Quality time at the amazing restaurant
3rd time to dine in at this restaurant in paris. As always food was amazingly delicious and the staff was friendly. They recognized my friend who was with me last visit and treated us like their close friends. And the foodwise, honestly I had the best meal in france among all of the starred restaurants. From the beginning of the course(salsifi) it just blowed my mind. Every single dish was balanced, well seasoned, warm plate, components, acidity, presentation, decoration and so many details make me feel that the food was prepared with the heart. And also soft pairing was very interesting.l would highly recommend this restaurant if you want to spend your quality time.

First visited David Toutain 3 years ago, and had a memorable evening. Dined there again last night, and had a completely different experience. While the food is still very good to excellent, the service is likely the worst I have ever encountered at a high end restaurant. From the uncomfortable greeting at the door, to the end of the dinner 4 hours later and a cold goodbye, it was a frustrating experience. At least 6 waiters served us and all were smileless, robotic and downright unpleasant. There were far too many gaps left between courses, including a 45 min wait between the amuse -bouches and being handed the menus (during which time our flatware and empty razor clam shells remained on a plate in front of us). Course descriptions were half mumbled before the waiters would run away to the next table. Could it be that the restaurant has expanded and is short staffed, or that Mr. Toutain has hired the wrong staff and has not provided proper training? It doesn't really matter- in the end, as the previous reviewer mentions, the restaurant has lost its soul and that is something difficult to recover.

We had lunch at David Toutain pre-COVID and were greatly looking forward to visiting again. Unfortunately, dinner this time was a letdown. There were certainly things to be positive about - most of the courses were very good with a few instances of brilliance sprinkled in. But an enjoyable dinner is more than putting away good food. For us, the entire evening was super rushed, it felt like sitting at a conveyer belt for high end food as we got peppered with one dish after another, with no time to relax whatsoever. On top of that the restaurant was woefully understaffed for such an operation and the servers were scrambling all evening to keep up with the pace of the kitchen. As soon as we finished one course the next one was delivered, very quickly described in one sentence, and then the server sprinted off. This also created issues for the sommelier, who apologized sincerely when he fell behind pouring the wine (we had the wine pairings, which were table wines well matched with the food) and needless to say, the sommelier had even less time than the servers to explain what he was delivering. A few more examples: with much fanfare a piece of butter was produced after the amuse-bouches (the smallest producer in France, only two places in Paris sell the butter, etc etc), but the travesty was that not a single piece of bread emerged over the course of the entire evening. So after several hours, with much less fanfare, the untouched butter and the unused bread basket were removed again. The candle on our table went out half way through the meal, it remained that way until the end of the evening. With the bill we also got a sheet listing the wine pairings, but it would have been a nice touch to note which wines had to be replaced in the pairings that evening. When we asked for a taxi, we were asked in return if we minded getting ourselves an Uber. If you expect impeccable service at a Michelin star restaurant, David Toutain is not for you. I do not blame the staff for this, I think they were put in an impossible situation. We both felt that the restaurant has lost its soul.

Terrible experience!! We were charged for caviar without our knowledge. we found a hair in one of the dishes... and we received no apology / no compensation. Astronomical price not worth the experience. Terrible service. do not order !!!!!

I am writing here not about service but about the entire process of pre- and post-service experience I encountered with David Toutain -- for complete lack of communication from it and punishment i got from my no-show after confirmed cancellation. I reserved a table for two at 9:00om on Sept. 13 via TheFolk. in the afternoon of SEpt. 13, my wife did not feel good so that we tried to cancel. i send a message to The Folk and got a confirmed cancellation message - for which i presumed that everything was fine and we did not need to go the restaurant. Unlike other Michelin restaurants we visited in Paris who sent our confirmation directly to my emails, David Toutain never sent any confirmation directly to me - as a customer dealing with TheFolk, i had to presume the reservation was cancelled. in the morning of Sept. 14, i received a message directly (first-time ever) from David Toutain that the restaurant charged me 560EU for no-show. In the following two days, i sent three messages to the restaurant and explained the situation with confirmed cancellation. I did not any message back. BTW, the restaurant has my email, and US phone number. It never bothered to phone me or text me when i did not show up to ask for reason (otherwise, I could have just walked over there to have the dinner on my own). If never bothered to confirm with me the reservation before the meals; and it never bothered to mailed me back to explain or come up with a resolution or even listen to my situation (what happens that a customer got COVID and had to go to the restaurant to contaminate others?). and it charges 560 EU for non-show as a punishment for meal costing on average 130 EU PP. Having dined in many Michelin starred restaurant in many countries, this is the first time and the worst experience i have had. David Toutain completely lacks the communication with guests, are very rude and unprofessional in keeping total silence excepting eagerness to charge the punishment, and punish guests. I am not restaurant like this kind should be removed from Michelin ranking, as Michelin to me, is excellent food plus excellent service.

