Great middle eastern food
Excellent food - we enjoyed the Tunisian egg salad, Fava dip, frena, citrus salad, grilled merguez kofta, charred cabbage, lamb skewer and the steak skewer. Standouts were the citrus days with Cara cad, blood oranges urfa, chili, mint, olives and honey and the kofta ( lamb and beef meatballs). Very lively atmosphere and reservations are an absolute must. Drinks were forgettable.

Incredible ! Inside is cooler vibes. Outdoor space works though for winter as itโs entirely enclosed and heated. Food is insane. Highlights - Frena bread, broccoli, cauliflower, seasonal squash dish was 100++, white harissa dip. Fries and labneh were skippable. Boys loved the chicken and the lamb balls. Famous tahini froyo dessert is was also skippable.

Wow! This place is an amazing tour of unique and delicious Mediterranean food. The service was impeccable. Kudos to Chef Ayesha and her vision. We were regaled.

I get the draw here. Food is superb! 10 out of 10! The only reason for 4 stars are bc of a few missteps, although corrected, need to be addressed. I made the rez for 2ppl, 8:45pm on a Wednesday, outdoor table bc that's all I was able to get at a reasonable time. It's taken me forever to get a rez bc you can only book 2 weeks out and most times they're already booked out or too late (ie 10pm or later). We got there at 8:40pm and the hostess said they're just waiting for our table to clear out. We waited outside, luckily a cool night, bc it was already too crowded inside. There were a few tables that came after us that were seated inside. I checked on the rez at 9pm and still no luck. The mgr came out at about 9:05pm with a couple, small glasses of bubbly, which was lovely, and she even admitted was taking long. Another host came out (hoping was for us), but approached other people and seated them in the outdoor shed. He then came to us and told us still not ready for an outdoor table. I mentioned that the table he just seated came after us and seated before us. If their rez was at 8:30pm and arrived after we did, then they should have lost their rez & seated after us. He said let me see what I can do and miraculously found a table inside, which was great. The waiter was busy, but friendly and professional. We ordered beet dip, wings, crispy shrimp, roasted cauliflower, fries (to start) and lamb skewers & fish in a cage (mains). He said the beet dip doesn't come with anything (not even pita!) so we should order some bread. He recommended frena. $12 dip with no bread and $10 bread. Ok, fine. When the bread came out we waited for the dip which we had to ask 3 people for the dip which is why we ordered the bread. It finally came and the waiter said he'd take it off the bill since that, too, took too long. The food comes out when ready and in no particular order which is fine, but I mean make it make sense. After the starters, came the lamb. We still were using the small appetizer plates after eating all 4 apps. Then the fish arrived and I asked for new plates. He tried taking the one I was eating off of and I said I'm not finished but would like a new plate for the 2nd entree. He came right away, but waited there until I finished so that he can take the plate which was just weird. Mind you, I had ordered 1 drink, finished it during the app round and it sat at the corner of the table, never taken away, nor anyone ask if I wanted another one. For the food, 1 drink, 25% tip all came to about $210 for 2ppl. Not cheap, but as mentioned, all delicious. Other things to note: the crowd skews young & hip which was fine, but the place is super loud even with cork on the walls and ceiling, so not a great place for conversation which is fine since you'll be inhaling your food.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and service!
One of the best meals weโve had in Manhattan so far! Great service - the waiter gave us advice on how many dishes to order and his personal recommendations. We had Labneh which was fresh and the roasted garlic on the bread was perfect! Great choice of different types of dishes and very good wine/beer list too! Would highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyPerfect relaxed summer/autumn dinner
1st stop after an 18 hour flight. They managed to squeeze us in for a table of 2 at 10pm despite it being a Friday night. Food portions are great for 2-4, we order 4 sharing plates and a main course between 2 of us, could have done with 1 less bud food was great so no regrets. Service was warm and professional. food: - the frena (warm Moroccan bread) is a must, moist on the insider, nice umami crisp on the outside. - fluke crude, nice fresh flavour. - water melon, refreshing with a bit of spice kick - grilled beef: perfectly done - grilled swordfish: most places grill it too dry. we took a chance here and weโre rewarded, perfectly done and can still taste the oiliness inside.
Be the first to ReplyGreat evening with friends and good food
We sat outside under the twinkling lights. Great atmosphere, friendly staff. The food was amazing. Great selection, lots of variety, stunning flavour combinations, fresh and vibrant plates. A great gem of a restaurant. Good value for money and wine selection a reasonable price for NY.
