Have eaten here many times since the restaurant's inception.
Has generally maintained its consistent quality over the years although portions are smaller and prices are much higher. Unfortunately, this past meal was extremely disappointing. Two portions of the Kolokythakia Kai melitzanakia tyganita ( fried eggplant and zucchini) were left too long in the fryer. it was difficult to tell the difference between the eggplant and zucchini since they were paper thin, dry and many were burnt and tasteless. The Afrata Keftedakia ( meatballs) were also left too long in the same fryer. Two of the meatballs were totally burnt and dried out. They were like eating sawdust. The Dolmathes Avgolemono (stuffed grape leaves) also fell short. The good news was that these weren't fried so they weren't burnt but they were tasteless and fell apart. Overall, the meal was a 5 out of 10. Clearly it must have been the Chef's night out. Check before you go!!

Pylos is a restaurant I went to frequently before the pandemic. However, because of the pandemic I got "out of the habit". I returned last week and was glad to see that the restaurant has maintained its high standards and fair pricing. Known for their appetizers you can make a whole meal out of them. However, if you decide you prefer an entree I recommend the fairly priced lamb chops. I left my credit card behind, which they retained for me and returned the following day, once they confirmed my identify.

Excellent spot for a nice dinner - elegant but not fussy decor and very good food. We were there with older relatives from out of town and it was a brilliant choice for that.
Be the first to Replywow! we have been ordering here regularly for over a year.
tonight, chicken arrived undercooked and completely bland. tzatziki was also tasteless. only thing that was worth mentioning is the salad dressing and flavor of the produce. won't order again

Enjoyed an exceptional meal at Pylos! Definitely would recommend it! Food, atmosphere and service were all top! Normally we go out to Astoria for great Greek, however having decided to stay in town for the evening looked online at the options beyond those Manhattan Greek spots we've dined at over the years. Found Pylos and booked a table. Relatively narrow and long with different spaces, we were seated in the far back half, but that was more than OK. Surprisingly, everyone else was seated up front. Our shared appetizers included the fresh tasty Horiatiki classic Greek village salad, scrumptious Dolmathes avgolemono (i.e., beef, rice, raisin, and pine nut stuffed grape leaves covered in an egg lemon sauce) and the winner, a special - octopus carpaccio with fennel and arugula. Accompanying these, Pylos offered pita bread with a chickpea spread. While one of us selected Moussaka, my entreé was their Agrio lavraki me krousta apo pistachios - pistachio encrusted chunks of stripe bass filet topping a vegetable Napoleon incorporating a pistachio pesto and sheep milk cheese. Delightful and filling especially after our early round of starters, this fish dish left no room for dessert! Would certainly look forward to returning to Pylos for another memorable meal.

We already had reservations for dinner elsewhere, but weren't really feeling it and decided to search for something else. Landed on Pylos and its many great reviews, so we changed plans... and we're so glad we did! A wonderful dinner experience, and probably the BEST meal we had during our trip! The interior is an upscale but casual and comfortable place. The ceiling is creatively lined with clay pots, and tables were neatly organized throughout the long narrow space. Our server, Tamera (I'm sure I spelled that incorrectly, sorry!) was wonderful! She was patient, knowing it was our first time, and she did a wonderful job of guiding us through the menu and helping us narrow down our choices (because we wanted EVERYTHING!!) We started with the complimentary pita and humus, and we ordered pitakia kaisarias- meat and cheese filled phyllo triangles, saganaki, and grilled octopus (htapothi scharas). Fantastic! I initially wanted to try the lamb chops but decided to go with something lighter since we had all those wonderful appetizers. I chose the grilled branzino with patates psites (Greek lemon potatoes) and my husband chose pastitsio, one of his favorites. Everything was absolutely delicious, and the pastitsio was the best restaurant pastitsio we've ever had. Some places are too heavy on the cinnamon, but this was perfect in that it elevated the flavor without overpowering it. We shared a beautiful bottle of wine from the Greek Macedonian region of Florina. Perfect compliment to the meal. We enjoyed an anniversary dessert of Galaktobourekakia. Miniature version of galaktoboureko. Semolina custard filled phyllo triangles drizzled with honey. So delicious! It's also inspired me to try making this style of mini galaktoboureko myself! Eat here, enjoy it, but don't tell everyone about how great it was... we'd like to still be able to get a reservation here when we return! Efharisto, Pylos!