Had dinner here with my 15-year-old son. It was his first tasting-menu experience. The food was, unsurprisingly, both exceptional and creative. Just as important was the experience. These types of restaurants can be intimidating - especially for a teenager: new food; different cutlery, etc.. The staff went of their way to help us (and him) understand the food. Each dish was served with a smile, an explanation, and welcomed questions (of which there were many). While I was impressed by the food it was the service that really stuck with me.

My daughter and I were very excited to dine here as we heard great things. While I was still looking at the wine list they started to bombard us with amuse bouches and they were piling up on the table. While they were all rather tasty, it was a lot in a very small period of time all before I had even picked out the wine. I eventually ordered what should have been a spectacular bottle of white Burgundy, a 2014 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet. I have this wine in my own cellar and have tasted it more than half a dozen times already. Unfortunately this particular bottle was corked and undrinkable. The main sommelier was out sick and the backup sommelier, who was in their early 20s, refused to acknowledge that the bottle was corked. It wasn't even clear he knew what corked meant. Unfortunately no one else on the staff seemingly had any knowledge of wine and weren't willing or able to say the bottle was flawed. Restaurants typically take flawed bottles back and get refunded by their supplier but in this case they forced me to pay for it despite the fact that we didn't drink it. The cherry on top of this was that they brought me the wrong bill at the end of the meal, which was how much my meal and good bottle of replacement wine I selected should have cost, but I am not a criminal so I pointed out the error and paid for the much larger bill including the flawed bottle of wine. In the end this restaurant cheated me out of over 1,000 euros for a bad bottle of wine, while I selected not to cheat them. I will never go back here and I suggest you do the same, or else they may make you too pay for a bottle of flawed wine.

We treated ourselves for our anniversary with this wonderful restaurant and a magnificent meal. As much as I was looking forward to it, it was intimidating to enter into a Michelin star restaurant but friendly and down-to-earth staff really took care of us and put us at ease throughout the entire meal. Every dish was so elegant, beautifully decorated, creative and superb. I recognised some twists of ingredients from Japanese cuisine (which in my opinion adds extra elegance to the flavour) and later on I had the pleasure to say hello to the chef and found out that he did work in Japan in the past. I took my time with each bite, appreciating the texture, design and mixture of flavours on each plate. The creativity and the idea of the chef really blew me away. Throughout the service, wonderful and friendly staff did so much to make our visit so special in spite of a very busy day (they found out about our anniversary). Many thanks to the charming restaurant manager Marco and his staff (especially Roberto and Francois), we had an unforgettable experience! Sad to see that some people are only focused on the negative in their comments. Some people are born to complain without being able to appreciate good things in life even when facing such fine dining experience.

My boyfriend and I came here for lunch on our last day in Paris and, rather than being the highlight of our time in the city, this lunch was a huge disappointment. First, despite a nearly empty dining room downstairs, they sat us upstairs in a dark corner. We soon came to realize that they collected all the English-speakers up there, which is efficient for the waitstaff, but definitely gave us the sense that we were second-class patrons. Once seated, it took us nearly 20 minutes to receive any type of service or a drink, and then once we did, the staff bombarded us with amuse bouche after amuse bouche, taking plates away before we were even finished. They presented the menu options in a way that made it feel like a tacky chain restaurant, with a 30 euro up-charge if you add X or Y seasonal ingredient. At this price point, I would have expected such things to be included already (and we had found them to be included at other restaurants we visited during our stay). Then once the six courses started, we were horrified. I can’t profess to have the most sophisticated palate, but I know asparagus shouldn’t be a stringy mush. The execution was poor throughout and we grew to dread the next course rather than be excited for it. The service was awkward and rushed during the presentation of the dishes and wines, but terribly slow and absent in all other times. Three hours later, we were again asked if we wanted to add an additional course for an additional price and we declined and ultimately we’re served the best course: dessert. I recommend that you just go to Frenchie twice rather than pay these prices for oddly terrible food and service.

