Really bad management.
So overbooked for Valentine's Day. We had a 6 PM reservation and waited 30 minutes until our waiter came to get our drink order, and ended up having to take our desserts to go after more than two and half hours of sitting at the table. They were clearly overbooked with not enough staff as so many tables were complaining of the slow service. Our waiter kept saying "it's just me here and the kitchen is short staffed" Then don't book that many tables, choose quality over money! At 8:15 over two hours since we arrived, we still had not gotten the dessert course, included in the pre-fix valentine's day three- course menu, so we had to take them to go as our babysitter time was almost up. When we left no less than 20 people were waiting in the small lobby area for their tables. This is clearly very very poor management. The food was fine, but it doesn't matter if the overall experience was so horrible. We then waited 15 minutes in the cold for the valet to get our car. We will never ever go back here after such a horrible experience. This business is clearly focused on making money above all else, with the quality of the experience is of no importance. We are longtime local customers and they've lost our business, and by the comments from the other tables, they've lost a lot of other business too. MANY other restaurants in Bernardsville and neighboring areas value their customers and care about their experience, for a lot less money. Go there, don't spend your money here.

I strongly encourage the owners to take a good hard look at your wait staff and ask yourself if you would be happy if you were patron at your restaurant. Our waiter was inattentive, brash, and judgmental. From the moment we were seated, he made us feel like he wanted nothing to do with us. He didn't introduce himself, he didn't give us the specials, and he seemed annoyed the entire time. In hindsight, he probably didn't tell us his name so that he could remain anonymous when people write reviews talking about a disgruntled waiter. We only interacted with this man three times over the course of our whole meal (which lasted 2 hours because he ignored us for the latter half and we couldn't find him to get the check). He seemed upset that we didn't order alcoholic drinks all around the table and decided from that point that he wouldn't waste his time on us. I caught him watching us in the mirror near our table a handful of times and chatting with the other older waiters while the younger busboys scurried around doing their jobs for them. My mom was so excited to try this place for her birthday and had heard great things from her friends. The food was pretty good, but no better than other Italian restaurants I've been to in the tri-state area. We will not be coming here again. There are so many great Italian restaurants in New Jersey with great food and great service for a reasonable price - this is not one of them.
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite Italian restaurant in NJ.
I love the dining room, the food, the service. I never feel rushed and it is the best dining experience!

This place is beautiful and chic ! I find eating by the bar is more fun whereas main dinning area is more serious and stiff . I find eating just a pasta dish is fantastic there . Sometimes the main dishes could be a hit or miss .

My family is very seasoned when it comes to fine dining and this place is the real deal, especially coming from an Italian family. Best restaurant in NJ in our opinion. Will be back!
Be the first to ReplyThe food was okay, but the Maitre D was very rude.
Ambiance was pretty, I am guessing that is what you are paying for. BTW I have never written a review before but the Maitre D's behavior was quite unusual.

Such a charming, inviting, warm and wonderful place! I found the staff to be friendly and agreeable, except when you question them. First, and most important.... the food was amazing. I was with a small group of six women who only ordered entrees, no appys, no salads, no desserts. I can never understand why someone would want to dine at a place like this and then order only one thing. It was kind of embarassing. Sad to go to a place like this and be frugal in what one orders. Perhaps the staff was annoyed with our group because they were so frugal. We were asked if we would like sparkling water and two of us said yes. A bottle was opened, but was never left on our table. I had one glass, another friend had two. We were charged 23.50 for TWO bottles of water. (A glass of soda is 4.00). They should have left the open bottle on our table, and not charged us for two bottles. When I questioned them, they seemed short with us. The server indicated that there are only two glasses of water per bottle, which is not at all true, since a smaller bottle of wine has four glasses. That was deception #1. So, on our table there was only one appy, and one salad split two ways. We each had an entree, and all looked and tasted amazing. The preparation and presentation was fabulous, and the platter of breads, focaccia, and breadsticks was overflowing and delicious. I was kind of embarassed that one of our guests ordered that bread dish to be filled THREE times when the first one was already overflowing. Needless to say she piled much of it high onto her bread dish, in order to take some home as well. My scallops entree were a special and I thought it interesting that they did not specify that they were small BAY scallops, but delicious nonetheless. This should have been indicated. Deception #2. Then, the bill came. It was about $50 more than the sum of what we ordered. It is my contention that there was an extra entree on the handwritten bill that went unnoticed. Deception #3. I left after dinner and had to walk outside in the wind and rain uphill and around the block to get to their valet, where there was no protected area to await my car. When you arrive at this restaurant, the valet signs are clear and you trust them but they take you away from all street and free lot parking and directly to their valet, as though you have no choice. When you get out, you find that there's no way into the building unless you walk down the hill and around the corner. Deception #4. I'm going to try this place again knowing what I have learned... but I'll park in the FREE lot right directly across the street from their front door, will ask for my bottle of water to be placed ON my table, and I will scrutinize their handwritten checks for errors! And hopefully, I'll be with a group of women who are there to taste the amazing appys, salads, entrees, and desserts. I'm a cook and a foodie and I couldn't even get these cheapos to split an appy or dessert. And no coffees. Geez, why go out??

