Soothing visit. Stellar food.
Delicious sushi and appetizers prepared with care and an eye to detail. Warm, helpful, and genuine waitstaff. Small and welcoming. Will be back.

There are two halves to this restaurant: the reservation only prix-fixe Omikase and the casual no-reservation izakaya which is casual Japanese pub food in the front. I’m reviewing the izakaya… a big menu of dozens of sakes, cocktails, tapas style dishes and sushi. Order slowly and enjoy the evening. The tapas dishes (our focus) were fantastic - diverse, decent price, delicious. 2-3 dishes per person is enough. The seaweed salad was earthy and deep, the shrimp Shumai are unlike your neighborhood dum sum - they are large and layered, the wings are good and filling but not my favorite, the makeral was the standout of the night and is a must order. The sakes are huge pours and fun to try a couple - they can get pricey but we tried several good ones at $11. The service was super attentive and helpful. So many more things I want to try - we’ll be back often…

We ordered takeout and it was delicious. My favorites were the chashu bun with pork, cucumber and mayo, so fresh and flavorful. Gyoza was delicious, we loved the yellowtail with avocado, bloc party and shrimp tempura with avocado. All the dippings sauces were fabulous. We had the chicken wings and should have reheated them once we got home... fabulous customer service, cute location. Next time we may sit outside.

My Philly have friends have told me about this place and I was finally able to stop by recently for a take out order. We ordered the fresh uni platter from Maine, miso black cod and the Chirashi. Everything was fresh and the online ordering system was seamless. The Chirashi had toro, fresh uni, salmon roe and tuna. Price wise its a bit high, but I would pay for it as the quality is amazing. Great umami flavors and even the soy sauce was very rich in flavor. The uni comes packages with pre rolled sushi rice and seaweed. One of the staff members mentioned that they get shipments multiple times a week and this uni was definitely fresh. The miso cod was delicious and must order as well.
I do recommend ordering way in advance if you want the popular items like uni and the Royal Chirashi. I've seen in the past they have sold out quickly. With current Covid conditions they offer take out only. Best to order in advance, park on one of the side streets and check in with the cashier. Ill definitely be back to try their izakaya dishes and try to get my hands on the Royal Chirashi
What a wonderful experience
We were lucky to get a seat at 6pm on a Thursday. The food server was knowledgeable and gave detailed recommendations. We had a little of everything. The bacon, steak and bacon scallops skewers were fantastic. The soup we had had so many flavors. All of the sushi we ate was fresh and delicious. We'll be back!

Went here while on business trip with colleagues. This place was real deal. Had great waitress that gave us amazing recommendations. Miso black cod was fabulous. Chicken heart skewers we’re tasty as was Dragon roll. And their selections of sake were perfect to choose from as well.
More like a bar vs a niche sushi place
I walked to this restaurant from my hotel. It's basically located in a neighborhood and then POOF, there's a sushi place. It looks like this street is attempting to become trendy with places to eat etc. But, for the most, it's a neighborhood, nothing exciting. If they did not have a Japanese lantern hanging outside, you'd miss it. I think there are 2 sides to this place - but the website is confusing. For what it's worth, I was at the "bar side." I sat at the bar and my first impression was this place seems like a dive-y dark pub. I wasn't turned off by that, i was just taken by surprise. The menu is pretty vast. To be honest, I was surprised by the price point considering the locale and the decor. I was assuming it's because everyone says it's the best in town. But, sheesh, you'd think it was 5 Star. But, I digress. I was recommended the fries and the shishito peppers. Both were cooked to perfection. So, no regrets. The salmon sashimi was lovely and fresh, albeit very small. I have had bigger portions at nicer restaurants for the same pricing. The bartender was super friendly and the food was cooked VERY quickly. For that, they get 4 stars. I am sure there are other places to have sushi in Philly. But, this was fine for what it's worth. The locals love this place and I am sure they keep it in business.

This place is like no other Japanese restaurant I’ve ever been. The interior is very dark and loud, just like a bar. There is a Manga projected on a wall. The service was fast. We had some sake and a few bites. The gyoza was different than the typical but tasty. I liked the nasu dengaku very much. The sashimi was a very small portion. All by all a special experience.

Be the first to ReplyThis is the only place in town I know that serves Izakaya type fare.
First let me remind you, there are two different parts to this. The sushi bar is omakase only and practically impossibly to get a seat/reservation. So this time I want to describe the front area, which is the Izakaya – i.e. Japanese pub. This is the only place in town I know that serves Izakaya type fare, AKA Japanese home cooking or Japanese comfort food. Things like kinpira gobo, skewers of meats and veggies, fried tofu, spicy cod eggs, etc. along with some sashimi options. They have an extensive drink menu with many sake choices and also sochus, beers and other alcohols. Somewhat surprisingly their sake prices are higher and often even double the prices of high-end Japanese restaurants in NYC where I just spent a week exploring them every night. Service is good and food comes out at a slow pace, so you can enjoy conversation and what you have. It is a small place, so they won’t seat parties until everyone has arrived. Usually four or 5 people are crowded around a table make for 2 people, so it can be cramped and uncomfortable. Eating at the bar may be a more comfortable option. Parking is nearly impossible, so driving isn’t a good option.

This place was amazing. The food was absolutely fantastic. We had the Sashimi deluxe and the fish was so fresh. Salmon and yellowtail were the best. Black Cod special was unbelievably good as was the beef tatami. Drinks were so good as well and everyone was so friendly. They mistakenly took our number down wrong and we came back in to a round of drinks on the house along with food. Completely unnecessary but a great touch in service. Will definitely be back again. Great restaurant, great staff, great food, great service.

Nothing around the area comes close to the experience of dining here. Jessie goes out of his way to bring in the absolute best fish to go with the amazing rice he makes. Sure it's expensive, but definitely worth the bucks.... By the time you get done with tax, tip, and alcohol you can easily top $225.00 pp.
