Settler Salem Reviews from The Last Year
A favorite gem on the north shore.
The dishes are creative and amazing. They make whipped ricotta and baba ganoush starters that melt in your mouth. The main dishes are also excellent with good portions. Wait staff is warm and attentive. It's a small restaurant so limited seating but very charming so it was worth our wait! We will return!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at The Settler, and it was an outstanding experience from start to finish. The Mediterranean food was incredible, bursting with bold flavors that truly reflected the season. The Yellowfin Tuna was cooked to perfection, and the Mazz platter was a delightful assortment of tastes and textures that left me wanting more. The service was impeccable, making the evening even more enjoyable. Highly recommend this gem for anyone seeking a memorable dining experience!

This place was unbelievable! My husband and I came here and had a wonderful experience. We got there early to grab a drink at the bar and everyone who worked there was extremely accommodating. The bartender Ross was extremely friendly and kind. He made amazing cocktails, that were very well balanced. Everything we ate was delicious and we both said it was the best meal we had in years! The outdoor area is very pretty as well, where you are across from some beautiful architecture! Pricey but worth it to have an amazing meal!
Amazing place and I can't wait to go back.
Intimate, beautifully and thoughtfully decorated, carefully curated bar, creative and well plated dishes, and great service. Really a special experience! Did I mention delicious? Went there on April 26th after visiting the Peabody Essex museum. No resv, but read that they don't reserve seats at the bar. So we went right when they opened and sat at the bar which we often prefer. The place fills up quickly! Highly recommend--it is very rare that I give 5 stars!
Very good food but disappointing experience
I booked a reservation on Resy at this very popular restaurant a month in advance of my birthday. We arrived 15 minutes early and our table wasn’t ready, which was fine, but there was no space at the bar and the server firmly advised us we could not wait in the tiny entry. We were brought outside to a bench under a tiny awning to wait in the rain and given a cocktail menu and a promise to be back in a minute to take a drink order. 20 minutes later, my husband went back in to see if they had forgotten us. The table still wasn’t available but we were offered another table next to the door that had been available the whole time but was a bit cramped and crowded. We happily accepted but by now more diners had arrived and also didn’t want to wait in the rain so it was very crowded there. In addition, the bench we had to sit on was sloped forward and very low. The restaurant did clear out at one point but we were never offered the opportunity to change tables. At one point, my husband received a text from the restaurant reminding him of an 8:00 reservation he made for the same night but had cancelled when he learned of my previous booking. Knowing tables are hard to come by, he tried to signal the host, who was standing right there, to let him know. The host gave him an exasperated look, a terse “I’ll be right with you”, then ignored us. Fortunately, our dedicated server, Jack, was pleasant and enthusiastic and advised us there was no double booking. He gave a detailed description of the specials, one of which we ordered but were later advised that they had run out. We also noticed new arrivals being offered a tasting cup as a welcome but we were never offered one. At the end of the evening, my husband asked to take home some of his meal and the server took it to be boxed up. We had an excellent dessert and then we were halfway to our car before we realized she never brought his doggie bag back. I will say that what we ate was tasty and fresh but did not compensate for a very disappointing birthday experience and the inexplicable rudeness of the host. No plans to go back.

get ready for a "kitchen appreciation fee" charged to your bill, like it or not. very bare bones establishment. looks like they spent $500 to put the whole place together. tablecloths would have made a huge difference particularly given the high prices you charge. the whole experience is set up to put money into the owner's pocket. Wines are $17 to $20 per glass. that's offensive to me given that you paid $6 to $8 for the bottles. i watched the cook wipe out a pan with a towel and cook the next meal without washing the pan first. this is a no go. service here is excellent and the wait staff has been trained well. the portions are small but the food is good and well prepared. i enjoyed my pasta and thought it was quite creative. my guess is that this is not the owner's first restaurant. i don't begrudge you trying to make a buck but this felt like a land grab.
Hands down the best restaurant in Salem.
The real deal. Is it a little pretentious? Yes. Is that part of what makes it entertaining? Yes. Worth every penny.
I can't speak to the food but the service was awful.
I was seated at the bar and it wasn't that busy. After waiting patiently for over 15 minutes for the bartender to acknowledge me, I walked out and I will not return.
Food was a 4-5, service was not good.
We were told we needed to order everything at once and were reassured that they'd space out courses. We had just started our bread when our starter arrived and then our dinners came quickly after we finished that. Waiter and place had an affect to them that was off putting. Also, very disappointing to spend hundreds of dollars for 2 people and be done in an hour. Food was great, but I won't be back soon.
By far, best restaurant in Salem.
Great staff and food. Friendly, neighborhood atmosphere.

I would give this restaurant even more than 5 stars if I could - not only was everything delicious - food and wine - but the service was like being with friends who really wanted you to have a great dinner. We enjoyed every course - steak tartare, endive salad, burrito, scallops, pasta, chicken and two yummy desserts. I can't wait to come back!
Not... Great.
What more could I have expected from a space really leaning into a 21st century twist on settler-colonial branding on Naumkeag land... So ok let's talk about the food... A few menu attempts at glamour: Beef tartare? I have so many questions... why was it crumbly ? where did the flavor run to (I don't blame it, I would too if I saw the name of the locale I'd be served at) ? The octopus... no flavor story, and the acid may have been there, yet somehow still fell flat with every bite. Of course, the oysters were the star of the show, although only Mother Nature and the gorgeous human responsible for shucking those fresh New England oysters get a 'hats off' from me for their presence on the menu. Everything else is forgettable but also tasted stolen and poorly replicated. Nothing tops off the cake, though, like the manager who, had he been left to his own devices, would have charged us a fee + interest for entry the way he made sure to remind everyone in my party repeatedly, and point-blank, how much we needed to spend that night in order to deserve our seating. ***A HUGE shout-out to the servers - so please tip them generously if you do venture here, and remember to fight to abolish the sub-minimum wage.*** Not wheelchair accessible. I would not bring my kids. I would not bring my friends. Maybe a good foe recommendation, especially if their pet peeve is fighting for a parking spot.
Best on the North Shore
For high-end dining north of Boston, we haven't come across anywhere that's even in the same class as Settler. The space is intimate; the vibes have been as thoughtfully crafted as the food that comes out of the open kitchen. Everything on the menu is interesting. It's the kind of place where almost everything includes at least one ingredient you've never heard of, but you can trust anything on the menu anyway. We look forward to having a reason to come back here as soon as we leave. Prices are high, so come mentally prepared and enjoy the experience. Reservations can be hard to get, so plan a couple weeks in advance. We recommend sitting at the bar, if it's available!
Highlight of our trip
Great food and service! This was the best service in town and we ate at over 8 restaurants in the past few days. Each and every dish we had was delicious. Appetizer- We had a lamb meatball dish that was off menu and a shrimp dish. Very tasty. Dinner- We had the pumpkin ricotta agnolotti and the harrisa chicken. We would return for both of these. Each agnolotti pasta was filled like a fat pillow and the chicken was so flavorful. Wine- I had a red wine recommended by our server and it was amazing. Ambiance- It's clean and simple decor highlight the focus on the high quality of the food.

Is this an appointment for a leather appointment at the Hermes Store? And if so, how do they switch the appointment to my name?
