Fine Drinking rather than Fine Dining
A lovely setting with a comfortable, spacious and quiet room.
Food however was average, except for the steamed vegetables side which was excellent. Entrees were small servings with underwhelming natural flavours and were over salted. Mains were solid, but again average considering this is supposed to be a higher end restaurant.
If however you want a large choice in good wines, the 32 page wine list will impress. Prices are reasonable.
Service is good.
Overall, a good experience, but not because of the food.
A very pleasant experience.
We found the food, wine selection and service to be excellent. Costs commensurate with the quality of all three. Not a large menu but one that would provide something for most tastes. Smaller selection usually means better preparation and flavours.
At the completion of our meal, we considered the Duck may have been slightly over salted, (Capers?) but there were none of the usual effects of an over salted meal, ie thirst. The vegetable accompaniments really enhanced the taste of the meat.
The zucchini flowers (entrees) were exceptional.
The most noticeable consideration were the background sounds - or lack of them. The acoustics were amazing. A table conversation could be conducted at normal volumes and everybody hearing. No loud conversations from other tables were discernible. The sound deadening fit out exceptional. All in all a very pleasant evening.
Rubicon Restaurant
The food was good but the duck was too salty and the beef too large. Perhaps the beef could be reduced to 200 gms and reduce the price.. I don't believe in a restaurant like this you should be asked to pay $4.00 for one slice of bread. Service was too efficient. Our waiter was not warm or personal. The restaurant seemed to be driven from the kitchen not the front of house so this misses the chance of personalising the experience for guests.

We had a lovely dinner at Rubicon. Great food in a beautiful atmosphere. The staff were friendly and professional. The Zucchini flowers were excellent and my husband loved the duck fat potatoes!
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
Our experience at Rubicon was quite poor from the outset being seated in an unpleasant corner between the door and the bar. Surely a good restaurant would find a more pleasant use of space. The food was dated and disappointing and the service was lacking all night, we will not be back.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food, great staff, lovely location
We three enjoyed dinner on a Friday night at this hidden gem. Our waiter was attentive and friendly without being intrusive. We each chose different meals so we could sample the flavours and all were lovely. The restaurant is cosy, stylish and relaxed. We'll be back.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing service amazing food
Dined at the Rubicon last night on a whim with my Mum. Sat in the front dining room which was warm, inviting and really lovely. We ordered the rib eye and the duck confit, which were beyond amazing. Portions were large and food incredibly flavoursome, beautifully presented and delicious. We could not pass up dessert so we had the caramelised apple tart, and the chocolate parfait. Also delicious and beautifully presented. We were both blown away by the food and the service was lovely also. We loved the wines recommended by the floor staff, who were attentive and knowledgeable. I cannot recommend the Rubicon highly enough! We are going back on Tuesday night next week, and will make a regular occasion. It was excellent.
Be the first to Replypleasant and enjoyable
I thought this fine dining experience was French and surprised to find it in suburban (Griffith) Canberra on 22nd May, 2021. The fine cuisine is not particularly French, nevertheless the atmosphere and the dining were intimate, whether dining as a couple or with a group of friends. We opened our experience with 2 Entree dishes Kingfish shashimi and Beef tartare. Both dishes were tasty and the flavours subtle. Main course was Duck confit with a side of green beans, snow beans, and desert was chocolate parfait. The duck was well cooked, but the jus lacked flavour. However the side dish of string beans and snow peas had loads of flavour and was thoroughly enjoyable. The chocolate parfait was delicious. Today, the phrase crossing the Rubicon is a metaphor that means to pass a point of no return. Food is about taking you on a journey, this journey was pleasant and enjoyable.

We come here for special occasions. On this trip it was for a significant birthday and we had dinner for 6.
As with all of our previous visits here the service was casual but attentive and the food was fantastic.
I am really looking forward to our next visit.
Simply Disappointing
We attended a late night booking on a quiet Wednesday night and Rubicon simply did not deliver. It took 20 minutes for the waiter to come and take our order and another half hour for our bread to arrive with entrees coming a couple of minutes later. The zucchini flowers were soggy but the beef tartare was nice. Another long wait before the mains was made worse by the fact that we could see 2 chefs having a beer behind the bar while we sat hungry. The wagyu which we requested rare was overdone but the gnocchi dish was nice although a little plain.
The positive for Rubicon is the extensive wine list with a range of delicious bottles though it took our waiter 3 tries to find the right bottle.
Unfortunately, Rubicon has slowly been declining as the rest of Canberra has improved.
