Rey's Restaurant Raleigh Reviews from The Last Year
Good event restaurant
I took my wife and daughter for Mother’s Day, we were looking for an event restaurant at the same time as avoiding UNC, Duke and NC State graduation. A friend recommended Rey’s and we were quite happy. Coincidentally we were in New Orleans a few weeks ago, we didn’t book Rey’s because of its New Orleans style, but we definitely felt it when we were there. I was impressed with the breadth of the menu, very challenging deciding what to order with many great options both as starters, salads and main courses. I ended up starting with the carpaccio, which had a lot of flavor outside the beef, as you sometimes just get nice meat but this was a more complete dish. I particularly liked the accompanying greens, they had quite a nice dressing. I ordered a ribeye medium rare as my main, it was also cooked perfectly and a nice steak. I added soft onions and although they were not world changing. I also found the sides simply okay. The better was the creamed spinach, which was nice but not the creamiest I have had. I did not particularly enjoy the asparagus, thin asparagus, nothing special. For dessert, we shared bananas foster, largely for the presentation and it lived up to it. Our waiter did a great job, the bananas tasted good, and they were nice enough to split it into three servings, each with sufficient ice cream. Service was very professional. Overall ambience was among the most formal I have experienced in the Triangle (very similar to Ruth Chris, not coincidentally also with NO roots), you didn’t need a jacket but you would not be out of place without it. Overall, an excellent event restaurant.
A very special place
Rey's is a surprising gem in an "0ff the beaten path" location but the entire experience here will be fondly remembered by all who attend. The food is spectacular, the atmosphere is warm and friendly and the staff is welcoming and entertaining. For truly fine dining Rey's is not to be missed.
Excellent service and fabulous food!
My family went to Rey’s last night to celebrate my mother’s 80th birthday. We reserved a private room, as we can sometimes be a rowdy bunch! The food and the service were perfect! The fried oyster over succotash appetizer was to die for, as was the crème brûlée and flourless chocolate cake. The staff couldn’t have been nicer, checking in on us frequently and seeing to our needs.
Loved It!
Our meal was great and the service was exemplary. Our server went above and beyond, as did all the staff, including Rey himself who is a delight and was kind enough to visit our table. As many others have already known for years, this place is a Raleigh treasure.
Lovely, but some misses
Our server provided outstanding service. She was properly attentive and asked the kitchen to prepare Cherries Jubilee as that was the dessert we wanted, and we did not know, nor did their website indicate, that they would have a limited menu for Valentine's, which would not include Cherries Jubilee. Strange, they had Bananas Foster but not Cherries Jubilee on Valentine's. Also, I saw no valid reason for them to have a limited menu as the restaurant did not seem any busier than a normal Friday or Saturday. If a restaurant is going to have a limited menu, it should be posted on their website. Our steaks were very good and seasoned properly. We ordered them Oscar Style, and it had a good amount of lump crab, but there was not nearly enough Hollandaise Sauce. We ordered mashed potatoes and sauteed mushrooms as our sides. The mashed potatoes were fine, but too creamy.....no much texture or body to them. The sauteed mushrooms were more steamed than sauteed. Pretty flavorless and way under sauteed, if they even were. Our starter, the calamari was average. The basil aioli sauce was very good, but again, very little of it. The Cherries Jubilee was very good. Based on the steak and the Cherries Jubilee, I am generously giving the food 4-stars, but because the starter and sides were lacking, the food overall would be 3 1/2 stars.
Excellent food, missing server
We had a 6 pm reservation for my husband’s birthday. Arrived to birthday greetings from all staff as well as a hand written birthday card…lovely! They were also hosting a holiday party for a group and one of those retirement company events, both in private rooms. The main dining room had many staff circulating. We ordered the petit filet with side mashed potatoes (both excellent) and chicken piccata and steamed spinach (both very good). It was a slow wait for our mains but they arrived in a reasonable time for such a full house. Bread basket had large slices of bread with butter while we waited. Filet was a little overdone for medium rare but still excellent. Our lead server was a woman with glasses and bun. The assistant servers popped by often to refill waters. Once our mains were finished (requested a take home for remained as we were full), and assistant boxed them up for us. Other assistants popped by three times to remove bread then side plates then silverware. No sign of lead server to check on our satisfaction or offer dessert or check. The male server at the next table popped by often and was quick to have the check ready, commenting he knew they mentioned they had a show at the Carolina Theatre. Our server finally arrived with a dessert menu and commented that a complimentary birthday dessert was any choice except bananas foster (our favorite, which we would have paid to have if the wait hadn’t been so long and now we were feeling truly full) or cherries jubilee. My husband opted to have the chocolate raspberry truffle cake to go. The server took our credit card and dropped off the check afterwards, but after another 15 minutes or so still no cake so we flagged an assistant server to check on it. The lead server did come by a bit later with no apology for the wait. We would have spent more money and left probably a half hour sooner if the server had been more prompt, allowing Rey’s to turn the table for the next guest much sooner. The server at the next table seemed more timely (and friendly) so maybe ours just had too many customers or wasn’t as efficient. As always, the food was excellent. And the cake we consumed at home was delicious as well. It may be that more responsibility needs to be delegated to assistants to keep the flow at a better speed.
