Decent, but not outstanding in any category.
For some reason I recall this place being much better first time around. My salad was worse than regular salad joint you'd go for lunch. Overall an ok place but I won't be returning: the service was slow and inattentive (even though the place was empty), and ambiance is not warm.

Generally, I shy away from leaving reviews on Yelp as the company likes to censor comments which do not jibe with their ideologies, but leftists are known to stymie any speech of which they do not approve. Taureaux Tavern has excellent food, yet is underrated. The forthcoming comments relate to service and operations. While none will keep me from subsequent visits, I view providing such as constructive criticism.First, while neither me nor my dinner companion were visiting for Chicago Restaurant Week, we did ask to see the special menu. Upon doing so, l learned the house offered two soups: French onion and du jour (that particular day it was potato leek). Not sure why the regular menu did not state such because the soup du jour was superb. So, too, was the steak frites, my entrée of the regular menu.Second, the Classic Caesar is massive. Easily a meal itself. And that is a small problem. Knowing each of us also ordered full-size entrees, it would have made sense for the waitress to inform us that these were not "side" salads by any definition. Or TT could also offer a smaller portion. We were paid a friendly visit by one of the managers. She noticed we had way too much food going on, offered to remove one of the salads from the bill, but did not.Last, the infamous surcharge as a consequence of the Wuhan pandemic. We are at the point that such penalty applied for the privilege of dining at a particular establishment is no longer a novelty. Never a fan of government interference, my understanding is the city of Chicago has instituted permission of such levy as long as it is disclosed prior to purchase. The was no mention of 3.25% on either the regular or special menu. It appeared only on the receipt which, unlike much of the competition, offered no proviso about it being removed upon request. Tsk, tsk, Taureaux Tavern.

Came for lunch and a drink, as were showing as open on yelp, but had a private event planned so kitchen was closed during business hours so no lunch without reservations! Bummer. no comments about food or service, it was fairly empty when I went at 2pmAmbience was great, wished I had tasted their food, walked several blocks after reading reviews to try it! Drinks- I had old fashioned, templeton rye, average at best but they do have good whiskey selection.
Be the first to ReplyIs casual upscale a thing? Because that's this place.
Cool, hip, tucked away on Van Buren. Awesome vibe when you walk in. Full disclosure, I was there for a work event. They have a nice spot up above, overlooking the bar and dining area. Apps were fresh, flavors plentiful, perfectly set up. Dinner was pre-set and consisted of a fresh salad with mint - not overpowering at all, a nice fresh different salad. Dinner had a family style of offerings: their famous chicken thighs pounded flat, nice big rigatoni in vodka sauce, a beef dish that I can't remember because I didn't have it. Also fried brussels and french fries. Everything was amazing, wonderful flavors, I could have eaten all night long. The chicken thighs perfectly done, brussels are amazing. And honestly, even the french fries were perfect. Service was great, wine glass was never empty. I would come her again for any reason.

I was leaning toward the roasted chicken thighs, and when my server (Val) suggested the same made, it was a 'no brainer'. While they were out of cauliflower, which typically comes with the dish, the asparagus spears more than made up for it. The skin was roasted perfectly, and the serving size didn't disappoint. The chicken was boneless, and had what seemed more like breast meat quality. (For these reasons, I'd say this is a restaurant that helps take the bite out of inflation.) With a mini pitcher of jus and a side of mashed potatoes, Heaven was just a few bites away. While I finished the meal off with the chocolate mousse, which was decadent, I hope my sins will be forgiven, given I am in Heaven after all. The service was attentive, but not overly so, and there was no shortage of warm smiles either:) I came in without reservations by the way, and for all the aforementioned reasons have no reservations in recommending Taureaux Tavern.Overall Score: 4.5Food: Served hot and with fresh ingredientsService: Warm and friendly, attentiveAmbience: Might benefit from white tablecloths, flowers and votive candlesMusic: Easy listening pop
Be the first to ReplyI'm not sure how this place has 4 stars.
I was underwhelmed at best. I was dining alone and it seemed like a long wait to put in my drink order. Thought the patty melt sounded good so I ordered it- they were out! I have no idea if they were out of burgers too and I thought that was really odd to be out of that. So I ordered the pasta and added chicken. Should have know that a restaurant whose only chicken dish is a roasted thigh would have used dark meat in the pasta. Ok so it's not my personal preference but at one point I thought I was eating an artichoke heart. Nope- rubbery, over cooked dark meat. Also wasn't a huge fan of the vodka sauce- kind of wimpy and the "mini" rigatoni was mini only if you're a giant. At least the wine was tasty. Maybe other stuff is better on the menu but I won't be going back to try anything. Many far better places in Chicago.

We wanted lunch but not a sandwich, and this place is only 2 blocks from our hotel. Nice size outdoor patio with pergola on a courtyard. We each had the Cobb salad, I had chicken, my hubby had shrimp. Both were delicious. Freshly grilled protein. And they were huge! The Roquefort dressing was pre mixed on the greens with the other ingredients layered on top. There was live music in the courtyard today as well. We'd definitely come back if we're in the area again.

