The Loyalist Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
Incredible food but intense atmosphere
Absolutely incredible food from start to finish. The service was very good bu tthe atmosphere was intense rather than relaxing as staff appeared under pressure to choreograph the customer’s experience.
Three star Michelin for a reason
A true culinary experience with a 15 course dinner. Very modern decor with an open kitchen giving at home feeling. Service is friendly, unformal and not pretentious. Very innovative. Right size portions to let you enjoy everything until the desert. The place is for foodies, not for showing off.

I had been dying to try the Loyalist after seeing their burger on several "best burger" lists for Chicago. Their cheeseburger is $25, which is a pretty high price for a cheeseburger. Given this, I was expecting something incredible, but I found the cheeseburger to be pretty average and definitely not worth $25. There wasn't anything wrong with it, I enjoyed it, but it just wasn't anything special, in my opinion. The ambiance of the restaurant is really cool and the service was excellent and fast. Definitely a lot of good things about the Loyalist and I would consider coming back to try something else on the menu despite the cheeseburger not living up to the hype.
Went to the loyalist to see what this burger is all about.
I Wasnt too impressed, and the chef seems to think k very highly of themselves. No substations, no changes. Does not appear they are here to feed customers, more like their own egos and deep pockets. The place is really dark and situated in a a basement with the smith being on the first floor. Typical restaurant ambiance, nothing to make them stand out. Paid street parking wasn't hard to find, but we went on Wednesday so might not be as easy on the weekend. The menu is very simple and I gather most people come here for the burger or to have a drink at the bar. We tried one of each burger. The French smash was not my favorite, the meat patty was super thin and the escargot (snail) sauce overpowered the flavor completely. I don't think escargot belongs on a burger. The OG burger was much better and the onions were very tasty. Was it the bet burger in Chicago? I think not, was it worth the price tag? I think not, but I did enjoy it The fries were good, similar to McDonald's fries but more crispy. Unfortunately our fries were way way over salted. Our service was good, attentive and she tried to be welcoming, it does appear that this chef or whoever designed the menu is a bit stuck up. No substitutions. And if you order the cookie god forbid you ask for ice cream, the chef doesn't allow it. If the food was better, one of a kind, I'd be more open to all the restriction but in the end the food wasn't anything revolutionary.
I had Jen as my server she was AMAZING .
Very attentive very knowledgeable of the menu and recommendations. I'll be coming back and referring my friends . She needs a raise for her excellent service

I went for Sunday brunch- I did appreciate they accepted reservations since it was so packed. We found this place by browsing Chicago eats on Reddit claiming it was one of the best burgers in Chicago. We got a table for two and I gotta say I have never been somewhere I was so uncomfortable; after 5 min I actually wanted to leave due to the stools being so awkward- I am 6,3 and couldn't lay my feet on the bottom foot rest bar and if I raised my feet for the top foot rest bar I lift and bump the table. I literally had to sit there with my legs swinging but thankfully the service was fast. The burger was really good actually I would rate it 4/5 and yes I agree it is a top contender for best burger in Chicago. The Benton's Bacon I did not like at all it had a mustard sauce with pecans we actually tossed- it was funky. 2 burgers + 1 order of Benton's Bacon + 1 soda with a $10 tip we spent $82.78 that is just insane to me. I will honestly never come back due to me being so uncomfortable and the price- it's a one and done for me. Great burger but I actually enjoy a double bacon cheese burger from Portillos with a side of cheese fries and a cake shake a lot more.
French smash burger seemed to rely too much on fancy butter
French smash burger seemed to rely too much on fancy butter and such than quality beef/bun and prices just seem too high across the board. Fries are just fine. Highlight was the knowledgeable and friendly bartenders and $5 Lone Star beers. I'd go back for the beer, but the vibe is a bit limited with 1 TV that isn't for sports.

