The Curse of the single diner strikes againI was in the mood to try this restaurant out as I've been eyeing it for a while. Unfortunately it didn't meet my expectations. I arrived later in the evening so all seats were taken. That's fine, I was expecting to have to wait. Maybe they were wanting to move people along as they offered me the option to sit in their sister restaurant next door (can't recall the name). Once in, most of the tables were full but I was guided to the high bench facing the rest of Emporium or another lower table (still with stools) next to the entrance or further back in the restaurant. I mentioned to the server that I had a bad back and that as the stools at the higher bench had a slight back I'd try them. When I climbed up on the stool I found that the bench was at around the height of my armpits. Just a tad higher than anticipated. I thought I'd see if I could be moved to one of the lower tables with stools (I wouldn't be surprised if it's a policy that single diners aren't seated at tables with proper chairs. It's something I come across way too frequently so the best I was hoping for was a table top closer to a usual level)I decided to order the Fisherman's basket to trial a variety of their offerings. I wasn't particularly surprised to be told they couldn't move me (despite the aforementioned alternative tables still remains vacant). My meal was not exactly quick to arrive. In fact the orders of the table of seven (?) behind me arrived before mine did. The fisherman's basket was served in three tiers. Hot food on the top, roll and canapés in the middle and prawns and oysters on ice on the bottomAs I didn't want my food to get cold I started at the top, lifting the plate off the stand as it was too high to comfortably eat off when on the high bench. Turns out I needn't have worried as the fish and chips were already tepid which sucked any appreciation I had for their preparation to the dregs Onto the prawns and oysters then. I lifted the plate off only to be splashed with ice cold water. The ice had melted (of course it had!) This water also spilt on the bench which meant that after a couple of minutes I had to contend with a constant drip of water onto my legs. I strongly suspect that my meal was made and then just left in the kitchen to cool/melt while others were served. Or that they plain forgot about me and where I was seated. To top it off, sitting on a stool and reaching up to eat caused my back to start to seize so I couldn't even finish my meal. When I departed the lower tables were still vacant. I don't foresee any circumstances that will get me to return here. I may be a solo diner and as such not as profitable as a larger group but not bringing food to the table when it's ready is poor service in my mind