5 star restaurant overall including food, but rounding up because of the really excellent service. Friendly manager, gracious server and busboy. Ordered nachos and they were notably spicier than the average nacho - maybe a little lighter handed with the escabeche and then it would be perfection?

Food 3/5The menu features a limited collection of French staples, mixed in with a few continental dishes. Food was ok. Everyone in my group ordered steak frites and none of them came out right. A medium rare came out very, very rare and a medium came out medium rare. Also, the dish description touted Bernaise sauce, which was noticeable absent and replaced with some type of aioli.Atmosphere and Decor 3/5The tavern, and coziness that comes with the moniker, is nowhere to be found. Instead, the restaurant serves vibes of a corporate-style dining room or one of those restaurants in the lobby of a city hotel. Largely devoid of personality.Service 4/5Seating was prompt and our server was very friendly. She expedited our meal to ensure we wrapped in time to make it to the theater. Halfway through the meal, I asked another server for more sauce, which arrived after I had finished my meal
Be the first to ReplyCame in on a weeknight and was seated right away.
It has a great ambiance with a classic feel to this restaurant. There is plenty of seating and a nice sized bar area. Food and drinks were reasonably priced. I would recommend for a nice date night!
Be the first to ReplyWent in for a drink at the bar and a sandwich.
Josue was bartending. He made me a wonderful Old Fashion. I ordered the Patty Melt with truffle onions. The flavor was out of this world. It was accompanied with great fries. Met the GM, Kyle. Very friendly and welcoming. A definite place to visit when in Chicago.

17 for 8 ppl to dine on 12.10 only for them to call today on 12.06 to say that the only option we had if we wanted to fulfill the reservation was to sit in the bar and pre-order because they now have three private events. Having booked almost a month in advance and to find out the week of was very disappointing.

We were there for a private wedding and it was a perfect venue. My niece made an excellent choice for the wedding in the garden room, then open bar with appetizers, the meal was served and dancing. The food choices were excellent. Amazed with the staffs efficiency and friendliness. Thank you to the restaurant for a perfect evening.Pomme FritesFaroe Islands Salmon

Amazing staff, and even more amazing food :) You definitely have to try the French onion soup.
Be the first to ReplyI mess with this place heavily.
Anytime I am waiting for a train this is my go-to. All of the bartenders and staff are extremely nice and on top of their game. Any manager I have seen is also very cool as well. Usually will stop in for a drink or two, but have gotten their food as well and everything has been spectacular. My favorite drink, probably across the city, is the "Sympathy for the Devil" cocktail. Would recommend this place 100% and am very happy it opened up.
Be the first to ReplyMy coworkers and I decided to try this place for Chicago
My coworkers and I decided to try this place for Chicago restaurant week. This review is solely based on the menu that was offered during this time. The restaurant itself has a great ambiance and is decorated beautifully. We came in during lunch time and I was surprised to see how packed it was. Our table was upstairs and it was ready by the time we arrived (we had reservations). Our waiter was friendly, efficient and helped out by offering several recommendation to a coworker that was vegetarian. The menu was a standard 3 course lunch. French onion soup or baked goat cheese for appetizers; steak, salmon or cobb for the main course and a chocolate mouse cake or apple tart for desert. We were a table of 15 people, so everyone basically ordered one of each item on the menu minus the Cobb. I had the French onion soup as an appetizer. It tasted okay, but I felt that it was extremely heavy on the cheese. The baked goat cheese was excellent according to the rest of the table. For my main course, I had the salmon and that was extremely delicious. The lemon sauce that came with it really elevated the taste. The steak was cooked perfectly, according to my coworker and the fries were a perfect crips. The desserts were rather disappointing. The chocolate mouse was just average and the apple tart was a little sour. We really enjoyed this place and I plan to come back here to try their full menu. Definitely a must try!
Be the first to ReplyI had lunch here during restuarant week 2020.
Service was nice and swift. I had the French onion soup and it was good to be b/c it wasn't salty like most of the FOS I've had. The only thing is there is a lot of bread (I'm trying to keep my carbs low) but the taste to me is delish. I really like their chicken cobb salad. Well made and dressed just right. My favorite is the chocolate mousse cake w/this mango tasty spread. I would recommend this place for lunch or dinner.

So as one who has been heroin NUMEROUS occasions, it's not the best. Service is pretty good, but it's apparent that they're trying to upsell you at every turn. I visited during restaurant week and wasn't presented with the restaurant week menu. Food is OK, service was really quick so I didn't have the opportunity to enjoy courses. I wouldn't go here as a "go to" restaurant, but in a pinch, it will do. My perspective - if you're looking for a food French restaurant, you can do better. If you're looking for a drink before you catch your Metra, this is it...