Be the first to ReplyGreat solo experience at the counter
Very tasty small dishes to share or eat alone. Inside and outdoor seating. I sat as a solo at the counter which has the advantage to watch the chefs prepare the food. Reservations are recommended. I had a mix of vegetable sides (asparagus and broccolini), Lamb, and you have to get the bread! All so tasty. Great service too. Helpful but not all up in your business.
Be the first to ReplyGREAT DINING EXPERIENCE
During our recent visit Manhattan, our daughter who has resided in the East Village for the past five years, had made dinner reservations one month in advance for my wife, daughter and I to experience the Middle Eastern Cuisine at Shukette. When we arrived at 7 pm on a Saturday evening, there was a huge crowd of people waiting in line for a table. (I am certain they had a very long wait!). Inside the restaurant, it was absolutely packed with diners; and the atmosphere was very lively and vibrant. It was so busy with activity; I was certain that it may take ages to get timely service. I was completely wrong! The waitress that attended to our table was very friendly, efficient and well-versed in describing each part of the menu. She remained in the general vicinity of our table; also responsible for other tables in our particular area. When we did receive our order, another waiter or waitress would bring the food to her and she would promptly serve us. Quite ingenious how management devised this type of service which definitely worked extremely well considering the packed restaurant. My wife, daughter and I have experienced in the past Middle Eastern restaurants; however, I would definitely have to put Shukette in a different category of its own. The food, was obviously very well presented and most importantly, very delicious. The three of us shared the โNot Your Average Hummusโ; โFrena (Moroccan bread)โ; โPhyllo Wrapped Fetaโ; โGrilled Asparagusโ; โSunchoke Alla Planchaโ; โIranian Riceโ; โShukette Picklesโ; โLamb Skewerโ and โBang Bang Shata Hot Sauceโ. We left the restaurant 90 minutes later; completely satisfied with our wonderful dining experience; the food was absolutely delicious; service was very, very efficient and friendly; and the ambience was wonderful; vibrant and bustling.
Be the first to ReplyPretty good
Place was pretty full even close to closing. Lively and vibrant. Very polite and friendly staff. I struggled with the identity of the food. Each dish was a modified dish of somewhere in the Middle East. A mix of Persian, Moroccan, Israeli, Palestinian, Turkish, etc dishes. I suspect this is the idea which is great but some of the flavors slightly missed the mark. The portions are small but adequate if you get an appetizer. Overall worth experiencing.
Be the first to ReplyMediterranean plates
Birthday dinner with family, very busy, bustling small restaurant. Interesting different small plates, colorful as well as beautiful presentations on each dish. Delicious dips and breads, vegetable plates all tasty w/ a sauce for each. The lamb was my favorite and the chicken too. SO tasty and tender. Birthday soft ice cream dessert! Have a huge selection of cocktails too. A bit noisy if youโre looking for intimate, I would not recommend. Very tasty!! Great memory, would recommend.
Be the first to ReplyShukette is Overrated
Shukette Lots of hype and buzz whirls about at this Chelsea, small plate, Mediterranean spot. Itโs not easy to snag a reservation, and, when you do, the restaurant will be jammed (rush hour subway jammed) with predominantly โ20 somethings.โ Itโs so packed, itโs hard to maneuver, even while seated at your table. The โatmosphereโ (or complete lack thereof) can only be described as a โlow end diner presently undergoing construction.โ If youโre looking for ambiance, this is not your place. The waiter was very attentive and so pleasant, and made some good ordering suggestions. The food ran the gamut from delicious (infused labneh and seasoned lafa) to good (palate cleansing citrus salad and braised butter beans) to mediocre at best (mushroom stuffed pita). Weโve been to Shuka, and much prefer Shukaโs food, atmosphere and menu. Shukette is not bad, but with atmosphere bordering on the unpleasant and inconsistent food , it just does NOT live up to the hype!
Be the first to ReplyShare, but don't over order like we did!
We had no idea what anything on the menu was so our server was nice to point out her favorite items. The hummus is a taste sensation so make sure to order two! Order plenty of the "breads" to scoop it up!
Be the first to ReplyFabulous food and a great vibe
We didnโt have a reservation and lucked out with a seat at the bar. Everything was absolutely delicious and the staff were amazing. Diego was especially helpful and made our experience extra special. I will definitely return the next time Iโm in NYC!