-This review is for the Ristorante section only and not the Trattoria I was skeptical going into Ristorante MV based off the Yelp reviews, but the food here definitely blew me away! I came here to celebrate my anniversary and did a quick reservation online as a just in case. Boy am I glad I did because this place was POPPIN' for a Wednesday. It looked like if you came in without a reservation, you would have to wait and grab a drink in the bar/Trattoria section. They present you a bread platter to start and I have to agree with another review- only eat the bread with the marinara sauce. I repeat, only eat the bread with the marinara sauce! It was sooo dang good. The dipping oil that comes with the other bread is very good, but don't fill up on the bread! We ordered the Parma Antipasti and it was surprisingly tasty! The blend of prosciutto, orange, and Parmesan cheese balanced each other perfectly. The prosciutto was actually less salty than I expected but I liked that. Now on to the entrees. Remember when I said don't fill up on the bread? It's because the portions are huge!! We ordered off the special menu and I can't remember the exact names, but got the tortellini and nero. The tortellini was bathed in a beautiful, rich creamy sauce. It also had peas and some type of meat (maybe pancetta?). The amount of tortellini they gave was plenty! I got the nero which had huge scallops and large shrimp with squid ink pasta in a tomato sauce. I will admit I thought this dish wasn't flavorful at first, but you have to mix the pasta and shrimp around in the sauce. I legit can't get over how large the scallops were. We didn't order dessert because we were stuffed but the dessert menu is extensive. As of this review date, all desserts are $15 per each item. Even though this restaurant is on the pricey end, the quality of the food and the portion sizes definitely justify the cost. I would say this is for sure a place you go to celebrate a special occasion. Two negatives though: -This place is sooo loud. My boyfriend and I had to raise our voices a lot so we could hear each other. -If you are seated new the door entrance, there is definitely a draft that comes in through the wall. It gets slightly chilly especially if another party isn't seated next to you.
Be the first to ReplyOut of specials at 7pm on a friday.
Server was rude when I asked to order duck raviolis off the special menu he just replied "no." I asked what he meant and then he said "No we don't have that." Ordered chicken and pork sausage good flavor but chicken overcooked. Drinks were good overall very disappointing.

