Ordered beef rendang for delivery.
Had to throw out one-half of the dish because they used cheap fatty beef. Just couldn't swallow big globs of fat. For the price they charge they could use leaner beef.

Made a reservation for two people on a Friday evening through their website. Nice decor inside with a multi-level setup for seating, as well as booths for cozier parties.Started off with the Roti Canai ($9.50) - a few pieces of savory sweet bread alongside a thick coconut curry. Perfect place to begin a meal and incredibly warming. For the main course, ordered the Redang Beef ($28) - huge chunks of steak marinating in a spicy curry. Despite the deep color, not overly spicy, though the side of rice helps. Some interesting options for dessert as well, but decided to pass for the night.Good service and laid back ambiance. Worth the price just for the comfort food on a cold day.

We walked-in to WAU on a Monday for lunch and the indoor and outdoor seating both are very inviting and looked comfortable. Their 4 person booths especially are very well placed - so if it's more than 2 people in your group, I'd recommend grabbing those! The place smells very "fishy" - a welcoming aroma for seafood lovers. We weren't sure of the portion sizes, but with a menu priced slightly on the expensive end (mains on an average cost $26), we decided to order mains directly and were glad we made that choice. We got the Murtabak ($18) and WAAAU Noodle with Tofu ($26) - both dishes were amazing - very flavorful and perfect level of spice. The presentation of WAAAU noodle was specifically waaauuu!Service was excellent - friendly staff, and food arrived within 20 minutes of ordering. Noise levels were on the lower side. Overall, great experience. Might visit again and will definitely recommend to friends and family craving some nice Malaysian food!

Spicy, flavorful, bold, and delicious. I want to come back and try more!! We ate in the outdoor area as a date and it was great. Highly suggest the laksa!

I was brought here by a native Malaysian who approves of Wau enough that he selected it for a large group he was hosting (he did manage expectations and qualify that there is no Malaysian food in NYC that is good as it in Malaysia or Singapore). There were 15 of us (which is the max the restaurant was willing to accommodate) and given the small size of the restaurant, I was surprised they were even willing to do that. Cozy spot on the UWS with a variety of Thai, Singaporean and Malaysian food. We were advised to steer away from Thai, which was easy to do as I was deciding between either the Singaporean Chicken Rice and the Malaysian Nasi Lemak. Having lived in Singapore I'm always craving and looking for a good Chicken Rice dish in the states, but given that I've never been able to find it, decided not to risk it and went for the Nasi Lemak, which I knew would be good (as it was recommended by the host). It was a great assortment of items (Coconut rice, rendang chicken sambal shrimp, salted peanuts + anchovies, hard-boiled eggs, cucumber) with a lot of flavor and had a good kick / spice. Others who ordered it found it to be too spicy but I have a high tolerance and would rate it a 3-4 spice level on a scale of 1-10. I polished off the entire plate if that tells you anything.Solid 4 stars.

Ambiance cozy but lively, but more important the food was layers and layers of flavor. Started off with the shrimp toast and chili wontons which were some great first bites! For dinner we had the Singapore Chilli Crab, which had so much crab to the point that I kept commenting on the volume of crab, and Singapore-style Char Kway Teow, which was a nice texture and savory contrast to the crab. HOWEVER, The star of the show was the lychee crème brûlée. The lychee popping bubbles brightened the cold crème, and charred sugar, I would go back for just that. Incredible.

Terrific food! Our favorite was the Rendang Beef! Definitely would come again - they even had it decorated for vday!
Be the first to ReplyMe and my wife had our Valentine day dinner here.
I heard good things about this place. The ambiance was beautiful. The place is very small however they do have outside sitting. Food was amazing. Our issue was that we felt the hostess and waitress were rushing us to finish up. Literally there was only 4 other couples and every other seats were empty. It wasn't even busy. We were told we can only stay a minimum of 1 hour, which is understandable, we only stayed for about 25 minutes. They didn't allow us to finish our food or ask if we want it to go.

