The experience was very average - food, service, and ambiance. I'd consider the food "safe" in terms of being creative with Indian flavors. The ambiance was very run of the mill, some artwork here and there but otherwise basic. The service was also fine.

Food was great and very tasty, although small proportions for the high price. Service was prompt. Decor was sub-par and needs much improvement. The menu could do with more options. Tables are cramped and flimsy. Crockery appeared very old.
Be the first to ReplyWe had an absolutely fabulous brunch at SONA.
The food was absolutely delicious. We split the Tikka Flatbread and the Dutch Baby Pancake and enjoyed the Guava mimosas and the hostess' recommend gin and tonic. Everyone who worked there was lovely but the hostess was particularly hospitable and sweet. Highly recommend this spot!

Inadequate Indian restaurant with a pricey hipster attempt at Bombay-styled Punjabi food. The lamb is probably the only dish worth trying if you decide to go since it's owned by Priyanka Chopra. $30 a dish. 2.75/5 stars as a dinner spot.
Be the first to ReplyThe menu was limited, food and ambiance were good.
It might be a bit expensive on the price wise for that menu, overall not a disappointing experience.

The taste, aroma, flavor, and freshness of the food were just perfect. Scheduling and canceling reservations was easy.We ended up getting take-out, and the food was properly packaged. The only reason I wouldn't give it 5-stars is because the portions were too small.

Decadent and delicious! I came here with a friend and we were blown away. From the moment we sat down (seated quickly and hospitably) to hours later when we staggered out, a little loopy with pleasure (and a couple cocktails on my end, tbh), we had an incredible time. The food is a mix of slightly updated Indian classics like burrata butter chicken and Goan fish curry (for less adventurous eaters like myself), as well as more daring, inventive fare like a rich mutton masala and an aam panna crudo. There were also lots of vegetarian options, including a very tasty beet appetizer.Ambiance is elegant but welcoming, would be great for a date night (there were plenty of couples seated near us, so clearly I'm not the only one who had the idea). The service was attentive and friendly--speedy, too, though we weren't in any rush. Finally, the desert was amazing! I ordered a carrot cake to share in an attempt to be vaguely healthy and then pretty much ate the whole thing, hunched over the plate and staring down my friend like, "Don't even try it..."

As a New Yorker I will tell you how wonderful it is to have a restaurant of this caliber in your neighborhood- I'd travel across town for food this good but luckily it's in my backyard. Here's the thing about Sona: it's the best Indian food by far in NYC but its not only about how good the food is- it's also the atmosphere- the staff! Anthony and the team are giants in the industry. To be this good in NYC is a triumph. This is our go-to restaurant whenever we want a special night out with friends.

Good food, generous service and beautiful ambience makes Sona worth a visit. The menu is quite fancy with unique names. Being a vegetarian we have ordered Avocado Papdi chaat, chilli paneer pizza and vegetable biryani. Chilli paneer pizza is worth a try, rich in taste. Kudos to the team Sona. Love,Amey Phatak
Be the first to ReplyExpensive Indian restaurant.
I was not impressed and really have had much better Indian food in NYC. It was generally a tad bland and portions were a tad small.Service was okay.Food took a long time to come out.I likely won't return.
Be the first to ReplyExceptional 2nd visit to Sona.
From the variety of drinks we enjoyed at the bar (Gold Negroni, Mango Lassi, Soicy Chili Margarita, West Bengal Buck) to the amazing dishes we shared at dinner -- Buckwheat Bhel, Samosas, Shakarkandi Chaat (Japanese sweet potatoes), Crab Puri & Caviar, Crispy Rawa Prawn, Kofta Korma, India House's Butter Chicken, Mysore Lame, and more -- everything was a 10/10. Friendly staff, beautiful decor and table settings, incredible quality and space. Already looking forward to my next visit!

The butter chicken was okay, but you have to order rice separately. It didn't come with any rice. My friend got a rice dish that was kind of dry. However, the ice cream dessert was one of the best desserts ever. Not super impressed? But it was decent food and not a bad experience.
Be the first to ReplyOh Sona.
We actually love Baar Baar I think they actually got this concept quite well. Not sure why Sona tries so hard and fails so miserably!!! Sona is a HUGE space! It's fairly pretty gold and white nothing exciting , no places for photo ops so don't bother. We actually did the restaurant week menu and although pricey that's probably the only reason it wasn't super expensive . The decor is ok nothing spectacular . Otherwise it would have been additionally expensive and not worth it , for the food was left lacking . Also things like charging $8 for an accompaniment which should ideally part of a dish . but I get it this is how indian restaurants want to leave their legacy. Apps: Rock Shrimp Koliwada was SO delicious as were the Stuffed Chicken Wings YUM . Also off the restaurant week menu I got the Crab and Caviar Puri and the combination is soooo good! But the caviar is kaluga amber and just mediocre . All of these were very delicious and appropriately priced! Hard pass on the Gunpowder Gobhi (And I usually love cauliflower) and the mutton cutlet. Don't bother! Entrees : Were all just mediocre at best. Tamarind bbq Lamb Chops were ok . Nothing to write home about . We also got the Butter Chicken very basic . There weren't a lot of options on entrees for restaurant week . We also got sides of Black Beluga Dal Makhni and Saag Paneer. Also whatever . I think I'd wanna try the Black Pepper Short Rib. Desert 5/5 : Chocolate Bebinca( yum filter coffee ice cream! ) and the Pear Jalebi both of which were absolutely delicious !!! Jalebi baby indeed . So go here for the small plates and dessert and skip the entrees ! Although I heard they've changed most of their menu .

