Best sushi in Long Island City
Despite its Michelin star, my wife and I kept passing this restaurant on the way to other sushi restaurants on Vernon Blvd. The $75 Omakase just seemed too much when sushi nearby was very good. A wedding anniversary got me to try Sushi Daizen, and, believe me, it was worth the money! A large hot sake for me, and a cold glass for my wife, were a great start. We sat in one of the wooden booths for two, in the rear, where there was also a table for four. The noise level was blessedly very low -- one of the pluses of the prices here is that you don't get loud, laughing and clapping parties of young people -- perfect for an anniversary celebration for two. The jazz on the speakers was perfect. Our Omakase started with two cups of hot and tasty fish soup, then we each got a platter of five pieces of sushi of the day, which included a piece of omelet. Each fish was perfection. When we finished, we got a second platter of five pieces -- again, perfection, including eel and mackeral, which I typically skip because of the fishyness. Lastly, we got a hand roll -- again, the fatty tuna was sublime. We won't become regulars, but we will come again for special occasions, and our bar for great sushi has been permanently raised.

It's easy to walk past Sushi Daizen; it's not especially well-marked from the outside, and the entrance is quite narrow. The restaurant is not large, and seats at the sushi bar are in great demand. The menu is minimalist: pretty much just sushi and sashimi. The sushi omakase, consisting of soup, an appetizer, ten pieces of sushi, and a handroll, is reasonably priced, and the fish was fresh, if not especially exotic in origin. The server did advise us that the uni was from Hokkaido. Very comfortable setting for a date night.

Went there with 3 other people to try out the omakase. The 10 piece was priced at $70. Pretty much inline with most of the nicer places in the city. Overall, it wasn't bad, just didn't really stand out among their peers. Its was sparsely decorated and the vibe was just ok. After the omakase, we order additional pieces. food+booze for 4 costs about $500. So not a cheap place. If you are in the mood for better sushi in LIC and don't mind paying up for it, give it go. I, myself, checked it off my list and probably won't be heading back