The menu on their website is different from the menu in the restaurant. The menu in the restaurant has entrees that are about 30-40% more expensive than what's online, so that felt like a bait and switch. My wife and I split an appetizer, each ordered an entree and had two glasses of wine. The waiter was clearly annoyed that we didn't spend more, and he never came during the meal to ask how things were. When we declined to order dessert, he seemed even more annoyed. Food was fine overall. Far too expensive for what it is, and we were really turned off by the waitstaff.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a great restaurant, I can't believe its under 4 stars.
Probably the local rich folks not getting their way. We had a 5 star experience here last night! Mozz and prosciutto app were great, their mozz is amazing! The Carbonara i got with Capellini and was spectacular and my wifes chicken scarpiarello was great too, big portion. Wish I had room to try the minestrone as it looks great. The menu was huge with a full page of specials on a Friday night. Dessert and Negroli was great and they were able to make my prego wife a custom mocktail. Definitely go here for your next special occasion or you just want high quality classic Italian. Service was great and food came out Quick!
Be the first to ReplyFood & service are amazing.
If I could select 6 Stars for this I would. However, Loud music is an odd Choice for a dinner establishment. It's loud enough that we parked in another block and where able to hear it the moment we exited our vehicle and we both started laughing. It's nightclub loud from the exterior. But the problem is that The music isn't additive. It's a negative. Everyone around us at both the bar and again at our table, including the tables on either side of us, complained that the music was too much. You have a great physical presence, fantastic food & drink, just be prepared to kinda sorta yell to your companion for the duration of your meal in order to overcome the euro-lounge music.
Be the first to ReplyThe ambiance of the restaurant is awesome.
We walked in for our reservations to find no one to greet which is fine thinking they are busy. We waited a few minutes and someone finally came. After they seated us it took forever the server to come to our table. A lady was passing so we ask about our server and she's like just looked alittle confused. She counter how many tables she had and then walked away. A few minutes later she came back doesn't say anything and asks has someone to come totable. Thought that was a bit weird. I am guessing they occupied toomany tables for her to handle. I had asked her about the Roman special which included cacio Pepe along with two pasta. Since the other two dishes had meat and I am vegetarian I asked if I can just get three portions of cacio Pepe to which she said she needs to check. I totally understand that but overall she just looked totally confused again. She comes back and says they can't do cacio Pepe by itself since everything is mixed in. On the restaurant IG story they pastas were totally separate pics so don't know how all sauces are mixed together. Really disappointed in the answer we received since we really wanted cacio Pepe. All the rest of the food was mediocre nothing to be like omg it was the best I had. Service can definitely be way better for the price you pay for the meal. I do have to give credit the side helpers who served us the food and helped our server while she was too busy. Will not be going back again. I am attaching the picture of cacio Pepe and other pasta that is included in the Roman table meal. To me they look like three separate dishes.
Be the first to ReplyDecor/vibe is wonderful! So pretty.
The food is amazing. Highlights of the night were the rigatoni carbonara and rigatoni bolognese, shrimp oreganata , & ricotta cheesecake. Drinks were ok. Service was attentive but not as informed about items as they should be. Love the new lights on the table!

