I was rushing by looking for a restaurant that no longer existed due to Covid. I decided to go to Karl Johan instead and it was a great decision.The lovely server immediately gave me some bread with the best tapenade I've ever eaten. It was a combo of olives and dried tomatoes with tons of flavour, but very little salt.I started with the traditional Finnish Vorschmack. It takes three days to make this delicious beef and fish mush. It's served with chopped onions, beets, pickles, sour cream and a large dollop of mashed potato's. It's the perfect comfort food and I could get seriously addicted to Vorschmack!!!Everyone around me was happily ordering pork schnitzels.I ordered the green risotto. It had a lot of vegetables in it: green beans, arugula / rocket and fresh peas. I found it bland and missing a taste direction.I do not recommend the chocolate dessert, it was the least impressive part of the meal. I think they need to up their dessert game. Based on the description, I thought it would be a chocolate mousse, but instead a dense hard cube of chocolate ganache arrived with a Basil flavoured green whipped cream. Toasted Quinoa was sprinkled on top which led to an unpleasant, gritty taste sensation. Totally unnecessary addition to the dessert.

I had dinner with a large group from a congress and we were served really well, even though we spoke no Finnish and some of us spoke little English. The food was absolutely lovely. I had reindeer, which was delicious, and my friends had various dishes. Everyone enjoyed their meals.

Excellent well-balanced salad, followed by a delicious reindeer stew. Best Scandinavian dinner we've had so far. The staff was pleasant and attendant to our needs and (American questions)

An unexpected treasure!After arriving in Helsinki and checking into our hotel around 8:30pm, we knew we would be lucky to find food on Monday. Imagine our surprise, that we exited our hotel and walked 40 feet and saw Karljohan. The woman who took care of us may have been the owner. The service and the food were exceptional and we were delighted with every aspect of our experience. The freshness of the ingredients and the interesting combinations were a treat for our palates. Having eating at several Michelin star restaurants, I have to agree with the previous reviewer that this place deserves some recognition.We had green salads - fresh and tasty. The nuts are a delightful addition and I loved the soft leafy lettuces. My boyfriend had the asparagus starter with Hollandaise and parmesan cheese, as well as the Goat Cheese main course, which was more of the Green Salad (though a much larger portion) as his entrees. I had the Fresh asparagus with roasted parsnip, dill potatoes and morel sauce as my entree. All of the food was delightful.I would note than neither of us is a vegetarian but after a few days eating food that wasn't as fresh and lovely as this, we were both craving quality veggies. I hope to be able to go back for another meal before we depart Helsinki. The Beef tenderloin steak with garlic potatoes and thyme sauce would be on top of my list to try and I would absolutely have the Green salad again as well as trying the Jerusalem artichoke soup with scallop and parmesan cheese. Yum. My mouth is already salivating at the thought!

Great food, exquisite presentation of the dishes and comfortable home like atmosphere.Most of the customers are locals.In my opinion this restaurant deserves a Michelin star, but the size of the portions are honest.Place is small and popular so make a reservation in advance.