Everything was outstanding service, food and atmosphere. I had the whole fish and my wife had the lamb and both dishes were done to perfection. We will definetly visit again and bring friends over to this hidden gem!

Great ambiance where it was lively but not loud, classy but not stuffy, casual but still refined. I loved our corner cushioned seat in the front dining area. There's also an inner dining area adjacent to the front that is also intimate. Food was high quality, tasty and service was impeccable. We ordered a variety - the feta, avgolemeno soup, octopus, moussaka and pastitsio dishes. Everything was delicious. Even the complimentary pita with dip pre-meal. Wine was served in glass goblets which was a pleasant aesthetic.

A MUST!!! One of the best food establishments I've come across in New York City--the food, the service, the ambiance, the feeling of absolute joy!!! We've been here on several occasions and Pylos always provides the most remarkable dining experiences.
Be the first to ReplyThe best Greek food there is in New York City.
I was absolutely blown away by how delicious these dishes where I felt like it was a mix of Greek and Italian hints. The service overall was incredible and our waitress was working so hard to make sure our dinner was enjoyable. We did have the first reservation of the evening and the restaurant was not warmed up so if I could ask the owner to preheat the restaurant, at least an hour before eight that would be great. I don't like sitting there shivering waiting for the facility to warm up. It's not right. The shrimp was extremely fresh, but I'd like to mention the incredible wine list that they have that is imported directly from Greece. The drinks were nice and strong, and all of us really enjoyed having dinner here.

TLDR: The Lamb is a must try at this spot! The spicy pepper stuffed whipped feta dip was a flavor and texture sensation that set the tone for an exceptional meal. The combination of spiciness and the creamy feta whipped to perfection was a true delight for the taste buds. The main course featured beautifully cooked lamb that showcased the chef's skill and expertise. The meat was tender, and the accompanying sauce was a perfect pairing, enhancing the overall dining experience.

Ambiance is nice and food was decent but personally think it's overpriced & experience was lacking. During our arrival, there was one empty table next us and 7 empty ones on the other side of us. Moments later a couple arrived to be seated and the staff assigned them to the the table RIGHT NEXT TO US like within an arm's reach! I can understand if it was a busy night but it was pretty dead and I knew it wasn't going to fill up since it was 20 degrees outside and snowing, I think they were being too optimistic about people coming but staff should've been realistic and focus more on making sure the customers who are actually here get good service! It got really loud and we were irritated because there was no privacy. You know it's too close when I can barely hear my friend but can perfectly hear what the stranger next to me is saying. I had to ask the waiter TWO times (who had to consult with someone) before she agreed to move us to a further table! NYC is a crowded place as it is...Does anyone really want to pay $100+ for food just to be packed like sardines?! Whoever is the manager here, get your sh*t together and start telling your waiters to space the customers out so your customers can have a good and relaxing experience!
Be the first to ReplyHad such a wonderful dinner here celebrating my birthday.
As we walked in we were greeted and promptly seated in this cozy restaurant. You could smell the aroma of all the dishes and hear the soft voiced conversations going on throughout the restaurant which mostly complemented the dishes they were eating. Our waitress came to our table and went of some wines, appetizers and main dishes to get a feel for what we like. We started off with a glass of wine and the Horiatiki - a classic greek village salad, with fresh tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, capers, kalamata olives, feta and a simple dressing of extra-virgin greek olive oil and red wine vinegar. Absolutely amazing, so fresh and every bite was delicious as well as the presentation. Next up was dinner , i ordered the marinated grilled baby lamb chops, served with mini stuffed eggplants and fingerling potatoes. Let me just say i cleaned my plate and this was hands down the best lamb chops i have had in new york. The flavor the way it was cooked, all perfection. We also ordered the 16 ounces aged prime new york cut sirloin steak, served with greek yiayia's fried potatoes and sautéed spinach. Again the steak was cook perfectly and it was so tender and you could easily cut right through it. The potatoes and spinach were also a hit. Lastly we ended our dinner with dessert, which made it the best dinner in new york and we even discussed how we weren't going to share this place with anyone that's how good it was haha. Oh before i forget the dessert was PYLOS' chocolate mousse spiked with ouzo. Oh my god so, so , so good. I honestly can say this was the first restaurant we went to where we literally cleared every dish clean, and had impeccable service.

