I was extremely excited to try this restaurant during my
I was extremely excited to try this restaurant during my visit to Sydney. Initially I was skeptical because a lot of restaurants with such amazing views bank on their location and view rather than food quality and become gimmicky. Quay was far from gimmicky and I was blown away in all categories. Initially I was researching high end restaurants in Australia and Quay came up ranked near the top. I didn't want to book too early because I wasn't sure about my travel arrangements. Luckily my gf and I were able to get an reservation about 4 days in advanced. On arrival, we had no issues with our reservation. Most of the tables are faced towards the opera house and we had a wonderful table with both our chairs with a clear view. Only downside was it was next to a private room with an automatic door which was annoying if you move your arm it automatically opens the door. We ordered the 6 course meal. I normally write a review on every menu item that we tried but I feel like it will ruin the experience for you and I want to keep the dishes new and exciting for everyone who hasn't tried it. Most of the menu items are seafood however so if you aren't a seafood fan, you may not like the type of food here. Nothing was overly fishy or "seafoody" tasting because it was super fresh and seasoned absolutely perfectly. The staff was incredibly attentive. To top off our night, a spontaneous fireworks show happened at the end of our dinner! My gf and I have been traveling the world trying Michelin star restaurants and Quay definitely ranks top 3. The food quality, price and service with the amazing ambiance of the incredible view of the Opera house is unmatched. I definitely want to come back to Quay next time I'm in Sydney. Thank you Quay for topping off the end of our Australian trip!
Exceptional view
This restaurant on the harbor has a magnificent view of the Sydney Opera House which is just opposite, especially at sunset. The condition, however, is that there is no liner moored in front. If there is a cruise ship like the day we went, you have to wait for the ship to leave (around 7:45 p.m. in our case). Excellent menu, but service between courses a little slow.
Just fabulous!
We arrived in Sydney and did not have a reservation; the staff were just wonderful and accommodated our booking at quite short notice. We had the 6 course menu with Beluga caviar and matching wines. The service was outstanding, we had a wonderful waitress, the food was exceptional and the matching wines were just delicious. If you are in Sydney and enjoy fine food then Quay is an absolute must! Highly recommended.
Rockstar views, basic service
Had been before and was excited to return but evening fell flat. Had 8 courses and the basic wine paring. Food ok and the surprise snacks were delicious, sommelier difficult to understand due to language barrier, waiter pushy - not the experience Iโve had previously. For $600 p.p inc the wine flight i expected exceptional. The view is amazing and fireworks were a bonus!!!
We had a nice Sunday late dinner at Quay.
First: the view was astonishing and the presence of the Sydney Opera House and Harbor Bridge as your dining companions is unforgetable. Foodwise, we had the six-course tasting menu. It was delicious. It was still a bit too much food. The dishes were ornate, diverse and tasty - basically met the bill, but struck us as a shade below the comparable Michelin-starred benchmarks we've tried elsewhere. We kind of thought Quay is resting a bit on its reputation and the view. The wine pairing was just too much alcohol and led to significant next-day hangovers - would strongly discourage. As the last patrons on a Sunday, it seemed the wait staff was exhausted and just could not get rid of us fast enough. We eat at a relatively quicker pace anyway, but they were really going through the motions in explaining the ornate dishes, and at one point our waitress just disappeared (while ostensibly asking the chef the answer to a question), replaced by a colleague similarly ready to see us through the motions as quickly as possible. It is, of course, very expensive. On the whole, a very memorable experience, but not as great as others we had in Australia (e.g., Penfolds Magill Estate Restaurant in Adelaide).
Delightful food and beautiful view
I visited Sydney for the first time & also to go on to the cruise to NZ with my aunt. I stayed in Sydney for almost 4 days before getting on the cruise. I managed to book three days of fine dining when I was there. Quay was one of them. I love to try new restaurants & always reserve table to eat at the best one in the city that I visited. Quay was good though not the best. Good presentation and some interesting dishes. I also went with their pairing wines and they went well with the food. Though the dinner was a bit rush because I thought the dinner was at 6:30 instead of 6:00 & I have to be out by 8:00. I still tipped them because they are doing a good job of explaining the dishes and wines. Overall experiences was pleasant.
