Now do not misunderstand this review, my first visit to The Goring showcased moments of excellence and customer service. Sadly though our first time afternoon tea experience was a great disappointment. For weeks we had been looking forward for day away from the Shires and enjoy the best of London Town. We arrived at about 2.30 for our 3.00 reservation and most politely taken through to the welcoming lounge. Asked to sit....and so we did...and wait. After about 15 minutes I went to the bar to order drinks...it was waiter service and yes finally our order was taken. We could see empty tables...so at 3.10 i respectfully asked if our table was ready....me thinks we were forgotten as immediately taken to a table, unfortunately sited by the service desk (oh well). First impression not of the beautifully ornate China but on how chilly it felt. My guest kept her coat on throughout the service. It soon became apparent that the draught was coming from the door leading to the gardens, This had been left slightly ajar...it became apparent this door was being used for garden cigarette breaks, each time letting in the finest that the Artic can offer. Fine in Summer, but...now where was I, oh yes, a waitress came to our table at about 3.25, pleasant but certainly not 5 star. As we waited, it was easy to observe that certain tables were receiving more than attentive service, perhaps and unintentionally the adage that compensation follows behaviour is true. It was not busy so able to reflect. Was it the end of shift and staff tired....who knows, but we left the conservatory slightly deflated. Afternoon tea should be an experience, feeling welcomed and an escape from those everyday chores. However, and It is only fair to add, the waitress offered and we greatly accepted a goody bag assortment. Thank you. Before leaving the hotel for the misty murk outside, we took a peek at the restaurant. We were greeted by a most charming and delightful member of staff. She warmly explained items on the menu, and amusingly why so many cuddly sheep. Perfect, that was the Gorjng I wanted to enjoy. Would I return after the Christmas lights have been out back in their boxes, certainly, but to the restaurant.
