The South Street Seaport is a historic neighbourhood in the southeast corner of the Financial District, where Fulton Street meets the riverside. It is bordered by the East River and crossed by that elevated roadway, bizarrely painted a lighter shade of purple.
I hadn’t been here for decades, but remember the old historic timber warehouse building which formed Pier 17. Way back then it was a hive of activity, with shops and cafes. I must say I was a bit disappointed to see its modern replacement, not realising the original structure had been destroyed in Hurricane Sandy and rebuilt in 2018. The complex there was a bit soulless and virtually empty; maybe it was COVID; maybe it was all closed for the holiday season… overall it just lacked historic charm, energy, life, and appeal.
The best thing about Pier 17 then were the various views of New York you got from the pier. Blessed with a glorious sunny day and clear blue skies, we had fabulous views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, the skyline of the Financial District behind it, and across the East River to Brooklyn beyond. You could see at close hand some of the historic shops docked at the various piers beside it, especially the 1908 Lightship Ambrose. I found the three colourful shapes (the heart, the ‘ban the bomb’ emblem, and the smiley face) on the boardwalk quite cheerful, and perfect for some fun photography. We climbed to the rooftop deck for more photographs, from slightly higher angles. Some of the food and cafe outlets were open, but they were empty. There were also bathroom facilities there.
We didn’t visit the nearby South Seaport Museum, but we did see the curious land-locked lighthouse and time-ball directly outside the museum as we walked to Pier 17. This maritime signaling structure doesn’t warn ships of danger any more, but serves as a memorial to the victims of the Titanic which sank in 1912.
By all means visit for the views; perhaps it comes alive at sunset and the evenings.
