Overall Thoughts: For weekend lunch, Thattu offers quality, flavorful food and a minimalist, casual vibe. It operates on a no-tip model and is mostly self-service during lunch. The interior is spacious and though I made a reservation, there weren't many people when we went on Sunday afternoon. It gets a lot busier and more difficult to reserve for dinner, which has an expanded menu and full service. Lunch will do for now, but I'll be sure to hit them up again one day for dinner. The lunch prices are reasonable ranging from $15-$20 for entrees, though the portions for each dish are kind of small. Food I tried: - Chaatertots (4.3/5): Super crispy tater tots! The spicy beet ketchup wasn't spicy but had an interesting, detectably beet flavor that I enjoyed. - Kerala Fried Chicken Sandwich (4.6/5): Genuinely delicious and worth the hype. The chicken is crispy and flavorful, and the perfect sauce to ingredient ratio rendered it fantastic both flavor- and texture-wise. - Chorum Kariyum - Vegetarian Meal Combo (4/5): The flavors were solid, but the sides were quite small and not very filling for the price. -- Price (relative to peers): 4.3/5 Food: 4.3/5 Ambience: 4.7/5 Service: 4.5/5 Overall Value: 4.4/5

We went for a lunch date and it didn't quite feel like a date since you get your own silverware and cups, etc. but the food made up for the casual service. We started with crispy chicken bites which were made with dark meat so the exterior was crunchy and spicy but inside was tender and juicy. We tried a fruit cooler with mint, ginger & cardamom. It was quite refreshing with a lingering peppery aroma. Loved the lunch fish fry which for $18 is quite a steal. The fish was seared well but the accompanying butternut squash & red bean mash was the star of that dish. We also had the kadala curry which fell a little flat in comparison because it was pretty much one note compared to all the others. The appam bread that pairs with the curry is pillowy in the center with crispy laced edges. Wish lunch service had more variety. It's a pretty limited menu; only one curry offering. Plan to come back for dinner service where there is full service and more offerings.
overall: 3.
5 food: 4 ambience: 2.5 service: 1.5 this was recommended by a number of my Indian friends, and much like my fav spot in the city, Basant, it focuses on a specific cuisine that is not the standard American Indian fare. which i love and appreciate! the food we had was great to just okay: kappa bonda were kind of bland kerala fried chicken bites were a highlight! and i ordered the chettinad pepper chicken for my main with appam, which i found to be quite good and nice and spicy. my bf's kadala curry was pretty good and the rice was alright. sadly the whole experience felt very impersonal with the worker (since there aren't really any waiters here) preëmpting all conversation by saying they are tipless and everything is handled via QR code: ordering, menu, paying. which leads to the question: if "tips" are baked into the food prices (which is totally fine), then why is there really just minimal service? (e.g.: i had to repeatedly go pull new half-filled water bottles from the bar to refill my cup, and after that initial interaction, no one passed by again to check in or even ask if we were enjoying the food, since it was our first time dining in, and it is a unique cuisine type.) sadly, this weird impersonal and cold experience brought down the general vibe of going out to eat. however, i'd go back to try some of the other items, but will set expectations lower. maybe just go for a quick lunch versus a nice dinner.
Very rarely does a place get 5 stars, in my opinion, but
Very rarely does a place get 5 stars, in my opinion, but Thattu is such a place. Opened up by a friendly couple, one of the partners is the chef and can be seen serving and picking up plates; arrogance is not something you will find here, not in their service and not in their dishes. The food was some of the best Indian food I have had in Chicago and totally worth the effort of finding a reservation. The eggplant theeyal which I highly recommend for it's intense and bold flavor. The chicken biryani and the Chettinad pepper chicken are a must! My mouth was overwhelmed with pleasure and it felt like every sensation was being activated. It wasn't too spicy (I can handle heat) but it still left me with that warm feeling in my belly after a spicy meal. The setting is cozy and servers are knowledgeable and friendly.

