Must try
Nice place for Sunday Funday or just drop in. The Whale has a lively vibe and great hospitality. 90s hip hop music was nice, they switch genres accordingly. “D” the manger was personable and cool. Every staff member I encountered was nice and friendly. Ordered Pimento Mac & Cheese, Shrimp tacos, Hearts of palm salad, etc. Everything tasted good. Must go back.

I revisited The Whale recently, and it was just as amazing as I remembered. Despite not having been there since early 2020, the vibrant atmosphere, friendly staff, and delectable food were still top-notch. I decided to try the Lobster Tacos, and they were absolutely delicious. The wait staff and hosts were exceptionally kind, offering fantastic recommendations and promptly seating us. It's a fantastic place to bring friends when they're visiting, and the unique decor and aesthetics add a special touch. Plus, it's a perfect spot for a memorable date night.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent choice for dinner
This establishment is an excellent choice for dinner or a gathering with friends over drinks! The atmosphere strikes a perfect balance between swanky and fun. The food is skillfully prepared and delightful to the taste buds. The desserts are also incredibly delicious. The outdoor seating provides a comfortable and spacious setting. The service is attentive and friendly, adding to the overall experience. I highly recommend this place to my friends.
Be the first to ReplyPoor service. Rude manager. Forced tip.
My husband and I went to Whale because we heard the burgers were good. Waitress took our order but we never saw her again until the bill. No refills nor checkups. Nothing. We were waving her down a couple times but no luck. We didn’t really care but When bill came we noted an automatic 20% tip on bill. Thought it was a bit odd given we had basically minimal service and that she really didn’t do anything for us. I asked that I write my own tip. She said no. I said I wanted to give 15% and she still said no. And she refused to change the tip. It was just odd. Manager came over and she also refused to adjust tip to 15%. We were basically forced to pay 20% for the waitress to take our order and bring the bill and nothing else. Manager then told us ‘this is America and this is how it’s done in America snd that all restaurants in Chicago do this.’ She was getting louder and condescending. My husband and I go out every weekend to probably over 200 restaurants in Chicago over the past 5 years and never had high tips forced on us. The burger and interior weee good but the service was not goat all and especially the manager came across as arrogant and forceful. Wouldn’t go back.
Be the first to ReplySurprise at the end
Went with a group of 8 on a Sunday evening to Celebrate a Birthday. Restaurant was busy but not full. We ordered some drink and appetizers and 6 of the 8 had dinner and the other two had an appetizer or salad. When the bill came. We were informed there was a spending limit which we did not meet and would be charged for it. Two deserts were ordered to go to made up the short fall. My complaint is no one told us about the minimum and I did not see it on the restaurants Web page. Food was good as was the service and the place was very attractive but the ending left us a little surprised. Lots of restaurants in Chicago. I don’t like being surprised. Will not come back. Also the music was played so loud you could not have a conversation
Be the first to ReplyFine, not great; has trouble with reservations
Dined here with friends. Not awful, but not a great experience. We had a reservation for an indoor table. We arrived to a totally overwhelmed hostess. Turns out, no interior tables were available (despite having reserved one), so we were seated outside…on a patio lacking covering…on a rainy evening. Not sure why you’d take reservations for tables you don’t have. Service was fine, but nothing special. Same applies to the food. Can’t say I’m excited to return.
Be the first to ReplyGlamorous and cozy
Loved their drinks, menu and service. Cozy and glamorous ambiance, attentive dishes with different influences. Grits and shrimp were amazing!
Be the first to Replyminimum spent
wanted to have a dinner here for my husband's birthday with a few close friends. was told there would be a minimum charge of 40 dollars per person as we were a party of 7 people. i feel like this is really off-putting. when inviting friends to a dinner to enjoy some time together and then telling them they have to spend a certain amount. how awkward. they did offer to knock it down to 30 but really the principle is all wrong. won't be bothering to go there. seems odd that they would rather have no business from us at all if we arent willing to pay 280 for the bill. wild
Be the first to ReplySunday patio treats
My mom and I stopped on a Sunday afternoon after visiting the farmers market. What a fun environment, and we loved the patio and music. She enjoyed a fruity mock tail and I had the frose. We also split a blueberry crumble, which was mouthwatering and a perfect sweet morning treat. Would recommend this place for brunch with friends or family in a relaxed, yet spunky, atmosphere.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food & drinks
I’ve been here twice for dinner with friends - once on a Friday night and once during the week. Both times the ambience has been nice and the waiters have been really friendly. We all loved the different cocktails. The appetizer of the spreads are really delicious. And the breads they provide with the spreads are buttered and slightly toasted and plentiful. Overall we all liked the food and service a lot, and I’d definitely recommend this place.
Be the first to ReplyImpromptu dinner
I found this restaurant randomly as I was looking for a nearby restaurant to have dinner with some friends because our original plan was to go bowling but it got canceled due to the charity event they were having at the bowling alley that night. When we got to the restaurant, I thought we would be turned back because we were dressed for bowling but it didn’t matter. The place was packed full and we were told that we would have to wait 1hr 30mins for a table for 5 but luckily for us they had a lounge area that could fit all 5 of us. The Whale restaurant is as beautiful as the pictures depict. An upscale restaurant for everyone. I ordered the steak frites and I love my steak well done and they didn’t disappoint. I also ordered a drink that contained pineapple with coconut milk and some other ingredients I don’t remember but it was very good. The cost to dine at this place was very fair as I expected it to be very expensive. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a casual or formal dining experience with friends, family or colleagues.

My colleague and I dined in at this restaurant and it was beautiful on the inside and the service was even better Jonathon and Kelsey were superb - Kelsey was my server and she was exceptional with great recommendations and Jonathon must had been our manager and he was professional and friendly.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious Food, nice atmosphere
We made a reservation and we’re quickly seated. The drinks and food all came very quickly. The cocktails and mocktails we had were all delicious, as was the food. I recommend the pimento Mac and cheese, steak and frites, and the Spread plates (with warm French onion spread). Service 10/10 Atmosphere 10/10 Food 10/10
