It's one of those days when you wish you could give a place less than one star. Went for Sunday brunch. The service was horrible, the food was cold, the Eggs Benedict had hard boiled eggs, the manager didn't really seem to care, and the waiter sure as hell didn't care. Far too pricey to have terrible service and terrible food. If anyone ever suggests going there again, I will conveniently have other plans.

We would come for Happy Hour at the upstairs bar area. Obsessed with the garlic bread and you could not find a better Pear Martini anywhere!Unfortunately we came for a friends birthday the other night and found out that they no longer had a Happy Hour. (At all) The staff seemed confused when we seated ourselves in the upstairs area (as that was usual in the past). We ordered some appetizers aka the garlic bread, which was one of the main reasons we went, and were completely disappointed when it came out rushed and uncooked. We waited for a long time before we finally had to ask someone if we could order something to drink, which also seemed to confuse the waiter. I ordered the clam chowder, which came out cold as if it was sitting out. We had sat in a corner and by the time the sun went down, we could barely see the table because it was so dark. Look, I can appreciate if maybe it was a busy night or something, but it was a weekday and maybe only one or two other tables had guests. I am not sure if there has been a large change in staff or maybe management....but I do not think I will go back. Sadly.
Be the first to ReplyGreat ambiance, we sat by the window overlooking the dock.
Garlic bread is really good & the sea bass I ordered was perfect. Our server was super sweet & helpful as well. No complaints!

Beautiful restaurant on the water with fantastic, reasonably priced entrees. our waiter, Cody was excellent! We had some dietary issues in our party and he handled very well. We'll be back!
Be the first to ReplyI made reservations and when I arrived I went up to the bar.
We decided to just stay at the bar since our bartender was awesome! The scenery was beautiful and our food was amazing! We ordered the lobster and sea bass. We also tried the garlic bread and calamari. I love this place and will be coming back

Went out for a friends birthday and had a blast! Jeremy was awesome! Attentive, accommodating, quick, just all around great service. The food was delicious and the drinks were on point. Even though the weather wasn't cooperating the views were amazing. Wish the bathrooms were larger but I get it we're on the water so space is limited. Overall I recommend it and I plan to come back and bring my mister.

This is a solid restaurant that's been around for a long time. The location is great on the water, grilled swordfish was very good and the service overall with the server, runners and busboy are on top of everything. The only issue I had was we were seated at the base of staircase and crammed into a space that probably shouldn't have had a table. Overall a solid 4 for food and service.

Today, My Girlfriend Linda, and her Daughter Kristy, and Kristy 9 month daughter visited the Rusty Pelican in Newport Beach, My name is Karen and I have been going to the Rusty Pelican for along time. Today we were celebrating a birthday. Our Waiter's name was Ryan N he was fantastic, he helped us in every way possible, checking up on how we were doing, and helping us with the celebration song Happy Birthday to Kristy, he was funny, kind and caring and professional and engaging in conversation. If you want a place to go, where the food is 20 star, the restaurant has an awesome view of the water. Everyone is nice, If you like seafood, the food is more than awesome. Again thank you Ryan N for giving us an awesome time today. Thank you Karen Herrold