Went here for the hype, regretted wasting $$$. Tried malabar biryani (which was white rice and chicken with no masala), Mangalorean fish curry wasn't even close to the real flavor. Overall, it's sub-par.

This restaurant was excellent, from the food to the service, highly recommend. We went for my birthday and it was definitely elevated Indian cuisine (we are Indian) but the chef definitely gave our traditional dishes a unique spin. From the ghee roast made with Gruyère cheese to stuffed chicken wings that I could literally have eaten more of, the spice, the flourish, and execution was impeccable. Our server, mcqueenie, was amazing, and offered great recommendations. We will definitely be back!
Be the first to ReplyDespite the name, Sona did not live up to the expectations.
It was hard to figure out exactly what their cuisine was, since it was neither Indian nor fusion. As a born and raised Indian, I too have a strong understanding of authentic Indian cuisine. However, the reflection of that was absent throughout the dining experience. There were a lot of other things that disappointed me besides the taste. Let me highlight the major issues - 1. We found the sitting arrangement to be the worst. The chairs were neither comfortable nor clean.2. The cutlery was not clean, which must be addressed for hygiene reasons.3. We were forced to order main courses with starters due to their kitchen policy. 4. Wrong order was served and that too after a long delay.5. In both large and small plates, the food portions were almost the same. Nearly every dish was either sweet or oily.6. Several pieces of Gun powder Gobi pieces were undercooked. The aloo tikki looked like an aloo biscuit and was the thinnest I've ever seen.7. Neither sides nor chutney were served with any of the starters, which is an Indian restaurant standard.8. Sona's owners have deep ties to Mumbai, where Bhel Poori is a popular street food. It was a shock to all of us that Bhel tasted as if it had just come out of an expired packet.9. There seemed to be judgemental attitudes among the staff, whether it was about giving us a better table or how they greeted us.10. In a rush to take away the plates or to serve the bill, they didn't even care if we were still eating. There is a long way to go before Sona becomes a customer-friendly restaurant. There is a huge sense of discrimination in the air, which can be detected by high class customers walking in. The restaurant is not at all affordable, but that's okay if at-least the food is tasty. It is my great regret to say that if you think that the Indian food served here is the best, you haven't explored the best places yet.One of my best days would have been ruined had I chosen this place to celebrate it. It's not worth it.
Be the first to ReplyThe service is terrible.
We were rushed through the meal. Plates were swiped off the table before you set your fork down for the last bite. The bill came while we were still eating. A horrible experience. A weak wine list. The food is so/so. The carrot cake is a mushy deconstructed mess. Not a good experience.
Be the first to ReplyWe came for my husband's birthday dinner in late Feb.
Overall food and drinks were pretty good (mains were pretty mainline but everything else was more inventive), service was good, but price was too much for our large group.Reservation/pricing: The reason for only 3 stars. I called for reservations for a group of 7 and coordinated with Sarah via e-mail. For a group of 7 or more, they stated there was a $140 per person food/drink minimum. This was in the main dining room, for 2 hours maximum. I don't know about you, but it is REALLY hard to eat $140pp in 2 hours, and that is outrageously expensive. We were locked into this in some ways as my in-laws wanted me to take husband here for his birthday dinner. Let's just say everyone had 2-3 drinks, we ordered every single appetizer and every single dessert, and were just short of our minimum (luckily they let this slide). I had to rush the desserts and us getting out of the restaurant as the server started hovering when our 2 hours were up.Service: was good, our server was sweet and came around frequently. They brought a nice candle out for my husband in his dessert (but left us to deliver the singing).Ambiance: dim, not as much art hanging on the wall/as pretty as I was told it would be. OK.Drinks: Overall drinks were a hit, creative, beautiful, and tasty. Everything was good.Small plates:Golgappa shots: the classic was great (for a dish you can get in India for 10 cents). Everyone in the table made a funny face when they tried the tequila variant, so skip that.BEST: Gunpowder gohbi (SO spicy, oh god), rock shrimp koliwada (tasty little morsels, we ordered a second round), stuffed chicken wings (at 4 wings, actually a fair amount of food), aloo tikka (super flavorful & pretty)GOOD: Crab puri & caviar (you get 4, liked the crispy lentils they used to plate them), buckwheat bhel (tasty and beautifully presented, but eat it fast or it gets soggy)MEH/SKIP IT: goat cheese & spinach samosa (your avg spanakopita is tastier), Calcutta mutton cutlet (not very tasty)Oysters: $40/dozen, we ordered the raw. People enjoyed them but I think my husband got some food poisoning from this. Can't prove it!Mains:GOOD: Malabar chicken biriyani (quite tasty), Goan fish curry, butter chicken (although nothing mind-blowing about it)MEH: Kofta korma (tiny little koftas, not very much sauce), garlic naan (kinda...hard and not very tasty), chili cheese stuffed naan (just odd), malai kebab (relatively bland which is good for kids, but mine was kinda rubbery)Something came with a raita with...honey? which was a little odd. And one little bowl of rice. They were out of lamb or we would have tried that.Desserts:GOOD: Lemon coriander yogurt misti doi (the biggest of the bunch, creamy and tangy, maybe not for everyone). Both ice creams were small in size but amazingly flavored, I loved the masala chai, and the mango passion sorbet packed a big punch of flavor.STILL PRETTY GOOD: Caramelized apple chiroti (kind of a weird meld of textures, with this big crunchy chiroti over a pretty firm cheesecake. Also quite a bit of food), pear jalebi (the bourbon ice cream was amazing, but kind of overwhelmed the pear), chocolate bebinca (nice and rich, but strongly coffee-y).

