We came here expecting a Michelin experience and left
We came here expecting a Michelin experience and left slightly disappointed. There was nothing wrong with the food, it just didn't wow us or was very memorable. Portions are more sharing size so not a ton for the value but they do have a large selection of wines. Although, be prepared to order a bottle as they have a small(er) selection of wines by the glass. The highlights of the meal were the sea bream sashimi and mushroom dishes but I believe their menu is seasonal so no guarantee they will have it.

This restaurant was highly recommended by one of our guides on a canal tour. Amazing food! Get ready to dress nicer than casual and cheers to a glass of wine!

What a great restaurant! Location is by the canal, walking their is a start of experience. Going into what i thought is a German-fusion cuisine, I was expecting a lot of sausages and potato pancakes but to my absolute and very pleasant surprise I found one of the most unique menus I have seen in Amsterdam and well beyond. A high-ceiling interior looked very appealing and crowd was very alive and (not too) loud. If you want a fun dining experience in Amsterdam, definitely add this spot to your A-list!

We dine at Rijsel regularly when in Amsterdam and wanted to try Pieter's new restaurant out. It was an excellent dining experience. We started with a drink by the canal before moving to the dining room for dinner. I had the seafood starter followed by the friend cauliflower. Both were excellent and highly recommended. For the main entree, I had the chicken and it was wonderful. Our server brought us several wines to taste before choosing the right one for our pairings. We had a wonderful evening. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable and fun. I loved that all the servers attended to the tables equally. Their knowledge of the menu and the wines as impressive and helpful. I strongly recommend this to any foodies out there. The walk is a short and beautiful walk along the canal from Amsterdam Central.

My husband found this restaurant off the beaten path our first night in Amsterdam. This seemed to be a very local restaurant based on the clientele. The bread you are served is made on premises and they refill it for the entire meal The menu has 5 sections for you to choose from: 1. Raw: Seafood Platter - Fresh and local 2. Vegetables: Broccoli with toasted breadcrumbs (made with the crust of the bread you are given) 3. Fish/Meat: Schnitzel 4. Cheese: Cow & Goat 5. Dessert: Grapefruit sorbet The entire meal took about 2.5 hours as they allow you time to linger and chat instead of rushing you out. A lovely dinner to introduce us to Amsterdam!

Located on the canal front this is a place that is away from the city center and can be hard to find. It's one of those places that local go to be seen and it does have a bit of overhype around it. Having said that the food is pretty good but overpriced for what you get. They have something totally unusual here and that is, an exclusively German wine list. It's a seafood and grill restaurant with a warehouse style interior and a huge open kitchen. It has searing for a good 100 people so it is a bit noisy due to the high ceilings. The menu has many starters and mains and they have daily specials for fish and grilled meats which are mostly for sharing between 2-4 people. I had a pickled mackerel to start and it was presented beautifully and tasted ok. It was missing the saltiness one would expect with this dish and also not a great flavour. The fish was very good quality. For second course I had artichoke which was also ok. For main we chose a roasted leg of lamb to share and it was nice tender meat but once again lacking a bit of wow factor. Dessert was nothing to write home about :-) Service was a bit slow and the place was busy so it was hard to get the attention of staff. We did have very friendly waiters and were quick to respond when asked. The wine list was good with some great German white and red wines on the list and prices were ok. I enjoyed the evening with my colleagues but this place did not create enough of an impression for me to rush back.

This is worth, really worth finding on the campus of the Naval Training Base in Amsterdam; Google has the wrong site for this so make sure you go to their website and follow the driving instructions (or walking). We had great food; be adventurous and the wine list is something you never see in American places (or wine shops) since many of the wines are small labels that never make it to our shores. They do group cooking and it looked delicious (we were too small a group). Next to us a group had a whole roasted leg of lamb and big plates of local vegetables. Reservations are very difficult; we got thru late afternoon on a work day so keep trying. Nearly everyone there was from the local area. We had two disabled people and they did allow us to drive in with arrangements but otherwise it is not a long stroll and you walk next to a beautiful harbor overlooking NEMO and many ships. Ignore the negative reviews; the portions were just fine (enough to share tastes) and 4 of us had a multiple courses (3) plus 2 wines for ~300 euros; a meal which would of cost us $500 or more in NYC. Our dessert was simple and perfect; fresh fruit tart with whipped berry creme fraiche. They arranged for a taxi for disabled to get us home. Service was spot on; not fuzzy but sharp and focused. We loved the difference from home!
Be the first to ReplyModern German cooking on Kattenburg, the Dutch naval.
base island. Getting here was complicated as the naval base doesn't allow cars to drive up through to the restaurant, and it wasn't signposted. After a short wander through some seemingly empty but well kept buildings, and lots of tweeting birds (fantastic oasis a stones throw from Amsterdams centre), we finally arrived and were greeted with a very warm handshake. We were told that guests usually arrive on a bicycle and take the Commandantburg footbridge that links Kattenburg with the main landmass of Amsterdam's Eastern Docklands. As we later discovered this place was full of locals and off the tourist map. We were immediately served some light sourdough bread and some crisp lightly pickled and flavoursome vegetables, as an amuse. This set the tone and standard of the menu to come, with an emphasis on flavour, light and modern. The menu is 5 courses, built up so that you can pick from 5 choices in each category. I had 3 courses and left feeling comfortably full. The restaurant sits right by the water, with fantastic views and inside is in a long high ceiling, former canteen that was originally built as a ammunition storage. The decor is simple, warm, modern and light.( I counted 60 ceiling lamps -great use of time while waiting for my dining mate to get through his 5 courses. The unique element here is the fully open (floor to ceiling) open kitchen. The waiting staff are knowledgeable, helpful and seem to like their jobs, and the 5 page German only wine list! Overall a warm recommendation to venture out to Kattenburg island and experience some modern German (read nordic/ Northern European) cuisine pared with some sublime German wines in a very special setting.
Be the first to ReplyGerman faire with a twist.
I have been to Germany many times and got to experience the traditional German food. This place was a nice fusion German experience. Great staff they catered to all of our needs. The shelf fresh came straight from the sea, very fresh and good. Loved all the dishes and wines. To make it even more attractive good prices for the quantity and quality of the food and wine. And yes Yelpers I read the negative reviews, for me it was a 5 stars.
Be the first to ReplyWhat do I know about German fare? Next to nothing.
That said, this felt much more delicate that the German food I've been exposed to. My American-ass could barely tell what I was eating half of the time, but I don't think I was alone. I like the atmosphere, but the food was complicated, expensive, and a little too uniquely paired. I think if they dialed back the menu a little bit, the atmosphere will bring them the rest of the way towards being great.