I really don't like to post 1-star reviews, but today was altogether a disappointing experience for me. This is a restaurant that my parents have been frequenting since they were in their early 20s as a young, married couple and they're still happily married now, nearing their 60s. This is a restaurant that my parents have brought me and my husband before we were married, and a restaurant that my parents bring their friends to as well when they want to treat them to a nice dinner by the beach. Today was my mother-in-law's birthday, and my parents wanted to treat my in-laws to a birthday dinner. They made a reservation for 5:30pm, hoping to avoid the peak dinner crowd and also hoping for better seating. Well, we arrived and it didn't seem like they really had a table in mind for us, so my mom requested window seating and then asked for a booth (because that's where she sat last time and thought was comfortable). They immediately accommodated us (all good up to here) and we were seated. The hostess later came to us, apologizing and asking to move us as the table we were seated at had actually been reserved for a larger party. We understood and got up to move. Again, up to here was fine. Our new table was a bit uncomfortable because it was a round table that's supposed to seat 8, so it was a bit awkward for the 6 of us. The table was also very rocky and a couple of the seats were right next to a busy aisle. We requested another seat. We were taken upstairs where we found a table that very obviously only seats 4 people.... that they had attached 2 chairs on the ends of the table to. We commented that the table was way too small. The staff stood there a bit awkwardly at first and began talking amongst themselves to find a solution. Their solution was to grab a round table for 2 and attach it to our rectangular table. I was unsure why they didn't just grab the other rectangular table nearby and connect it to ours.. but my guess is that they wanted to keep that table empty to seat another party of 4 rather than waste 2 empty seats. I tried giving the benefit of the doubt that maybe that table had been reserved, but it remained empty until we finished eating dinner and left. The big kicker was some of the staff's attitude. They scoffed at us behind our backs, being visibly annoyed at us commenting on our tables. My husband caught one of the workers glaring at us while scoffing, and he stopped when my husband turned to look at him. I was initially understanding and even apologetic at all the table changes, but then felt disappointed and upset at their inability to respond to the situation in a professional manner. It's not like we showed up as walk-in guests... We made a reservation beforehand. All of this also happened while the restaurant was not very busy, so I was a bit baffled at their annoyance when part of the table changes was their fault from the get-go.Unfortunately, the food was not very delicious tonight either, possibly due to us being upset with all that had transpired. It was upsetting to see my parents being a bit embarrassed in front of my in-laws, and I privately told my dad that perhaps, it's time for us to look for another ocean-side restaurant instead of returning here. I mean, ocean-side restaurants aren't hard to find in California haha. Each time I've been here, I haven't been happy about how they cram so many tables close to each other and how they seat us, but it was never enough to deter me from returning. But this time around, I definitely don't think I'll be back. And my parents won't be either.

For those that don't want to read my whole review, here is the concise review (but it doesn't entail all I have ti say): Came here before and had a nice experience, wasn't perfect but it was nice. This time around I came here with family + in-laws for dinner and wow what a waste of time and money. No one left happy because of the treatment and lack of service. Plus the food sucked. Better service and food at your local McDonalds I promise. Now for those that want a full understanding of what happened during my experience here you go:I came with a party of six total people, had a reservation, and we were seated almost immediately. We requested a spot with a view because it seemed like it wasn't busy (it really wasn't when we came in) and they sat us at a cramped table meant for 4. After we were seated, the hostess comes to us and tells us that we need to move tables because she sat us at a table they were saving. That would have been perfectly fine if she didn't move us to a table in the middle of all the foot traffic where chairs would keep getting bumped into. So I asked if we could get seated anywhere else and so they move us once again to a table that was SMALLER than the previous one. So what do they do with this square mini table? they add a freaking mini circle table to the end of it and voila you're now just trying to make a stick figure out of tables and chairs. Tired of the nonsense at this point, my party just heads over to this table at the corner with no view and two screwed up tables and while walking I hear one of the employees SCOFFING and glaring at us. Rude. By this point you would think it couldn't be much worse right? Took us about 15 minutes to get our waters from someone who wasn't our server that probably noticed we still had no drinks long after being seated. Took forever for us to put our orders in because guess what? we were seated in the small corner far far away. So now with all this for a restaurant that charges ~$30 a plate, you would hope the food is redeeming. Nahhh absolutely terrible. The shrimp scampi is drenched in water with little taste, the salmon is seasoned so poorly it would have tasted better without any seasoning, the penne pasta was on the other hand so salty it could have used that water from the scampi. If you're a foodie, which you probably are since you're on yelp, DONT come here, such a terrible experience. And this is coming from someone whose reviews are 80% if the time four or five stars. I love supporting restaurants and putting up good reviews, but I am so severely disappointed in this restaurant. I know the ambience is pleasing but there are plenty of other establishments that will treat you with respect that are by the ocean. It sucks that this was a restaurant my family went to for years and they've just been getting worse and worse, cramping up all the space to fit more tables so that you're basically neck to neck with the person behind you. Ridiculous and tbh not safe at all. Service: TERRIBLE I don't even want to give it a number rating but if you want one its -10/5Food: plenty of other restaurants by the sea 0/5Parking: you have to pay for valet $8+tip If you made it to the end of the review congrats and thanks for reading my post lol.. if youre on the fence about whether or not you want to come here do yourself a HUGE favor and please just don't do it. That four star review you see from the past, completely disregard it cus I wouldn't want anyone to run the risk of experiencing what I had to go through.
Be the first to ReplyGreat seafood and Friendly Small Bar.
Restaurant is consistently great. The Princess and I have been here a half dozen times in the last year. Always fresh and well prepared seafood. The Bar Staff knows the menu and recommendations have always been spot on.There is something on the menu for everyone. No happy hour and no bar food are my only complaints.Cocktails are interesting. Wine list is small.Still a great place for dinner