Firstly (and my major gripe) - we arrived 7 minutes late for a 1.30pm reservation, red faced and panting slightly. We were attended to by a lady who informed us that she had our reservation down for 1pm but that it was "not a problem". Now, when someone tells me something is "not a problem" I just shrug and say ok. Because, you know, it's not a problem right? No need to make a big deal out of it? Well, we then proceeded to have one of the most circular conversations of my life "it's not a problem" "ok" "but we have you down for 1pm" "ok, we did book 1.30 though" "here it says 1pm but like I said it's not a problem" As the minutes ticked by and we remained standing awkwardly in the entryway repeating variations of this conversation it began to dawn on me that there may actually, in fact, be a problem. Had to whip out my phone and attempt to retrieve the reservation details utilizing my very spotty data connection. When we did manage to prove that our reservation was for 1.30pm and not 1pm we were given a quick "ok sorry" and then (and only then) shown promptly to our table. Was it a problem? I do not know. But I'll wager you don't keep customers standing in the doorway for five minutes if it's not a problem. Second - the food. It was pleasant. I have nothing bad to say about it but nothing stood out about it. It was executed well, though the flavor combinations were nothing to write home about. It was fine enough for a nice meal out but no need to go out of your way. On the food - we had written in to request no beef or lamb. This was acknowledged but did not appear to have made its way to the kitchen / servers. No issue, they checked before serving and I requested no red meat. We then got served veal. Is veal a red meat? Google seems divided. Regardless, when queried it was explained that veal is considered a white meat and that was it. A tad disappointing, I did not finish this course. Third - drinks. Asked if I could get a drink, was given a veritable folio of wine choices. Asked if they had beers or cocktails, was informed that only one beer is offered (Alouettes by les bières de Belleville if anyone was wondering). It was alright, won't knock your socks off. Kind of wonder how it managed to become sole beer on offer. TLDR: it's fine for a nice meal out but nothing special. Pick it, don't pick it. Your life will remain unchanged. PS don't show up late for your meal.
Be the first to ReplyA restaurant to avoid unless you want to lose 4 hours of your life
The food was average for Paris especially considering the price range. However, overall proteins were cooked well and the sauces were very richly seasoned. This was a very long meal - 4 hours for 10 courses (that we did not complete) and there were obviously some problems in the kitchen. The chef was yelling quite often. It would have been fine if they were piling on food for four hours but we spent most of the time waiting between courses. It took half an hour for the dessert course to come after the cheese course, at which point we decided we had enough and called for the check. The wine pairing was really mediocre. Very predictable wines that really didn’t do anything for the food. It was perplexing when the somewhat haughty sommelier told us that he could not change the wines served in the pairing (we had asked if it was possible to have more red wine) then proceeded to serve us wines that were all available by the glass on the wine list. We might as well have ordered red wine by the glass… There was another strange waiter who kept prefacing every presentation of a dish to us with “I don’t know what this is” and feigning ignorance. Maybe this is a really funny joke in France, but after the first time or two, it simply became annoying especially when we had been waiting so long for food. We settled the bill before we were served all our courses because we just wanted to get out of the restaurant. First time I haven’t completed a tasting menu.

The seating arrangement was thoughtful, one thin glass away from the chef for someone dining solo is great. The food is the best that I had during the trip.

Such an amazing meal. The food was creative, beautifully presented, and executed flawlessly. Staff were all incredibly friendly and charming and we felt really welcome there. Every dish had a surprising element and that’s something I love from Michelin star places- there is a creativity that is hard to find. You try new things in new ways that you could have never imagined. We were in the room with the window into the kitchen and it was amazing to see the focus- from cooking and making sure things were balanced to the rigor with the plating. The chef was involved in every step of the way. You could see the chef looking out and observing the guests to make sure people were enjoying the incredible creations. I honestly don’t understand some of the negative reviews on here. Everyone has a different experience so not invalidating that. The restaurant industry has been hit extremely hard by the pandemic and staffing restaurants has been challenging. Perhaps that’s what happened with some people on here but our experience couldn’t have been further from that. This place was phenomenal and we loved every second.

Service was great, the place was pleasant enough, but the food was nothing special…it was subpar considering the hype. Wouldn’t go back nor recommend it.

loved loved loved the entire experience! wine was beautiful, every single course blew our mind! the presentation camouflaged the beauty of each course and i believe that was on purpose, but once it landed on the palate, all we could say was ‘wow!’.
splendid service, very friendly waiters who were very willing to explain, or assist. amazing meal and so very filling!

A great place for a special occasion
We went for my wife's 40th birthday celebration and had the 10 course menu with wine pairing. Food was fabulous, delicious and well presented with a great variety in what was on offer across the 10 courses. The wines were well selected and complemented the food perfectly. Service was efficient and attentive with the right amount of human touch. One to go out of your way for.

We went there for lunch and it took a very special 3 and a half hours to enjoy.
You would not go there just to eat when you are hungry but the experience and unique foods and tastes were great! The only problem is when you claim that you do not eat something take care it can be just a simple(r) vegetable version, not something as everyone else having.
Outstanding
No words needed, just surprise from start to finish, creative and great balance of flavor,a really gastronomic experience!
Be the first to ReplyWhat a wonderfull discovery of taste
On a customer invitation, I had the chance to have lunch at this marvelous restaurant.
We opted for the 6 course menu.
From start to finish, it was a trip of surprises:I had never seen a dessert with mushrooms.
The amuses were peices of art, for they eye and the mouth.
In between all that, it was a walk in taste discovery.
This is a real top restaurant.
Very inconsistent from plates to staff
When you go to ** stars Michelin you are usually in for a unique experience and a very special moment which brings you to basically another dimension for a few hours. There is lack of consistence from the room to the tables. Tables decoration, set up is poor and minimalist but it would be OK if that was the goal. You find minimalism in some of the dishes which were good (lobster) but honestly there is no huge surprise and clearly nothing I have not eaten in other Michelin restaurants more creative. Service is way too long, aside from a young and dynamic waitress and the sommelier who was very willing to help, the experience is very inconsistent. Desserts was honestly painful. We did not feel welcome. My friend had been there in 2019 and had had a great experience then reason why we came for his bday. First time and last time for me. There are way better options in Paris
