杦-SEN- Kyoto Reviews from The Last Year
100000 stars
I wish i could give this place 100 stars. The gyoza dough is out of this world and the ramen pork is crispy with the perfect taste. Broth and noodles are some of the best I’ve had in Japan. AND the service is sooooo lovely. Mostly ran by women too (that i could see). A bit of a wait but so worth it!!!!
Extremely tasty!
I went to the restaurant after reading some reviews on TripAdvisor. When we got there, we saw that it was a very small restaurant and there were already a few people waiting. We put our names on the list that is right at the entrance of the restaurant. It was quite cold and waiting outside was not very pleasant but it passed quickly. As soon as we entered, we placed our order (the menu is at the entrance so when you wait you can think about which dish to order) we ordered two pork ramens and a portion of gyozas. When we tried the broth, we realized it was worth the wait. It was very tasty and the meat, beyond words… extremely tender and super well seasoned. The gyozas in the same way. We loved it so much that we came back again. I highly recommend it!
Amazing Ramen in the heart of Kyoto
This restaurant is one of our family’s favorite. First time we visited there was in 2019 and we highly recommend it. The food is authentic, tasty and best of all the atmosphere is great! Must come early because the place is small.
OVERRATED AND HYPED. rude staff. Should be closed and i think its not sanitary. Area is so small. Service of food slow
Over rated. Hyped. Bad service, rude staff. Place needs renovation. Not recommended! Waiting area outside is so small and without roof.
Delicious, worth the wait
Delicious. The broth was very tasty, but the real standout part of the ramen were the pork slices, which were perfectly cooked and exceptionally flavourful. Gyoza was also excellent. We both left very full and satisfied. In order to get in, you add your name to a list at the door. The restaurant only sits about 15 people, so the list can be a bit slow moving. I would recommend adding your name 2-3 hours before you want to eat. There is lots to see in the surrounding area, so go walk around and check back every once in a while to gauge how close you are to getting in. Waitlist closes a bit before 9pm, at which time the owner notes who’s waiting at the door and those people will be the last bunch to get in- if you aren’t there at 9, you are removed from the list. While a bit of a wait, we felt it was well worth it. One thing to note - you may have a hard time if you are part of a larger group (there is signage noting that groups of 3 or more may be separated). They only have one table that seats 4, so if your are wanting to keep your group together it may be a longer wait. There is also bar seating, which can fit more people, but it’s dependant on how many seats become available in a row.
Great local cuisine.
Absolutely delicious food. Great service. Well worth the small queue. Plus you can have a beer while you wait!! Will be back here.
Ramen is popular in the Nishiki market area
We chose Sen no Kaze ramen (thousand wind ramen) for a ramen dinner in Kyoto. This ramen is quite popular among tourists to Kyoto. The location is slightly outside Nishiki market, just walking distance. The first time we came, this restaurant was closed so we came again 2 days later. The queue was quite long and we had to wait quite a long time to eat. We probably waited more than an hour. When we arrive we have to write the names in the book and the number of people. When it is our turn, our names will be called. Casual restaurant atmosphere. We sat at the counter facing the kitchen and could see the two female chefs in action making ramen to order while enjoying jazz music. Friendly service, but there are very few staff so it takes a while. His English is passable. The ramen portions are quite large, with large ramen bowls. The taste of the soup is quite good and the chasiu and eggs for the ramen are quite delicious. There were several choices for the sauce, but we didn't really understand them, so we just chose what looked interesting on the menu. Prices according to its class, on par with other famous ramen restaurants in Japan. The prices are slightly above the average for ramen restaurants, probably because it's popular. If you want to queue for a long time and really want to eat popular ramen, you can try it, if not, there are still many other ramen restaurants.
Good but too much waiting
Good ramen, excellent chachu but not worth the 2 hour queue, a priori whatever the time of day
Worth The Wait
The only downside is the long waiting time, but it’s actually worth the wait. At less than $10 you get to savor honest to goodness ramen paired with gyoza. No frills, but lots of thrills on your tastebuds!
Good but with a huge queue of tourists
We came to this place because of the positive reviews, we waited in line for an hour. The ramen is good but not worth the wait, better to look for something a little less touristy nearby.