Went on an impromptu trip to Sydney and wanted to dine at
Went on an impromptu trip to Sydney and wanted to dine at the finest place Sydney had to offer! Based off of all my research, Quay was it! Location wise it was amazing with perfect views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House We had a fantastic lunch! Food was spectacular. The dishes were so beautiful and carefully prepared. Each one was flavorful and Chef Peter Gilmore has perfected the dishes to a tee! I added on the reservation that it was our anniversary but nothing was mentioned. Nobody wished us a Happy Anniversary. It was kind of sad. I think this could have been avoided if I was asked when we sat if we were celebrating anything special.
"Meh"
We were greeted by the hostess with a warning to finish within 2 hours because they had a later reservation. There are nicer ways to tell a table to finish up. Certainly it should not be the first thing you say--we were not late for our 6:00pm reservation. West upstairs, with I gather is considered prime. The view of the Opera House is always blocked by a large cruse ship , but you can see the rest of the harbor. The tables do not have table cloths, nor flowers, seasonings, etc. I rate the ambiance as poor. The servers were professional but not welcoming. It is inexpensive place. The only option is to oder the tasting menu--6 to 8 courses. Plus wine. Portions are small. The food was fine--precious, in a word. It cannot compare to a restaurant like Le Bernadin, in NYC or The French Laundry in Napa, Ca.
Fine Dining Must in Sydney
I feel like Quay is the bucket list for Sydney restaurants-goers. Obviously expensive, but youโre not just paying for the food.. youโre paying for the name and overall experience. With the exception of the oyster butter bites (Iโm sure thereโs a proper name for them, lol), I loved every aspect of the experience. The waiter was incredibly knowledgeable about wine and was able to suggest a bottle that both me (sweet tooth) and my partner (wine connoisseur) could equally enjoy. Staff were all attentive and the whole experience was memorable. Canโt wait to come back and enjoy a different menu!
The Quay (pronounced quee) is the most celebrated
The Quay (pronounced quee) is the most celebrated restaurants in the Australian cuisine with awarded with three hats for 21 years . The dining terrace has a beautiful view of the opera house and the Sydney harbor bridge . Staff was excellent and kept rewarding me with extra desert. Fine dining with a spectacular view.
Top! Refined, surprising dishes accompanied by unusual wines. Attentive and friendly service. Highly recommended in Sydney! A small downside: it is very noisy.
AWFUL RESTAURANT!!!!!
This was the worst restaurant my husband and I have ever been to. The lady at the reception/check in was rude and obnoxious. My husband and I had a hard time finding the entrance to the restaurant so we were a few minutes late and she rudely told us we had to be finished in an hour because another reservation was right behind ours. She was clearly in a rush as she walked us to our table..and so were the servers. They were constantly hovering over our table ready to clear up course after course to keep us moving. We could not finish one sentence in our conversation before someone else appeared to ask if we were done. Clearly they are more focused on the numbers and on profits and on moving people along. The food was mediocre. All the savory courses tasted the same as if they were cooked with the same broth. And we paid $540 for our dinner for 2โa one hour rushed dinner with staff whoโve been trained to rush people in and out. AVOID THIS RESTAURANT PLEASE. Go to Aria instead or Mr. Wongโs!! Those 2 are fantastic restaurants in Sydney!!
Others leave Quay in their wake
We dine out regularly and have been fortunate enough to eat at restaurants like Vue du Monde in Melbourne, Fino in the Barossa Valley and Wickens in Dunkeld. We expected something similar in quality terms tonight, even perhaps having our expectations exceeded. Overall I would have to say we were disappointed with the food and the ambiance. We ate upstairs in the smaller dining room. The tables have minimal dressing and you only need one "loud" table to kill the atmosphere. The views are spectacular despite the Opera House side being obscured by a massive cruise ship but it is what takes place within the dining room that establishes the vibe. We opted for a six course tasting menu and ordered a bottle of champagne (price was just over double retail). The food was innovative but the portion sizes tiny. The protein was cut scalpel thin and in many cases overwhelmed by other elements of the dish. Compared to other fine dining restaurants in Australia and overseas it is the smallest portion sizes we have ever experienced. We weren't looking for the Tuesday night schnitzel special at the local club, just something memorable and value for money - we didn't get either. Wickens at the Royal Mail in Dunkeld for example offers generous tasting portions prior to the set menu and artisan bread and butter to mop up the delicious sauces - they were so delicious it would have been a crime not to do so. At Quay there was no such generosity. The staff were friendly and attentive but ambient noise levels, once all the tables were occupied, made conversation difficult and it was also hard to hear the descriptions of the dishes. So after spending nearly $600 for food for two people we left thinking about what cheese we had in the fridge for when we got home - we were still hungry. We mentioned to somebody we met at a function earlier in the week that we were looking forward to eating at Quay. "It's not for me", she said. We would have to agree, it's not for us either..