Featuring Kerala cuisine ( new cuisine in the Indian culinary venues in CHICAGO) Ate FISH FRY Aappam with Root Korma and Chettinad chicken. I totally understand that they have to cater to caucasian palate but there was no offer of spice level to the customers, so I was disappointed. My origins are in Kerala and while I would never compare the flavors here to the native one at least some of the dishes should scream original in flavors. FISH FRY was cold to eat and the chicken chettinad was watery and lacked the flavor and it ideally is spice heaven. Aappam was served cold and was sticking to the plate . Glad I tried it but it aint the creme de la creme it claimed.
I have had my share of kerala dishes and Thattu is a decent
I have had my share of kerala dishes and Thattu is a decent intro but there are plenty more awesome dishes from the state. Menu is a mix of authentic and elevated dishes from Kerala cuisine. Kadala curry with appam, meen polichatthu and the mushrooms were good. Brinjal(eggplant) dish was meh - the sauce was good but the brinjal wasn't great. Biryani was forgettable. We tried a few of the cocktails and mocktails which felt a tad too diluted. Service was friendly. The menu is on the QR code and you pay through there as well. Parking isn't terrible but still challenging when you are in a new area - there is free parking on the street and side street.
There are deep flavors to be plumbed at Thattu off of
There are deep flavors to be plumbed at Thattu off of Belmont. Prepare to be smashed over the head with the essence of curry leaves, coconut oils, and the culinary might of the spiciest coastline on planet Earth. We ordered half of the menu off the rip and were thoroughly impressed with the level of heat (which is spicy but not devastatingly so, more than mild less than volcanic) and prolific use of green cardamom, clove, cinnamon et al. particularly in the preparation of their meat dishes. It was also the first time we ever had appam, a sort of Keralan/Tamil "pancake" reminiscent of Ethiopian injera except with coconut milk and fermented rice batter. It provides a textural bedding and is a great balance to the chettinad chicken. Tearing off chunks of appam and using it for the food provided additional tactility to the whole experience. Yucca and plantain also make delightful and welcome appearances. The biryani was compelling because each grain of basmati appeared to be imbued with the soul of 34 million people. Every dish oozed aromaticity, wafting through the air like culinary incense. If you are allergic to flavor and punchy food, do not come to Thattu. If that's the sort of thing you tend to enjoy, make the reservation.
We had lunch today at Thattu.
It was bustling with almost every table full, but the tables have ample space between them and it wasn't too loud. The beautiful exposed brick and huge windows cast a warm glow on the modern dining room. They nailed Indian flavors without being heavy or greasy, and the fun fusion dishes we tried, like Indian-spiced tater tots with sulfur salt and beet ketchup are well executed and a lot of fun. It would be easy to eat healthy at Thattu, and I enjoyed the vegetarian combo with vegetable curry, rice, beans, and sauteed Brussels sprouts with coconut. We also tried the fried chicken with dill sauce, and the catfish. Guests order through an app at Thattu, and the cost is inclusive of service. They don't accept tips. At lunch, you grab your own flatware, napkins, and water from a bar in the dining room. We didn't mind this. One particularly nice touch was that when we arrived, there were no tables available, and we agreed to sit at the bar. The host said he would let us know if a table became available, since sometimes guests cancel very close to their reservation time. Lucky for us, about 10 minutes after we arrived, the host brought us to a table. It was kind of him to remember our preference and work on that for us. Googling the restaurant later, I realized that the handsome host was co-owner Vinod Kalathil. He's clearly a wonderful business owner who knows how to make his customers happy. Unbeknownst to me that this place was named best new
Unbeknownst to me that this place was named best new restaurant by Infatuation as well as being named to the 50 best restaurants in the country by NY times. My chicken & cocktail weren't bad but to put them in the upper echelon of best things I've had is a stretch. The banana old fashioned had good balance but just not a ton of banana flavor. Chicken had plenty of seasoning but still felt linear. The sauce didn't add anything to the dish.
Low-Key, Good Setting, Excellent Value
Thattu is a keeper -- so say two couples having enjoyed a very pleasant dinner. Sharing the small plates meant tastes all around the varied menu -- exploration encouraged -- and the value is excellent. We'd recently enjoyed a highly stimulating trip to Kerala in India, making this an enjoyable reminder. The plain setting suits the industrial neighborhood -- street parking simple enough. A very pleasant surprise was the no-tipping policy with service priced in -- an appealing and preferred alternative to the gouging and undisclosed add-ons that have become increasingly common.
Excellent Indian cuisine!
Great Kerala cuisine! There’s some serious depth to each dish being served and upon leaving I immediately made my next reservation. We tried multiple curries, the beet pastry puff along with a couple desserts and everything was incredibly flavorful.
Regional Indian charmer
It took months to get this reservation! We finally got in by accepting a 5:30 pm time slot. When I mentioned this, we were told that lunch reservations (served Friday-Sunday) are easier to get. Thattu is in a repurposed industrial space west of the Chicago River in Avondale with exposed brick walls, high ceilings and polished concrete floors. It's well-lit and there are large white panels painted with colorful abstract paintings. It's a cheerful spot, Tables are well-spaced apart. There's a small bar. The menu is not large. It has codes to identify dishes which are vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free. We were cordially greeted by a co-owner and seated. We asked for paper menus and got them. Our server was friendly and helpful in explaining menu items. We ordered a couple of mixed drinks, one with alcohol and one not, and a couple appetizers: fried yucca balls (3 to an order) which he aptly described as being like deep-fried mashed potatoes. They were with a dab of red chutney. The other item was a bowl of mussels out of the shell in a curry sauce, much bigger and very tasty. We followed with 2 mains: tilapia steamed in a banana leaf with rice and a slaw that didn't have a lot of flavor and the pork chop in a vindaloo-like sauce but not very hot. The fish was good; the pork chop was outstanding: juicy and tender atop collard greens and a yucca cake. For dessert we shared a dish of sliced fried plantains in a thin creme anglaise. My spouse had flavored coffee which came in a tiny cup beneath a mound of flavored whipped cream. When the bill came, our waiter said the tip is already included in the price and it's shared with the kitchen staff. He seemed happy about the arrangement. Dinner for 2 with tax came to $126. We found free curb-side parking less than a block away.
Fantastic Kerala restaurant in Chicago
Fantastic atmosphere and amazing food. The Kerala chicken bites are my favorite menu item, but the "chaater tots" made with chaat masala were a revelation. I can't wait to go back and try some of the other dishes. This place and its lovely owners are truly deserving of all the industry accolades they have received recently, and I hope it sticks around for years to come!
Awesome find!
I’m half Indian and am So often disappointed by Indian restaurants. The food at Thattu was divine. The menu is small, but everything we ate was delicious! Nice open, modern space. Friendly service. What a find. I’ll be telling all my friends about this one…
New South Indian restaurant in Chicago
Great place! Great atmosphere! Food was delicious. Portion size it small though. But I quite liked the fact that service charge is included and we didn’t need to worry about that. Definitely will go back

Great Service - amazing dinner!!

Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!

I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!

LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.

Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