After trying Au Cheval, I made it a mission to attempt o try all the highly rated burgers in the city. I've heard really good reviews about the Loyalist but honestly it was a let down. It is on the lower level of Smyth. It's a very vibey dark and intimate atmosphere, kind of reminded me of Au Cheval but more spacious! Since there were two types of burgers, we ended up ordering both the classic and OG to share. The fries were amazing.. tasted like an elevated McDonald's fries. And if you know you know McDonald's fries are the best fries. Let's start with the classic smash burger. First bite was already disappointing because the bun was so soggy. The meat patty itself felt really dry and not juicy. It did have a nice char but it didn't satisfy my cravings. Moving on to the OG.. I was most excited about this with the pickled onions and pickles but the flavors didn't really mesh well together. Same issue with the soggy bun and meat patty. Between the two, I would say the classic is much better just because it doesn't have contradicting flavors. Now they were not terrible burgers but maybe my expectations were too high. I feel like they are aligned with fast food joint burgers. Nothing too special and no wow factor. I was really bummed by the experience.
There are two things that I love: burgers and Old
There are two things that I love: burgers and Old Fashioneds. The Loyalist knocks both out of the park. Whether you go and get a classic cheeseburger or the Loyalist Burger, you're in for one of the best burgers in the city. Soft sesame seed bun, juicy patty cooked to a medium rare, crunchy, tangy pickles, and sweet grilled onions, it has everything needed for a perfect bite every time. The show doesn't stop at the burger, as their dessert menu has a spectacular surprise! Though we were not expecting a fiery end to our dessert, the Baba au Rhum isn't just a sight to see when it's served, it's also a sweet and citrus combo that leaves the dessert stomach satisfied. Book a table and enjoy the intimate, low-key atmosphere with their burger in one hand and drink in the other!
Disappointing.
Disappointing on multiple levels; do not recommend. Top three critiques: the food started to taste the same (akin to blended seafood in salt), took four “courses” and an ask to receive the martini I ordered, and a spelling error, which is “fine” if you’re not a three star Michelin restaurant.
Loved the vibe inside.
Dim lighting and spacious booths. Decided to split both burgers to see which one was better. The OG cheeseburger was medium rare with a nice char. The onion gave a good texture and the cheese was super gooey. The classic cheeseburger had a perfect smash patty. There was a great amount of char, tasty onions, and an unreal special sauce. The combo of the meat with the sweetness in the sauce made this the superior burger. My only complaint was that it wasn't a double patty. The fries reminded me of McDonalds in shape but lacked salt. The house ketchup and garlic aioli helped a lot. Finally, the chocolate chip cookie was amazing. Crispy on the outisde and soft on the inside, the brown butter enhanced the flavor. Highly recommend the classic cheeseburger over the OG.
Best burger ever anywhere
Oh my goodness not just the best burger in Chicago this is the best burger I have ever had. The loyalist burger with a beer and a shot it was absolutely incredible and the staff were second to none. I will be back this next time I am in town
What a way to kick start 2024 with this super filling and
What a way to kick start 2024 with this super filling and scrumptious meal. My husband and I decided to try the Loyalist as they had a good deal for NYE and I've heard so much about their burgers. Little did I know it was a 5 course meal!! We started off with cocktails, I got the Purple Haze which was refreshing and not too spirit forward. The first appetizer was a caviar crunchy toast which was so full of flavor. The next appetizer was a French soup which was hands down the best I've ever had. It was cheesy and warm. I had to stop myself from finishing it to make space for the next few courses. Next up was the refreshing lobster salad which was so creamy but light at the same time. The only reason for a 4 star rating is cause my prime rib was rare, and I was not asked how I like my steak. It came out chewy and I could not eat it. They were kind enough to ask for it to be replaced but I was so full. My burger on the other hand was super delicious and I would say the best burger in Chicago! We ended our meal with the baked Alaskan, I wasn't a fan of the outside burnt part but the inside was super tasty! Overall an amazing loungey dinner vibe full of amazing food and service!
Great basement brunch spot that resides under Smyth.
Relaxed service, solid cocktail offerings and a small yet varied menu definitely would bring me back again. Tried the spence egg and their well reviewed cheeseburger. I enjoyed the egg-simple hard boiled with a killer russian dressing. The burger-a fancified big mac without the additional bun did not disappoint. It was rich, salty and creamy. Definitely a great hangover dish. It was substantial and the $25 price tag was definitely a bargain for what you get. I wouldn't think twice on returning.
Would you like some steak with your sauce?
This review is for the Loyalist. I was so excited to come here since I heard nothing but positive reviews and the best cheeseburger in Chicago. WOW…so disappointing! First off we were sat at a high top table with the most uncomfortable bar stool I’ve ever sat on. With no back, no padding and no rungs to place your feet ( the lower rung was too low to reach and the higher one was like one inch from the top so it was like squatting). I think this was used as a medieval torture device. Anyhow, overlooking the fact that we were very uncomfortable I was hoping the food would make up for it…NOPE…I had the bistro filet, it was drenched in sauce that was not even good. I tried using another plate to dry off the meat, but even the meat was inedible, tough and dry (shocking since it was swimming in sauce). My husband had the “award winning” cheeseburger…omg…save the $20 and go to Culver’s and get a butter burger…so much better. The only saving grace were the fries which were some of the best I’ve ever had. The service was good as well, that’s the only reason for the “poor” rating instead of “terrible”. Also, the music was extremely loud we had to shout to hear each other. Just don’t get the great reviews, maybe I’m missing something. I would not go back and I would tell people to not go here.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!

LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