Beautiful and cozy little place, the food was delicious and the service is impeccable. The place is not really big but the decor is done very interestingly with clay pots on the ceiling, which makes it interesting and lots and lots of Greek specialties to make your palate dance.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic authentic, high end Greek food.
The octopus is particularly good. And their white wines from Santorini are just divine.

Nice atmosphere, Highly recommended!

I enjoyed the atmosphere and great service. The waitress was so sweet and helpful... I enjoyed desert Greek wine and delicious Greek desert
Be the first to ReplyI had my birthday dinner here and it was everything I had
I had my birthday dinner here and it was everything I had hoped for and more. Starting now, the manager Dimitris was extremely accommodating when I emailed stating that I had a large party in October. He was able to accommodate us all and we received excellent service. I specifically chose this restaurant because of the photos I saw photos of the lamb shann here on yelp. The lamb shank won me over visually but when I got here, it blew my mind! The lamb shank was one of the best I've ever had in my entire life. The flavor, the texture, and the tenderness were stellar. The appetizers and dessert were wonderful. If you're looking for cocktails, they do not have them however, the wine and beer selection is beautiful. I highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplySolid food, lovely atmosphere, knowledgeable wait staff.
The wine list is wonderful. A little pricey for what it is but hey, it's NY. And the food never disappoints... except for the meatballs. Those weren't so great because there wasn't any sauce on them of any kind. But everything else we ordered was delicious. Especially the artichokes in bechamel sauce.
Be the first to ReplyThis place feels like a find.
It's unassuming on a side street on lower east side. But when you walk in it's transformed to Greece. They creatively display all of these clay pots in the ceiling. The service was also warm and friendly. Even after we long overstayed our welcome at the table, the owner offered to take care of us at the bar. Made us feel at home. Finally, the food is great. The fish was fresh. My only slight wish was that they offered wines besides just Green options.

We were visiting NY for the first time and Pylos was highly recommended by friends that visit often. Will definitely be back!

Once again we ate here for a special occasion, and as every previous visit we left very happy. We went at 5:15 on a Wednesday evening and for the first time we so it pretty empty, it was great! Of course when we left at 7 it was full!First of all our waiter Alexander was such a nice guy, attentive, kind, cordial, efficient. The food was as always outstanding, from the delicious trio of Greek dips to the succulent lamb chops, the moussaka and a great braised pork shank. They recently redecorated the place, and perhaps this was also the reason why all prices went considerably up, as everything else in this world! It was the only not great surprise, but it was such a perfect dinner that we did not mind.Still one of my absolute favorite in NYC
Be the first to ReplyA 3 star "OK" review on Yelp isn't a bad review.
It just means that our experience wasn't quite what we were hoping for. The service was very good and though I prefer that my kalamarakia be only lightly breaded, what we tried was tasty. A couple comments:(1) It's my bad that I failed to confirm whether the restaurant served ouzo. Yeah, it's a silly thing, but I was hoping to sip on a nice, upscale ouzo while sampling mezes and chatting with my bride, maybe finishing the meal with some sort of obscure Greek brandy or other liqueur. The place does have an interesting wine list and a couple Greek beers, though when one has ouzo (or tsipouro or even a Turkish raki) on the mind, a glass of house red ain't gonna cut it.(2) On-line photos of the dining area indicated an interesting ceiling lined with terra cotta jugs. The jugs are definitely there, but below them are dark fine meshed "nets" that obscured the view and drastically muted the effect. It's almost as if the nets were installed as a safety measure in case one of the jug mounts failed. Weird.(3) The tables in the dining area as you enter are way too small. The meal service becomes a never-ending series of plate swapping and exercises in topological management in order to fit your food to the table surface. That gets old after a while. You'd probably be fine if you ordered a single appetizer and completely finished it off and had it removed before your salad, which you completely finished off and had it removed before the next course, etc. But if you are looking for a leisurely meal of mezes, it just wouldn't work without a lot of intervention and fussing about by the waiters.(4) The spacing between you and your neighbors is way too tight. I get it. NY is an expensive place to operate a restaurant and like airlines, packing folks in may be the only way to not go bankrupt. But we could listen to every word softly spoken by the people on either side of us and they could listen to us. It got claustrophobic after a while, and as a result we decided to leave early.I'd go back if the opportunity presented itself, but I'd now know what to expect and what not to expect. their food took me to a flavor town that even the greek gods would come down for...and the service was bomb!!! the only constructive feedback i'd leave would be around giving me n the strangers next door to my table some more elbow room but as u can see that didn't subtract any stars se efcharisto!
