Peacefully gorgeous!
What a perfect place to explore the area. Away from everything, the peace and quiet is gorgeous. Warm and inviting, homely and personal. We loved it. A gin and tonic in the garden overlooking fields and hills was a perfect end to the day. Local bus to take you to keswick if you like, lakeside walks on the doorstep. A beautifully understated home.
Be the first to ReplyCould do better but staffing is a problem as in other establishments in Cumbria
One night stay. Firstly fab Location and great staff, food ok but not as good as billed. Strange old school food ordering regime. Especially far an advertised as a Michelin Plate Restaurant. Dinner service: all guests adhere to food service timing of arrive restaurant 6.30 for 7.00. Menu has no choice/ 5 courses + bread. They do inform you on arrival to let them know about Allergies etc and will of course accommodate accordingly. Had booked there because of info provided on there website about how their new Chef was improving the food offering by sourcing more local ingredients etc. Only to find out Chef had decided to leave and go to a another establishment locally that has a Star. Relieved in a strange way as food was not as good as was billed to be. Our room can only be described as comfortable. Furniture should be reviewed and replaced. Lots a chipped surfaces etc.Shower was good but Vintage Mira but very clean as was bedroom. Hotel building is old and beautifully kept main areas maintaining lovely features and combining some were nice and sympathetic modern additions. Bar area is stunning. Staff are excellent and in current employment climate the owners are very lucky to have them. Would not rush back but had an enjoyable stay as met some very nice guests from all over the world passing through which did make our stay. Breakfast you have to order the night before from either online or on a sheet of paper with various tick boxes. Sadly we did not get 50% of our original request. We did not comment as Tracy our fabulous server was run off her feet. So thank you so much Tracy your a star.

Was rather taken aback when told on arrival we would have to order breakfast the day before and done using a qr code. What a nuisance. Also no choice of menu and the food came in meagre portions. Bread was considered as a separate course! I appreciate fine dining but portions should have been more generous. Beautiful view from our bedroom and the bathroom was enormous, especially liked the whirlpool facility. Still hard to avoid the feeling that guests rather got in the way of the chef's gratification.
Be the first to ReplyLovely Hotel - 2nd Mortgage Required For Drinks
My wife and I stayed for one night for our first stay in this hotel. Lovely location and very nice lounge area and restaurant. Room was super clean and hard to fault really. The set menu of a single choice meal was a disappointment, I like to see some sort of choice when dining out! The waiters explained each course in exact detail but honestly, after a long day walking in the hills, we just wanted to eat. the food was ok without being particularly special and the portions were light. we had ordered champagne on arrival, had two pints and two glasses of wine in the late afternoon, a bottle of wine for dinner and then three each cocktails in the evening - the bill for the drinks was £289, which seemed overly high :(

Absolutely stunning views from room 4. Everything in the room you need. Room was spotless and also ensuite with bath and shower. Owner was lovely and staff friendly and helpful. Had to order breakfast in advance. Was a little disappointed that people were served their hot food before us and we were there before them. Think it's just me being picky. Lovely hotel and would recommend, it's an adult only hotel and very peaceful.

A simply beautiful hotel in the most beautiful location. The ideal get away. A peaceful space to relax and unwind with magnificent views. The rooms are fabulous. The food is amazing and the staff and service are first class. A special mention to Peter who made us feel welcome.
Be the first to ReplySuperb Food
Lovely hotel just off the main road but hidden away enough to feel tranquil and attract a wide range of wildlife.
Old building so expect creaky floorboards but bathroom was very modernised with jacuzzi style jets in the bath. Superb shower as well.
We were lucky enough to coincide our visit with a new chef starting as they try to aim for a Michelin star. Food was superb with excellent produce cooked to high quality. You get some lovely extra amuse bouches as well. Its quite intimate as everyone is seated around the same time so bare that in mind.
Bar was well stocked including a nice variety of local gins. Staff were all very pleasant.
Overall an excellent stay.
Faboulous find
We had a two night stay in this cosy hotel. We tried the taster menu and were very impressed with it. Breakfasts were also lovely. We stayed in the superior king room - with windows overlooking two different mountains. We were confortable, cosy and well looked after. Would go back again! The staff were very friendly and helpful despite one of the staff being treated unfairly harshly by a grumpy guest.

Yet again the team at Leatheshead manage to raise the bar in service and overall approach in how to make people feel special. Despite staff changes since our last visit the attitude towards all guests, especially ourselves, was first class. Even after our late notification off my wife's dietary preferences the chef went out of his way to serve a different dish from the set menu which was excellent. You should rightly feel proud of yourselves. Thank you.