Very nice ambiance, good service decent food but pasta fell well short of expectations. Starters and dessert were fantastic! Please, don't call your "carbonara", carbonara. It was a sweet egg cream sauce with bacon bits just a far cry from real carbonara for a $30 price point. Our other pasta the Vongole was ok, just nothing special. Not sure what the fuss is about.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, great service, great portions, great ambience.
No complaints at all! Can't wait to go back.
Be the first to ReplyOne of my favorite restaurants in all NJ and NYC.
Such a beautiful trendy place with the food quality to match!! Classic Italian food with so many daily specials!! Almost Everything is homemade including all the complimentary breads and breadsticks. The bar area is spectacular and many people dine at the bar and bar tables. (Old school. No TV's)Follow them on Instagram to see their daily stories showing how they make so much homemade and the beautiful presentation. It's not overly expensive and they have free valet parking. Go!!! You won't regret it!!!
Be the first to ReplyWent for dinner recently.
Highly recommend. The specials menu might have been bigger than the regular menu! The mozzarella in carozza was light but almost tasted like a bite of fried butter (in a good way!) The eggplant parm was unique - a round almost pot pie looking thing (check out the photo) but so so good. The ravioli were like little pancakes stuffed with cheese. The chicken Francese was good - light and gourmet - chicken in a light buttery sauce (honestly it was a little too buttery for some of us but the Francese connoisseur among us loved it). The side of broccoli was made with the perfect amount of garlic and olive oil. We ordered penne alla vodka off the menu (when the teenage girl wants it, they make it!) and it got good reviews. We usually like pasta on the side of our Francese and parm but they don't provide that. We ordered an entire entree of pasta alla marinara to share (waitress talked us out of getting a half portion for $19 for the whole $26 portion, which is good because it wasn't huge). So simple but so good - perfect tomato to pasta to spice ratio. Service was great - the water glasses never got more than half empty, the plates were removed promptly and they brought more of the delicious bread for us. Overall, delicious meal. Definitely a step up from most Italian restaurants. Nice building. A little crowded - not a huge building for so many tables. And it was expensive, so probably not a weekly dinner, but it was a great dinner.
Be the first to ReplyMy family and I have been to Ristorante MV a couple times
My family and I have been to Ristorante MV a couple times and have generally had an exceptional dining experience. This time around, however, there was one issue in particular that tainted the entire endeavor that will almost certainly keep me away from the establishment for good. I will elaborate below. My latest dining experience took place on Valentine's Day, which included a fixed holiday-specific menu - meaning that it was a 3-course meal with an appetizer, an entrรฉe, and a desert.item. Myself and the party with whom I attended, as usual, enjoyed everything we ordered and were pleased. The appetizers ordered were an escarole salad, a clam oreganata, and a fried mozzarella dish, all of which were good. For entrรฉes, I ordered salmon which was well-cooked and nicely seasoned; the steamed vegetables on the side, to the contrary, were something that I would expect as a side for salmon at a diner, not at an upscale dining establishment. That was a disappointment because it was below their obviously high standards. My other acquaintances ordered a seafood risotto and fettuccine with a truffle cream sauce, all of which tasted great in their opinion. For desert, I ordered the chocolate tartufo which was delicious and had some obviously homemade vanilla gelato; my other acquaintances ordered a ricotta cheesecake and a tiramisu, all of which were exceptional - so within expectations. It is obvious that MV cares a great deal about the quality of their food and it shows in their execution and output: you can notice the quality differential between MV's food and average Italian cuisine. It's almost hardly a comparison.Along with the experience, we were lucky to have a live vocal performance from someone that sounded remarkably like Frank Sinatra, which was a huge plus to the experience.So...why 1 star? The price: among my PARTY OF THREE, the bill amounted to $650...I am NOT joking. This is an absurd price point - even for an upscale place like MV. The meal, as good as it was, was not even remotely justified for the price we had to pay. After burning through a great deal of cash, I recalculated what my order would have amounted to outside of Valentine's Day dining. It would have been around $70-75. What in the world justifies a 100% price increase for the same food? You may be asking: why did you bother coming if it was well beyond your dining budget? Simple: the restaurant didn't even bother disclosing the price of the 3-course meal. We didn't even know it was a special $150/person three-course fixed menu until we walked in and were handed the menus. It was not disclosed on their website; it was not disclosed on OpenTable - the site you use to make reservations; it was not disclosed on the reservation confirmation email. I don't know if this was deliberate (hell, I don't even know if it is legal), but if it was, then this is a disgraceful practice in which to engage. For obvious reasons, it would have been outright silly to sit down, get the menu, read the price, then get up and leave the place when we went through the trouble to make the reservation, let alone waste the lengthy drive and preparation to dress the part. My party honestly considered leaving after being in the establishment for only five minutes. For a restaurant that already served pricy food, this is a serious problem. Again, I've been to MV twice prior to this - I was expecting to spend a fair bit of money, but NOT $650.For a restaurant like MV to forget this detail is deplorable and deceptive to consumers - a grotesque practice if not disclosing the price until arrival was intentional. The owner might as well have pickpocketed me after I ate, and then booted me out of the place in the same way you would see in children's cartoons.Nothing about the experience justified raising the price by 2.0-2.5 times what is normally sold, not even on a holiday. I'm not going to be deceived in an act of what felt like highway robbery, which is why I am NEVER going back to this establishment. I am thoroughly disappointed, and will certainly be sharing my experience to those I know who have also dined at this establishment. It has also come to my knowledge that this was a practice done last Valentine's Day - charging way too much and not disclosing it. I am yet to find a reason why management finds it necessary to leave this out.
