Washington's Best Restaurants that are most frequently booked by customers of The Prime Rib Washington
😒 3/5 - Faded Glory

The Prime Rib used to be the best steakhouse in Washington. It opened in 1976, one of three locations (Baltimore and Philadelphia the others). Now, what is still good about the restaurant? The food is still mostly good, especially the beef. The atmosphere remains top-notch. The piano-and-bass players provides wonderful background music. And it is still, perhaps the only one in town, a restaurant that requires men to wear a jacket, although no longer a tie. They'll provide one if you don't have it. This I like. My view is that if I'm paying $55 for a steak, I want some atmosphere and do not want to sit next to a guy in cut-offs and a polo shirt, drinking Bud out of a bottle. So, clearly not for everyone these days.
So, what has gone wrong? In October of last year the owner and founder of the Prime Rib passed away. In declining health for a number of years, he had allowed some decisions to be made that were not in the best interest of his restaurant. Of course, no restaurant lasts forever, and 44 years is a very long time in the restaurant business. The main criticism I have is the Wine List. I like wine. One of the reasons I have gone to the Prime Rib for decades is for the outstanding wine, formerly heavily California selections. A former winner, annually, of the Wine Spectators "best" award. For the past year, the Wine List has been virtually non-existent. The ones posted online are laughable. Nothing close to what they have to offer when you actually sit down. And now, when you do go in and attempt to order off the Wine List, it is full of vintages different from the ones on the List! And not just one wine. Most of them. It is truly insulting that this fine restaurant once had pretentions - deserved - to know something about fine wine and offer up superb selections. And I'm not talking about a $30 bottle here. This is wines that sell for $100, $200 per bottle, and more. You simply cannot be indifferent to the vintage of such wines and pass them off as "all the same." And I fear that this is just part of a rot that is seeping into the restaurant as the former owner's estate is settled and they look for a way forward. Sad. So, if you don't love fine wine, I'd say go ahead. You'll get a good meal in a place that still has wonderful ambiance. But, if you want good wine, caveat emptor. Used to be 5 stars, now only 3 stars.