Very different to the more conspicuous and larger Hotels adjacent to the Borrowdale Road. A very peaceful location and I'm sure in summer quite lovely. On a cool Twixmas it was the standard of service, quality of rooms and general comfort and warmth of the public areas that made our stay so pleasant.
Food was also very good, yes they have changed the Chef but I thought food was of a very high standard from mainly local ingredients, very well cooked and presented. Service was a tiny bit hit and miss as everyone was dining at same time. 2 nights out of 3 it was spot on.
Only minor negative was the cooked breakfast, not quite up to scratch on one morning and on two occasions there was a slight mix up of when porridge should arrive, preferably not at same time as Eggs Benedict.
However overall a very enjoyable and reasonably priced stay, will add to my list of favourites in the Lakes and hopefully return in better weather to more enjoy the grounds and location.
Disappointing food and accommodation
We were led to Leathes Head by it being in the Michelin Guide. We love food and travel widely to Michelin starred restaurants and anywhere with a good reputation for food. The Michelin Guide is only concerned with the food but, due to the restaurant’s location, a visit tends to need an overnight stay: so I’m reviewing both food and accommodation.
As the main draw for us was the food, I’ll leave that until last. The hotel is in a great location in Borrowdale with lovely views but sadly let down in a number of respects. The main one being it was absolutely freezing! I’m no lightweight on that front as we have a 19th century house ourselves which is so draughty your fringe lifts if you stand in front of the single-glazed sash windows. But Leathes Head was really, really, cold. Staff should have some clue about this by the fact their guests were wearing blankets (even at dinner) and topping the fires up themselves. I felt several radiators and all of them were turned up full but giving off tepid heat at best; suggesting the boiler was on a low setting. My other half wore a jumper and scarf to bed! At 10pm the bar closes, as do all of the doors downstairs on a timer whereupon there are no staff at all to be seen. Not quite the warm welcome we were hoping for on more than one front.
On to the food. I can only assume the chef warranting the restaurant’s entry in the Michelin Guide has now left as, I’m afraid to say, the food we had certainly isn’t up to standard. The appetiser was pleasant followed by scallop with compressed pickled cucumber and horseradish. Sadly the delicate scallop was completely overwhelmed by the strong pickling liquor and horseradish. The main course of ox cheeks was disappointing, being un-seasoned and lacking a sauce to bring the dish together; the small amount of rocket purée was insufficient and the dish overall dry and lacking flavour. We had an optional cheese course but this too was dry as it was served without any accompaniments to cut through the richness of the cheese and provide some ‘wetness’ to take the edge off everything being so dry. A ‘micro-dot’ of kombucha was served but impossible to eat being, literally, a dot. The pudding was a confused caramel parfait.
On a more positive note, the members of staff we met were friendly and welcoming; unfortunately let down by lack of comfort and quality of food.
Unique Hotel Experience
Lovely country hotel in a beautiful part of the Lake District . Comfortable room with a good en suite shower. The bar although small was good and the lounge was spacious and had excellent views of the surrounding countryside (binoculars provided). On arrival we were greeted and given a tour of the facilities with everything explained before being shown to our room. Breakfast was excellent with a good choice of options. Dinner was a taster menu, every course was explained and the food was to an excellent standard.
Be the first to ReplyCharming, great food and service, one heck of a view
We are on our way to Scotland and decided to stop one night in the Lakes, and decided on the Leathes Head Hotel. It was a slight detour and we are very glad we did. Charlie our host met us and apologised from the outset that he was covering on his own and to bear with him: he didn’t need to apologise. Everything worked beautifully from meeting in the bar at 6.30 to order drinks, to having a glass in the lounge where the fire enhanced the atmosphere, to a lovely light dinner. We can see why Michelin endorsed the kitchen. The menu is limited and some people might struggle with that, but from the amuse bouche, to the artichoke, then brill then blueberry dessert, before two chocolate petits four, we loved it. Sourdough bread also worthy of a mention. Astonishingly good wine list via Cortney and Barrow and mark ups reasonable, although limited choice by the glass which is expected in a small hotel. Comfy room and bed: very hot shower. We booked a mountain side view and boy did we get it. My wife last stayed in the Lakes 30 years ago and woke to thick fog and couldn’t see a thing. Not today. Stunning views. Breakfast is also great with plenty of choice. Good tea and coffee in the room. The team have adjusted well to Covid times. In summary, we loved it and highly recommend it.

Our favourite hotel for the last 24 years.
Disappointed with recent stay.
Paid top price for Room 11, this room is not on the website, cheap furniture very dated, tiny shower room and tatty.
Staff were great, very attentive.
Food was delicious but a fixed menu, no extra veg! Would have liked more choice.
Wine list should have a wider selection, top on price. I felt sadly hotel were being greedy.
We have had some great times at this hotel set in beautiful countryside but now feel it’s time to make new memories elsewhere.
Good Overall Experience
Stayed here for two nights as a treat, including dinner. Some things on the dinners were not to our taste, but it was good to try them. The breakfasts were very good, especially enjoyed the sausages and black pudding.
The staff were very busy and very friendly.
The room was a little tired in places and one of the pillow cases was dirty.
Overall it was a good experience.
Brilliant stay
Absolutely brilliant. Staff were very attentive and food was amazing. Room was so comfortable and very clean. They obviously take Covid seriously.
Definitely stay again and would recommend to everyone. If you’re looking for a hotel that accommodates your personal preferences stay here!!! Loved it and definitely coming back