Be the first to ReplyReservations are tough, but plan ahead.
Amazing food. They serve family style with small plates. The food will come out as they are ready, so I suggest you order a few at a time, as they donโt take too long to prepare. I canโt tell you what to order, as every dish was great. Save up your carbs and try each bread and dipping sauces.
Be the first to ReplyIt's all hype
A few months ago it was a fantastic restaurant. I was eager to return. On a recent visit we ordered some of the same dishes we enjoyed on the previous visit, and now the chef took shortcuts in preparation. The cauliflower was not really roasted, but boiled and put under a broiler for a sear and it showed. Something was lacking in the frema, was it less good quality oil? The quality of the beef was funky, unpleasant. It is hard to find good beef in NYC, but locals will think it is ok because they don't know what beef in Europe can taste like. The labne was good, but not as good as it had been. Although it was fresh, we couldn't finish the calamari as we did not like the preparation. It is a place for young people who follow the hype. Excellent attentive service. The check is done electronically at the table and the button choices for tip are 20%, 22%, 25% or at the bottom there is an option for custom tip to be typed in. We left the table feeling nauseous. Wine prices are high, but NYC restaurants have to pay exorbitant rents somehow. Food prices are a bit high, but the norm for NYC, you would have to know where to go to find a better price/quality ratio. We won't return and not due to prices.
Be the first to ReplyHeavenly fresh breads and dip galore
We celebrated my boyfriends birthday here and already can't wait to go back. Every single thing we tasted was incredible and I recommend anyone going to try all the breads and dips -- its worth it! We also had the Fish in a Cage which was simple and yet so tasty. One heads up: they only serve wine and beer. I was totally fine with this, but it did catch my by surprise.

we sampled several breads and dip, we had some from the shuk, the dessert was refreshing and unique, loved the service and ambience
Be the first to ReplyLeft waiting
Made reservation with resy at 5:45 pm, looked forward to try the restaurant after reading all the great reviews, the problem was the place was closed, waited 10 minutes and left.
Jan 10 in New York is way to cold to wait any longer, shukette will have to be for another time
Rip into this Hip Dip
I feel slightly hampered writing this review; as I was flying solo, I was not able to try as many dishes as I would have like to provide a thorough overview of Shukette's offerings.
I arrived slightly early to my reservation at the Chef's Table (kitchen-bar). The place was already very busy at 6pm but the hostess seated me quickly though at the bar, where I had a great view of the staff's dance as they mixed dips, baked breads, and constructed mains in the narrow passage without crashing into one another.
For starters I selected, after some internal debate, the labneh dip and the frena rip (bread). These were incredible; hot garlicky herby soft but crusty bread and cool creamy slight tart yogurt with pops (literally) of pomegranate. I practically made a sandwich out of these two and still had some labneh left over to take away. I ate the remainder for breakfast; it's practically yogurt cheese and I regret nothing.
I wavered between the kibbeh and the steak kabob; I chose the latter. The meat arrived on a ridiculously long metal skewer. The five chunks were perfectly cooked at medium rare with definite char, but somehow lacked the oomph-in-your-face flavor of the prior dishes. The accompanying potatoes were fabulous though.
There was only one dessert on the menu, a tahini ice cream called the mic drop. It was shaped like one too and contained a great combination of soft smooth creamy sweet crunchy thick flavors and texture.
It's difficult to assess value - the portions weren't enormous but weren't tapas-sized either. The prices attached to what, on the surface, could look pretty basic (a dip, small boule bread, pieces of meat, ice cream) may seem a trifle bold. However, I enjoyed eating the majority of my meal, and even the one disappointment (the steak) was simply due to the lack of flavor pizzazz in comparison to the rest of the dishes.
I ordered two different wines, the Bodegas los Bermejos Malvasia Volcanica Seco and the SoMek The White Road. Both pours were pretty decent and I enjoyed tasting new (to me) alcohol.
Service all around was friendly enough, attentive, and had great pacing. The chef, Ayesha Nurdjaja, was in the kitchen, on the floor, at the hostess stand; at times I would swear she could teleport.
By the time my meal wrapped up, a bit under 90 minutes, the restaurant was packed and there was a line of people waiting to be awarded a seat to tuck into some delicious creative food in an energetic atmosphere.
