of two of my favorite neighborhoods: Woodside and Elmhurst. Excellent food and great service! The Ka Prao Kai Dow, ground beef over rice is soooo good. It is spicy but she adjust spice to your liking. I also love the Thai ice tea and the mango sticky rice...delicious .
Be the first to ReplyThe store is alittle hidden but it's a pretty nice find.
There is usually only one lady running the kitchen, so make sure to order ahead of time. Their slush is very good.
Be the first to ReplyIve been to Thailand MANY times to lose count.
...and this place makes me feel like im visiting an old Aunty. When the cook is the little older lady the food is WONDERFUL! (the young girls are Ok....but nowhere near the skill of the Aunty/Granny ) Naturally she needs a break but wait until she is back or the day she is there....She is fast, friendly, and a Top Chef. The other girls that help out are sweet and make good suggestions if you cant decide. They also have a few things that no one in NYC cooks. After eating Thai food since 1993 these folks are the closest thing to buying a plane ticket to BKK.
Be the first to ReplyTheir ground beef over rice (spicy) is SO GOOD.
Not a big fan of basil so i always asked for no basil and extra spicy. Me and my husband loved it so much!! Oh and the pad thai is also good. The old lady is so nice everytime i come she always greeted me with a smile

When you are craving for some down home Thai cooking in a friendly neighborhood setting, check this place out!The seating is limited, but gives you the warm and fuzzies. Surprisingly varied selection of drinks, mains and starters, they even offer bubble tea. We ordered shrimp rolls, tom yum soup, green papaya salad, pad kee mao shrimp, grilled pork and green curry chicken. Satisfying portions, more than the average. Dee-licious.There's no other way to describe the satisfaction other than to come back and get some more!!

OH. MY. GOD. YOU GUYS. This place is the best Thai restraunt I've been in my life. (I've been to many Thai restaurants in the past). We were getting on our way out of the city and the traffic to I-495 was impossible. So we just pulled over and found the closest restraunt. We ended up stumbling on this tiny restraunt down the street. There's plenty of free street parking and it's pretty quiet around here. We walked in and it seemed like a cute, humble little place. There were 2 tables inside that sit 4 people each. There was one lady behind the counter. This lady did everything, she ran the whole place all by herself! She mentioned that her daughter helps out, but she wasn't working at the moment. She was so kind and it felt like home. We ordered the Tum Poo Plara, I ordered it cause I normally love papaya salad, and this seemed like a more elevated version than the usual. We also got the Basil Fried Rice, Kua Gai, lychee Thai ice tea, and coffee with cream and sugar. There's 1 small bathroom inside should you need to use one. It's pretty clean, but small. Despite the whole restaurant being run by 1 lady while fulfilling take out orders at the same time, it took her about 10 mins to prepare everything. It was pretty impressive. But our party of 3 were also the only ones in the whole restaurant. We also went later on in the day around 2pm. Everything smelled amazing and the noodles and rice were steamy hot! The lychee Thai ice tea was refreshing and very sweet and tasty. The Tum Poo Plara was very very flavorful, spicy with the perfect mix of umami from the fermented crab, sweetness from the tomatoes and the sauce, and sour from the lime and fish sauce. It was amazing. The Basil Fried Rice was pretty good too. It was delicious and not super oily or salty. But the star of the table was the Kua Gai. I've never heard of it before or tried it. There were these thick broad rice noodles stri-fried with thin strips of chicken with flavors of coconut, peanut, spice gave the dish such an amazing complex flavor that was so deep and mindblowing. I think this dish could have easily been $30 in a NYC restaurant. It was so good. It came with a small dish of siracha too to dip the noodle in which just made the noodles taste even better! After we were done eating the plates clean, she suggested we try the sticky rice mango dessert. So we thought it sounded good and we got it. She prepared it fresh with the streamy hot fresh sticky rice next to the perfectly riped mango. The dessert was actually my mom's favorite part. When I tried it, I cut a piece of the mango and ate it with a scoop of the rice. And oh man. I just melted into blissful heaven. I felt like I was melting into the dessert. The mango, sticky rice, and coconut milk just dissolves into your mouth with no unpleasant textures. The flavors and textures just work perfectly with each other. I think the mango was the softest, most sweet mango I've ever had in a restraunt before. Overall this place doesn't deserve 5 stars. This place deserves 10 stars. She prepared the food with such love, and detail. The presentation was beautiful and the food was to die for. This tiny place is a hidden gem. We tipped her very well and left very satisfied. If you haven't tried this place before, you need to sit down and experience this food. Trust me. You won't be disappointed.

Be the first to ReplyJust ordered pickup and was so disappointed with my meal I
Just ordered pickup and was so disappointed with my meal I had to update my review. We have too many great Thai restaurants in elmhurst to settle for average or not great Thai food. That's what I got today. My husband got a lackluster pad Khee mao (not much flavor), and my beef pad garlic was so dry and flavorless I could only have a few bites. It tasted as if they put some boiled beef in with rice and threw dried garlic on top. That's it. No sauce or flavor. We've been to Thailand three times, and this is not at all what this meal is supposed to taste like. Even tho we live very close to pata, I doubt we will return.
Be the first to ReplyI found this place through Seated app.
The place is very small, probably only 3-4 tables inside but it gives you the privacy feels lol. The staff is super friendly and the food tastes good with decent portion. They use paper boxes as food containers which I personally like because it helps with the environment. They don't have many choices but enough to fill your craving for Thai foods!Note: Cash only but accept Venmo and Zelle. However, make sure you confirm with the restaurant because that might change.