A few minor details
We were so looking forward to dining at this restaurant before we arrived in Sydney. The food was excellent. We had the tasting menu. The ambience and view excellent. Staff friendly. However a couple of elements needing perfection. Our wine was not the correct temperature and could not be served. Sadly our first three courses of the tasting menu was served without wine! Not something you expect from a restaurant with such a high accolade. On receiving our bill at the end of the evening a more expensive bottle of wine had been added to the bill.
Devine experience
Excellent on everything! The food, service and the atmosphere. I had such a great time at the Quay restaurant. My top 3 cuisine were: โขTasmanian White Asparagus mud crab custard โขSouthern Rock Lobster Sea Urchin, Koshihikari rice Marigold broth โข Maitake mushrooms blacklip abalone schmaltz, garum, sour koji OMG, they were so nice!!! Staff there was very friendly and helpful. I would surely visit there again. Thank you for the lovely night!
Disappointing Food, Great View & Service.
My wife and I dined here hoping for a great experience to try a top rated restaurant and we were extremely unsatisfied with the food. Beyond the food, the environment & service were very pleasant which included a great view of Sydney Harbor. We did a 6 course tasting meal. The combinations of ingredients created a nauseating taste one meal after the next, from the pallet cleanser to the dessert! Some were too salty while others were too buttery and creamy. For the expensive price you pay, it should be nearly perfect! The chef seemed to focus more on the design before the taste. My wife and I may not be extreme foodies but have adventurous palates. We both struggled on keeping the food down. Plates were very small and we were still hungry! Save your money - go to a really great local boutique restaurant or Pub! Sorry team, we will not be back.
Traveling on business, I dined at Quay with a friend.
With the 8-course degustation, the portion size was ideal and left us pleasantly sated. Four of the courses were truly exquisite. The 2nd course was raw Albrolhos Island scallops from Western AUS, which were firm textured, buttery, and naturally sweet. Served on a bed of katsuobushi cream (smoked and fermented skipjack tuna) with sea cucumber crackling and topped with Murray cod roe, the crunchy sea cucumber absorbed the savory flavor of katsuobushi with a truly memorable result. Moreover, the cod roe accented the dish perfectly. The 4th course was dancing Japanese mushrooms (Maitake), black lip abalone, magical schmaltz (nondairy butter flavor from goose fat), garum, and koji. In short, an umami wet dream. The 6th course was Maremma duck (free range pasture-raised) served with a medley of tasty, fresh vegetables - white sprouting broccoli, Jerusalem artichoke, Chinese cabbage (Hispi), and heirloom spigarello (like broccoli). The duck was perfectly prepared (medium rare), with crunchy skin and incredibly succulent meat. Mouthwatering, although arguably out of place given the seafood leitmotif. Nonetheless, had I dined on duck alone, the meal would not have been any less memorable. Of course, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the famous White Coral dessert (7th course) - French white chocolate, cream & eggs treated with liquid nitrogen (giving a coral appearance), atop chocolate mousse, mango ice cream, and coconut cream. A perfect near finish. Stunning views of Sydney's harbor and semicentennial opera house offered world-class ambience. Kudos to the attentive waitstaff, especially Monique, as well as to the maestro himself, Head Chef Troy Crisante.
Arguably the best food I've ever eaten.
Had the five course menu, and some white wine. Absolute works of art on the plate and in my mouth. If I'm ever in Sydney again this is at the top of my list of places to revisit. The dishes were well balanced, flavorful, creative (eel cream, crunch sea cucumber and the ice cream at the end especially) and most importantly delectable. The service was spot on perfect. Best service I've ever had outside of the USA and it rivaled the best service I've ever had inside the USA also. Left a decent tip, whatever they get paid, as hard as they worked they deserve it. The ambiance was perfect too. We had a table by the big picture glass window overlooking Sydney harbor, the bridge and the opera house. Then the fireworks started. The portions seemed small but this fat American left full.

Working on your bid? |
Your bid has been โmatchedโ with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted. |
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from? |
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered? |
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