The food is tasty, the menu is varied with something for everyone. The roti is delicious. The Wau noodle dishes were fantastic, we tried two different varieties and both were well received. The service and general hospitality could be more welcoming and a bit friendlier.
Be the first to ReplyWorst service ever.
Made us wait for 40 mins only to request us to wait for another 20 mins. Could have simply said no that it will not be feasible
Be the first to ReplyVery very tasty.
The lamb biryani tastes so delicate! Fried noodles were yummy also. I only wish it were spicier

Let me just be that corny guy who says "WOW" when they eat at Wau. The food and service are so good, and it's unfair that I have to travel to the UWS to experience this. The decor is really nice and chic; it looks like a place that should be filmed/used for TV shows about living in NYC. And the service was really great; I spilled water on the floor and they were so nice to me and my clumsiness. For cocktails, we ordered the Wau-lah and the Bubble Trouble; I loved the flavors of ginger in the both of them. For appetizers, we had the savory donuts and the wontons in chili oil; I've never tasted a chili oil so good and so robust. The savory donuts were filling and packed with meat and filling. The Chilean sea bass entree was a pleasant shock to my senses; it was light but so much flavor in the seafood sauce. At other places I've eaten, the sauce can have a watery quality with minimal flavor. But at Wau, it was at full power; I could have drank this as a soup. The dessert was the lychee creme brulee which was sweet and light, definitely necessary after the feast I had. I can't wait until I eat here again.
Be the first to Replyjust had the most wonderful dinner at Wau.
i was wow'ed by wau! (haha corny i know)breaking this review into a few parts: FOOD- food was honestly very delicious! we ordered the following dishes: 1. butter garlic prawns - this was my favorite dish of the night! it's deep fried shrimp and stir fried with chilis and crispy curry leaves. i would come back alone just for this dish. the shrimps were huge and fried to perfection. it was SO crispy and a lot of flavor profiles going on. it came out piping hot which is always a huge plus. must get app!! 2. roti canai - this was so good! so my fave roti canai is from nyonya (malay restaurant in chinatown) but i gotta say i think i might like this one more! this had a better consistency of crispy and chewy roti. cus some places make it so thin that it ends up just crumbling but this place made it perfectly where it was crispy but strong enough to not fall apart when you rip it apart and dip it in the curry. curry was good as welll - wish it came with more it was so good! 3. honey chili sambal chicken wings - the wings are hugeeee! flavor is good if you like sweet and spicy, reminded me of korean fried chicken wings. they were big, plump, juicy, crispy and flavorful for the main course we had:1. charred lobster tail with noodle - this was presented beautifully and so decadent! it did not disappoint. the lobster tail was large and cooked to perfection. it was charred perfectly with a nice char aroma. portion was a good amount didn't even finish all the noodles was so full! 2. roasted hainanese chicken - i was expecting regular hainanese chicken but def very different. this dish reminded me more of a cantonese banquets dish which is like a sweet soy fried chicken. it was still good but not hainanese chicken. dessert:if you love thai tea you will love this. i loved this dessert it ended the meal perfectly !! SERVICE-service was good, servers were quick and helpful. very attentive without feeling rushed. PRICE-this place is a bit pricey to be honest, certain dishes are expensive and some very reasonable as well. DECOR- everything was so cute ! ambiance was wonderful and it was very clean and i honestly just loved the decor
Be the first to ReplyCute date spot on the UWS.
I wouldn't say the food is the most authentic, but it definitely was tasty. We ordered the Garlic Shrimp as an app, Beef Redang and Mee Goreng as our entrees. The butterfly pea drink was so gorgeous and refreshing! The decor is stunning. I loved the vibes of this restaurant.

I will definitely come back not only for the food which is delicious but also for the service that Sean gave us. He is the greatest!!!

Was pretty excited to try out this place considering they have a few dishes that I was craving from my time in Indonesia but unfortunately it fell flat. Ordered the nasi goreng. I've never seen it served with shrimp chips.. Where are the tomatoes, cucumbers, and flavor? Literally tasted like basic fried rice and not anything close to Indonesian style. Disappointing, but I'll look to try other dishes in the future.