I was initially hesitant on writing this review because I Really wanted to like this restaurant but sadly our entire group fell very ill with food poisoning immediately after dinner: it was an extremely unpleasant 48 hours post dinner. To start with the positives: beautiful food presentation especially the buckwheat bhel $18 with its stunning honeycomb top. The rock shrimp kaliwada $28, goan fish curry $36, and the edible decoration which the crab puri sits on were tasty. Now sadly with the negatives: very high price point for such small servings. The entrees were very spicy and highly acidic which exacerbated our sickness. The clams in the goan fish curry might have been the root cause of our food poisoning as they tasted off. The butter chicken $32 was extremely disappointing and underwhelming: this dish was by far the least of our favorite. The crab puri $30 was lackluster and chicken biriyani $32 was too spicy. Overall, a very disappointing experience which does not warrant the premium price.

Having traveled to almost 50 countries in all parts of the world I have eaten all kinds of Indian food ranging from the curry houses of London to the Bombay dhabas to the fancy spots in Hong Kong and Dubai and of course many many places in NYC. But this has to be the worst rip off when it comes to Indian food. The food is tasteless. Portions are micro. Service is slow as hell. And ambience is like a fish market. Noisy with bad seating arrangements. This is just a pretentious place that is attaching the name of a Indian cinema star to bait diners. But that's where the "charm" ends. Do not waste your money or time here. Your epicurean senses will be severely disappointed.

Reduce the music and help guests feel the hospitality of fine dining if you want to portray your restaurant as upscale. This restaurant is decent maybe for delivery or take out, don't get too caught up in the low class ambiance, unprofessional staff/management and low quality and quantity food.

I don't usually write reviews, but I just thought the Yelp ratings were completely off. The food and cocktails were delicious. The staff were extremely kind and attentive. Dessert was next level yum! We ended up spending about 90$ per person, and we left full full. The vibe was cool, reminded me of an Indian wedding. Looking around at the other patrons, everyone seemed to be having a good time, including the staff! 10/10 recommend if your looking for an upscale Indian dining experience.

Not sure why reviews as so low! Food and ambiance both excellent! Private Event Drinks were delicious - spicy margaritas and mango lassi were perfect starters.Food: if you like thin crispy Naan, you will love!Butter chicken was delicious. Medium spice level so if you prefer mild, you should request. Family style menu was delicious. Dessert needs some work as the ice cream and chocolate did not pair well together. Service was exceptional. Timmy was friendly fun and attentive!

I have to admit, I almost didn't give Sona a chance because of its relatively low Yelp score. But I'm so glad I did! Everything from the music, decor, food to the service was phenomenal. My boyfriend and I went on a Saturday night at 9:30pm with no reservation and got a nice corner booth seat in the heart of the restaurant. I loved the huge mirrors and modern decor. My boyfriend loved the art, and it turns out that Sona has an art program where they curate pieces from local artists in India, so cool!We ordered the stuffed chicken wings, crab and caviar puri, curry prawns, and butter chicken. All delicious and must tries! My only gripe is that rice is $5 and you only get like a cup's worth so you're left spending more and not really being able to sop up all the goodness. We also got dessert: the chai ice cream and the apple chiroti. I gotta say, dessert was good but not amazing, so I'd stick to entrees and maybe get a nice tea afterward! All in all, Sona was a vibe and we will definitely be going back!
