My cousins and their families treated me and my daughter to dinner at the Village Cafe, and it turned out to be one of the best gastronomic evenings during my visit to New York. True, we had to travel from midtown Manhattan to Brooklyn but, boy, was it worth the trip!
The cafe is unassuming and set back from Coney Island Avenue. I noticed three outdoor tables when we arrived and all were occupied. We had a table reserved for our families inside the restaurant. One thing noticeable immediately was that most of its customers are local. The service was attentive, courteous and efficient. We had some time to wait for our party to be complete so I tried their dovga (yoghurt and herb soup). it was served cold and perfect for a midsummer night. What a delicious soup! I would like to taste it again but warm on a midwinter night.
Our food for the night consisted of several types of salad (my favorite was the roasted eggplant salad), followed by the turkish liver and smoked mackerel with potatoes as appetizers (definitely the latter), and then culminated by a platter of various kebabs (go for the lamb ribs, lulya and liver...they were delectable!) I preferred the liver kebab over the turkish style liver, hands down. The lamb ribs and lulya were some of the best I've tasted. We ended our fabulous meal with baklava and another dessert (name escaped me); both were perfect capstone for an enjoyable food fest.
Did I neglect to say that we were there for four hours and the wait staff served us efficiently, graciously and gladly throughout the evening until we called it a night?! One tip: if you run out of wine or any apperitif/digestif, there is a wine and liquor store next door owned by the same owners of the cafe where you can buy more and consume them in the cafe without corkage fee.