Great experience
Everything about Rey's is excellent. From the friendly greeting to the food. The scallop appetizer is the best we have ever had. The broiled flounder was excellent as was the salmon. Our waiter JT was fun, efficient, and friendly. We can't wait to go back again.
First Time Experience
We ate in a small dining room with 4 other couples which was good because the restaurant was quite loud. Staff were great. Several different meals chosen. I picked veal piccata and was slightly disappointed in the sauce which was more like gravy. Veal was tender. My wife had veal Marsala which was actually a bigger portion than mine and very good. Nice desserts.
Terrible 2023 Thanksgiving expeirence
I want to preface this review with the fact that my wife, daughter, and I have been big fans of Rey's for the past 10 years. We even supported them strongly through Covid, and tend to have all of our birthdays and anniversary meals there...even though it's a long drive from our home in Wake Forest. We decided to do something a little different his year for Thanksgiving...not cook. SO we ordered Rey's Thanksgiving takeout. We had done this in 2020 and experienced wonderful food and plenty of it...we had two full meals from the food they gave us. I placed the order about three weeks ago, and arranged a noon pickup. I was the first person to arrive for pickup at 11.50am...and I checked in at the front desk and was immediately asked to stand aside so they could check diners in. I get this...it was lunchtime on Thanksgiving and they were super busy. What was not cool was the fact that they made me feel like a second-class citizen. I was told they were just finishing up the packaging and that the food would be out shortly. About 10 minutes after I arrived another gentleman arrived for a pickup order. He checked in and waited beside me. At 12.15pm they brought out his order and he went on his way. I queried when my order would be ready and why his was brought out before mine...especially given that I had arrived 10 minutes before him. They had no answer for this. They brought my food out at 12.20pm...a full 30 minutes after I had arrived, and a full 20 minutes after my pre-arranged pickup time. When I got home, we got everything warmed up and started plating the meal. Although the appetizer, main course sides, and desserts were great, the Thanksgiving meal only came with one small slice of ham and an even smaller slice of turkey. I was shocked at this, and was even more shocked to find the ham was similar to a store-bought ham that I could have gotten for peanuts at Walmart. How can you server people one small piece of ham and turkey on Thanksgiving!!! If this is Rey's' way of dealing with the inflation problem, then they should advertise this...so we can make an informed decision about buying from them. To be fair, everything else about the meal was great...the mashed potatoes, the creamed corn, the green beans, the salad, soups, and deserts. I've been a big advocate and fan of Rey's for a long time, and feel disappointed in my experience this time around...and to be honest a little cheated. I guess we will not be making the long drive down to Rey's anymore!
A great place for a special occasion or just a great meal.
We chose this restaurant for our 42nd anniversary dinner. They have New Orleans inspired cuisine and since we met and were married while living in New Orleans, we thought this would be a great place to go. They also offered flambé desserts which are hard to find and we had always enjoyed Bananas Foster. I casually mentioned it was our anniversary and they prepared a nice presentation with a candle/dessert for take home (we did have the Bananas Foster after all!) and a nice card. The presentation of the flambé Bananas Foster was fantastic. They had frozen the ice cream and bowls so when the hot dessert was poured in, the ice cream did not melt quickly. A very nice touch you don't see that often. We had not experienced this type of service and occasion presentation since dining at Tommy Toys in San Francisco. The service team was well organized and focused on ensuring that we had a great meal while recognizing the special occasion. The food was great but the total experience was what made it worth it. All in for the two of us of a little over $200 but a good meal could be enjoyed for less. We would highly recommend Rey's for any special occasion. We plan on going back with friends visiting after telling them about our experience.
