Hashiri - Great Once Again
Hashiri - Great Once Again
Since my wife’s corporate offices have mostly moved to Chicago, our monthly (if not more) trips to San Francisco, are coming to an end, after over 15 years. Because of the great dining, we will miss our trips, and are in the process of re-visiting most of the restaurants, where we have had good meals. Most of these have a Michelin star, or two, or three. One restaurant, that we greatly enjoyed was Hashiri, 4 Mint Plaza, on the edge of SoMa (South of Market), and next to the San Francisco US Mint building.
During this August visit, we managed to get reservations, and for the Chef’s Tasting Menu. We walked over, and were promptly seated, just at end of the Chef’s Counter, which dominates the room. Immediately in front of us was a glass cooler, with most of the ingredients for the evening’s meal, on display - a very attractive arrangement, and something which I had missed on our previous visit, as we were seated at a table, and the Chef’s Counter was filled with diners.
One of the first things that struck me was the presentation of individual, personalized menus, with “Welcome Home, Mr,” and the same for my wife. That was a nice touch, and as we had only dined there once, back in early 2017, impressive. Note had been made of my wife’s bi-valve allergy, and arrangements had been made with chef, to accommodate her completely.
We started with the Leclerc Briant Rosé Champagne NV, and the Chartogne-Taillet Brut Cuvee Sainte Anne NV, but would soon move onto whatever beverage was paired with each course.
Our Tasting Menu for the evening was interesting, as were the beverage pairings:
Sakizuke - Summer vegetables, red pepper, and a soy milk mousse - an interesting presentation, in a highball glass, and delicious.
Hassun - Imperial Prawn w/ tofu skin wasabi, peach, green bean goma, wild King Salmon shio koji zuke, A5 Wagyu dashi shoyu zuke and Black Mission Fig dengaku - wow, what an array, and all so very delicious.
Owan - freshwater Eel w/ egg tofu and Summer truffles - outstanding, and I am not the biggest fan of most Eel dishes, but this one was an exception.
Shunsai - wild young Amberjack w/ wild baby saltwater Eel - again, a great dish with Eel.
Yakimono - Binchoan-grilled A5 Miyazaki Wagyu w/ sansho coulis - this might have been the ultimate dish in a meal filled with lovely, culinary delights.
Kuchinaoshi - Meyer Lemon w/ ginger sparkling - a great palate cleanser.
Chef’s Omakase Nigiri Sushi - these came too quickly, and over a very long period of time, that I could barely photograph and devour them, let alone take notes. I think that I counted 8 Sushi items, and chef seemed determined to see that we were filled up - and with great Sushi - the best that we have encountered outside of Tokyo.
Akadashi - an interlude.
Kanmi - seasonal fruits w/ Champagne gelée and sweet red bean jelly - outstanding, and how nice to end with Champagne - where we started the evening.
Service was excellent, and we wanted for nothing. The Sushi might have come a bit more quickly, than I would have liked, but it was being made in front of us, so served when ready. Each dish was beautiful to behold, and each was a delight to eat.
The lighting is great, and set off the blonde and cherry wood. The noise level was low, though the room filled rather quickly, after we were seated.
The beverage pairings (mostly Sake, but some wines too) were excellent, and I hope that my photographs will help me find most of those, locally in Arizona
In all, a perfect evening, and we were so very glad that we had managed to get a reservation, to return to Hashiri - just another spectacular meal, that lasted all of 3 hours.
A fantastic evening
I really enjoyed by dinner at Hashiri. The sushi was excellent--distinctive flavors and a wide variety of fish--while the staff was kind and helpful. The menu made just the right level of concession to Western palates. In particular, dinner finished with an excellent dessert course, which I appreciated. Overall, a great experience; well worth a visit.

I hosted an intimate dining experience for 12 at Hashiri last night. I chose an experience that included their 6-course Omakase, plus the sake pairing.
From the restaurant ambience, to greetings, and course & sake introductions, to the food...it was a night to remember.
Thank you Hashiri.
Quite Good, A Bit Overpriced, Enjoyable
Dined with a client and sat at the sushi counter. With some sake our bill exceeded $1,000 which is wildly expensive. Generally, each dish was quite good with one exception that really missed. The nigiri sushi was exceptional. The service was impeccable and they never missed a thing.
I am rating it 4 star because I think the prices are a bit high, for example, we added a tuna hand roll that cost $25 each and they are tiny. They also add a 20% gratuity which they deserved but I like to decide for myself.
Great service, nice ambiance and good food make this a worthwhile experience. Just know you are paying about 20/30% more than I think its worth.
Super Good And You Can Easily Make It Super Expensive
Dinner with business partners. This restaurant is a branch of the one in Daikanyama, Tokyo. We had omakase with wine/sake combination pairing, which is a never-failed way to make your check super-expensive. They use Coravin Wind (, which uses argon gas) to open wine bottles. It was super expensive, but the whole experience was super with perfect food, presentation, decor, drink, chefs, services, and knowledgeable waiters.

I want to like you but...
...your Keisiki offering was just average and wasn't a mind blowing experience, as your price tag would suggest...
When we opted for weekend seating, we were told only the keiski offering + sushi omakase was available and that sushi omakase offering was only offered during the week. Bummmmmmmer.
Add insult to the injury, the sushi omakse offering was only 10 nigiri, which the last one was a tamago (egg)....
However, the sushi omakase, however short it was, was the highlight of the evening...
Especially the Uni nigiri from Hokkaido....yes I squealed a little bit as the small morsel of delight exploded in my mouth with rich creaminess and delight.
Of course I asked for extra servings! ($20 / piece....)
Anyways...the interior design was modern, hip, and VERY appropriate.
You will certainly impress your guest as you step in.
The service was on point, as at least no fewer than 3 staff members were always hovering around us, but out in the distance.
At no instance, did a drop of water or sauce stay on our table for more than 10 seconds, as the staff swooped in like a well trained ballerina, and mopped the slightest of mess without my notice.
It's quite a bit of show, really.
I think I would've liked it more if the Keiski offering wasn't mandatory and we stuck with just the sushi omakase.
It felt as though I was forced to purchase something I wasn't really too thrilled about and the end result, I really wasnt impressed with the Keiski offering.
Having been to other high end sushi omakase locations in SF, Los Angeles, and Tokyo, I felt it was overpriced overall and after having dropped close to $1000 for 2 people, I left the restaurant still hungry and unsatisfied...