He is friendly and helpful, and came to check on our table several times. . We were luckily sat at a place. We are regulars but he made it extra special today and we are extremely grateful for his kind personalitySuper yummy

Decent location but harbor view is stacked with boats. Not picturesque - sadly. Terrible service. Specials were not shared. Bread was not delivered. Salad came a minute before meal. Chicken piccata was The worst ever - absolutely not taste. Steak was fatty and the served never asked how it should be cooked. Dessert was the dim highlight. Good valet.

Great food, great venue looking at the marina.

Rusty Pelican is perfectly-located on the marina, which offers stunning views at sunset. I came here for a wedding dinner reception, and I really appreciated the service and attentiveness from the waiters who went above and beyond. From refilling our wine glasses to clearing our dishes between each course, they did a stellar job to make the dinner a smooth and enjoyable one.Food itself was just average, though: basically, it's a lot of seafood, but the taste wasn't anything to write home about. I found much of the food (Cajun shrimp, calamari, grilled swordfish) to be on the bland side. Funny enough, the garlic bread stood out: extra-buttery, extra-cheesy, and extra-garlicky. Overall, I wouldn't choose to come to Rusty Pelican on my own, but for special occasions (especially if you reserve outside right on the water), it's worth the experience.

Ended up in the sun on the patio which was even more miserable. Won't be back.
Be the first to ReplyThis place has definitely lost its edge.
The only good thing was the viewI know restaurants are having a tough go, but the service and the food both mediocreOrdered mussels and clams. One could barely see the clTo their credit, they replaced it with something else, but the whole vibe was not good. I would not recommend this to a friend

Came here for lunch when a friend wanted a view of the water and seafood, and had vegetarian options. The only reason that this is not 5 stars is the lack of vegetarian appetizer and entree options. There were a lot of sides and salad vegetarian options, there were not many vegetarian options in the appetizer or entree sections. With that being said, the Brussels sprouts were so amazing, I could have had 3 orders of it! The non vegetarian absolutely loved all the options and said the crab cakes were amazing!

We celebrated my parent's life here after a burial at sea a week ago. We were intimately seated for 12 on the outside patio. All the details in menu planning , parking arrangements, and a small table placed for photos of parents was handled by the extraordinary patient event planner Brandon Yamamoto. Since this luncheon was an important celebration of our parent's life, the many concerns I had were routinely & seamlessly handled. Brandon's attention to all details also, provided us with a fabulous, friendly, waitress, Lucy & service staff. The food was great, the setting memorable, Rusty Pelican's attention to us, in our celebrating , created beautiful memories for our family! sberes

My husband and I had the pleasure of eating here on Friday, July 29th. Yes, the ambiance was inviting; yes, the fish was among the best we've ever had. All true. What really made this memorable was the manager, ERIC FREY. As he was walking through the restaurant, we asked him to take a picture of us, since it was my husband's birthday. He stopped and obliged us, which started a conversation about this company and how much he liked it. Then he sent a birthday dessert to each of us. He is a wonderful representative for the Rusty Pelican !!

Be the first to ReplyGiving 5 stars because we didn't have a bad experience, but
Giving 5 stars because we didn't have a bad experience, but it was a little underwhelming. My boyfriend RAVED about this place so I brought him here for his birthday dinner. All he could talk about was their pomegranate margaritas and cajun shrimp. The margaritas were not that good, a little watery and not much flavor. He said they were way better pre-covid. The shrimp was also not as good as it used to be, to me it lacked flavor and sauce. We both ordered the salmon and shrimp which came with asparagus and a lobster sauce. I really enjoyed that dish, the salmon was perfectly flaky and the sauce was rich and flavorful. I ordered a salad and lobster (or crab I can't remember) potatoes, and they were a 5/10. I think everything was really lacking a lot of flavor. We got seated outside on their patio next to the water. If you are looking for a nice view, I would make sure you ask to sit outside. Be careful the birds don't try to steal your dinner :) Other then that, there is no complaints. Our server was really nice and always checked up on us to make sure we had everything we needed. There is only valet parking, so be sure to bring extra cash to pay and tip the valet!