Fantastic addition to the Amsterdam Ave food scene, the pork belly is dangerously good. The spring rolls are light and far from the greasy sticks that are standard fare at many local Asian restaurants. We've ordered from here 10+ times and never been disappointed. Try the Nasi Lemak, it has a little bit of everything. The vegetable side with garlic sauce is also excellent, and kind of a must get as many of the dishes are meat only.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was probably 3 stars, but I am marking this down
The food was probably 3 stars, but I am marking this down for what I think is a serious problem. Our soup bowls were designed to have holes in them on the side. It's common to drink soup by lifting the bowl to your face, and the holes are small enough not to be obvious. If you happen to drink over one of these holes, your pants/shirt will get a lovely shade of turmeric. Please discontinue use of these bowls.Food: Roti Telur was served piping hot, very delicious combination. 4 stars.fried lotus root: way too much breading, and the chili sauce was too much. 2 stars. The Laksa was exactly what I expected, nothing very special about it. 3 stars. The lobster noodle also nothing special, 3 stars. As far as service, I also felt rushed, since my boyfriend was asked 3x whether he was done. He needed to stop eating to respond that he was not done.

We absolutely loved our experience at WAU! If I had to pick one dish that you absolutely cannot miss, it would be the roti canai. The flavor was incredible and by the end of it we were wishing we had ordered another serving. The savory donuts and rendang beef were just okay, but if we were to go back I think we'd try something else. If you go for a noodle dish, order the mamak mee goreng which was the perfect balance of chewy, salty and slightly sweet. The api-api cocktail was delicious, and their cocktail menu is extensive and interesting enough that I would come back to try more. Additionally, the service was perfect and our server was super attentive and friendly. Would definitely recommend this place if you're in the neighborhood!
Be the first to ReplyBeautifully decorated place, but it's a little overpriced
Beautifully decorated place, but it's a little overpriced imo. They have a lot of the common Thai and Malaysian dishes but way more expensive than usual. The dishes we got weren't special in any particular way other than being served in a cute wok bowl. We ordered the Mee Goreng, Fried Rice and drunken noodles. Portions were bigger than expected, so we had to take half of it home. For apps we ordered the spicy wontons and Roti Telur. The spicy wontons were so overpriced, $10 for 6 pieces?!? It wasn't anything out of the ordinary, def not worth it. The Roti Telur was a lot better and bigger portioned.
Be the first to ReplyI can't say we were wow'd.
I had my expectations set too high given the rave reviews. But: the crispy lotus root app was delicious, and I really enjoyed the Singapore black pepper prawns--but that's because I am Asian and I love the flavor of the head of the prawn. It was not to my hubs's liking. Mi Goreng and Savory Donuts were just okay for me. (Hubs really liked the savory donuts--too rich for my tastes)

I was completely wowed by Wau! Extensive menu and amazing ambiance. We had a group of vegetarians and meat eaters, and literally everyone was raving about their dishes.mamak mee goreng: do. not. skip. this dish. So many flavors in each bite, I've never tried anything like it Drunken noodles: safe option, still very good Clay pot tofu: salty braised tofu with veggies, personally I loved it but it is on the salty side Others in our group raved about the prawn, and the biryani rice.We ordered many rounds of drinks, bubble trouble seemed to be the favorite overall! We sat outdoors, although it was a bit cold, they tried their best to keep It warm.Fully recommend this spot for vegetarians and non veggies alike!

My friend found this restaurant on Tiktok and we were excited to try it out! Came here on a Wednesday night for dinner, they have outdoor dining but because it is winter it's fairly enclosed. They have a couple windows and they keep the door slightly open. For appetizers, we got the Roti Canai and Savory Donuts. The roti canai was delicious, the pancake was very light and airy and paired nicely with the dip. The savory donuts were very interesting, it almost reminded me of a tempura batter over a dumpling filling. Were very crispy on the outside and they didn't skip on the filling either. It was a little bit spicy but the dipping sauce (I think it was sriracha mayo) was quite nice. For entrees, we split the Nasi Lemak and the Mamak Mee Goreng. I had never tried a dish quite like the nasi lemak before, but I can understand why it's Malaysia's national dish. In one spoonful you add coconut rice, anchovies, slice of boiled egg, and fresh cucumber slices. The Mamak Mee Goreng was also great, you can't ever go wrong with stir fried noodles. For dessert, we got the Thai Tiramisu. This was honestly pretty underwhelming and for $15, I'd say that you can get better dessert in other places in the city. The ladyfingers were soaked with tea near the edges, but near the center were still fairly solid and hard to break apart. I think I would rather prefer just thai iced tea drink over this dessert.
