Z & Y Restaurant San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year
The food is great.
The reason this place doesn't get 5 stars is that on top of already relatively expensive food, they tack on a 22% hidden surcharge on your total. This would've made me reconsider coming here. On top of that, the service is not good. We were charged for something we didn't order, and I had to flag the waitress down to get it changed. In doing so she spilled my used chopsticks over myself. I also witnessed her deny another table tea (I assume they paid for) because they were done eating and she wanted them out asap. This place really felt like they were trying to nickel and dime you every step of the way I'd like to also mention that Obama DID NOT go in here. The owner loves to mention that, but he went next door.

If you are a Chinese or a person of Chinese origins, then I would choose most other restaurants in Chinatown. For being a Sichuan restaurant , not one thing tests spicy, and I can only taste the numbness. They also make dishes that are supposed to be spicy into dishes that taste as sweet as orange chicken. Everything here is designed for a western, nothing tasting really traditional. I would say if you are a Chinese or an American looking for real Chinese food, then try somewhere else like R&G lounge or something. Of course if you like to eat Panda Express and dishes that are designed for Americans, like orange chicken, then you will love this place! I will leave it to you to decide.
I recently dined at this restaurant with my girlfriend, and
I recently dined at this restaurant with my girlfriend, and frankly, our experience was abysmal. We ordered three dishes and were shocked by the meager portions. Unlike other restaurants where we struggle to finish two dishes, here we easily polished off all three due to their insufficient size. The quality of the food was equally disappointing. Notably, the frog dish had a distinct sourness, indicating it was far from fresh. This was unsettling and fell far short of our expectations for a decent meal. The dining environment compounded our dissatisfaction. The restaurant was infested with flies, which is not only a gross inconvenience but also a blatant disregard for basic hygiene. This alone was enough to ruin our meal. To add insult to injury, the restaurant imposes an 18% mandatory service fee, which is outrageous given the subpar service and poor dining conditions. The audacity to include an additional tip section on the bill was beyond the pale, considering the dismal experience we endured. In summary, this restaurant was a complete letdown in every aspect--from the inadequate food servings and questionable quality to the unhygienic environment and unreasonable billing practices. I strongly advise against dining here; it's a total disappointment.

Was craving good Chinese and I knew SF was the place to scratch the itch. I ordered the hot sour soup which was beyond excellent. I will be dreaming of that soup for months. Also ordered some pork dumplings which were soft and delicious. My friend had the beef dish, and I had the spicy eggplant, which was also amazing. Portions were so large! It was a really busy restaurant and we were glad to have arrived as early as we did to avoid the lines.
Tea smoked duck, $37 for half a duck online, seems pricy
Tea smoked duck, $37 for half a duck online, seems pricy for half. Taste wise good smoke smell. Slightly on drier side. Dong po pork shoulder, fat melty, but meat and sauce could use more flavor, not salty enough. Cumin lamb, good, flavor same as last time, but the lamb pieces not as dry/crunchy, which I prefer more dry. Couples delight, good, thin sliced meat, great flavor, good amount of onion, cilantro, garlic, celery.
Amazing food!!! salt and pepper shrimp was our favorite
Amazing food!!! salt and pepper shrimp was our favorite the used to have salt and pepper wings that where to die for!!!
Not fancy, but good food
We arrived on a Friday night around 5:00. There already were several tables and the dining room filled up by the time we left. They have limited tables for two, so we were seated at a four top. The decor is mediocre. It is nothing fancy, but not a hole in the wall. The server took a bit to approach the table. We did receive water first. The food arrived in a timely manner. I had the Tea Smoked Duck. It was really good. Mice size portion and very flavorful. My wife ordered the Honey walnut Shrimp. The presentation was cool. It was smoking. The shrimp was very tasty. This is a pretty good place to dine in China Town.
I use to love this place, but now, if you'd like to pay
I use to love this place, but now, if you'd like to pay $151 for 2 dishes which are not tasty at all, this is the place to come. They told us it's fresh alive fish, hell no it definitely wasn't, what a lie, the $58 fish was fishy as hell. We specifically ordered one rice, made sure we only wanted one rice as one of us doesn't eat rice at all, they brought 2 and charged 2 anyway. The waitress was rude too. Will never return. No other places charge $12 for tea, it's at most $2 per person.
Food was spectacular.
It was super busy, but we were seated quickly and food came out promptly. Everything was fresh, the flavors were amazing! Our favorite was the Moo shoo pork and creamy walnut shrimp.
We wanted to love this place because it has been on the
We wanted to love this place because it has been on the Michelin guide for a decade and even Obama visited. However, we didn't know what was the correct thing to order and we didn't love place. The broth dumplings were so flavorless and no broth was inside. We were so excited about the duck but its flavor is not for everyone, so that's on us. The spicy gyozas, chicken and fried rice were good but I think you can't never go wrong with that. We talked to some Chinese friends and they told us we ordered the wrong things, next time maybe the best option is to let the waiter recommend what to order
Idk why help is not giving this place more hype I mean it
Idk why help is not giving this place more hype I mean it literally got noticed in the Michelin guide and it slaps. Showed up part of 4 on a Saturday night around 8 and we got seated in like 15 minutes which was not bad! We did this family style and this menu slaps. Started off with some tan tan noodles and the xiao long bao. The noodles were excellent as were the dumplings. We also got the string beans and honestly these were a sleeper pick because they slapped!!! For the main we did the mapo tofu and got some sides of rice. Only complaint about the tofu was I wish it was a little less soft but overall this food was great. We left feeling super happy with our choice and cannot recommend this more!!
Happy in China-town
The food was fabulous (green beans, spicy dumplings, spicy seafood pot, shrimp fried rice), the service was excellent (tag-team gals who never let us down), and great prices. The four of us would definitely go again would recommend whole-heartedly. Go before 6 if you don't want to stand in line... Yep, it's that good...
Delightful!
Excellent Chinese restaurant, located in the center of Chinatown. The menu is very varied and the dishes are very generous, so it's best not to take too much and share. We had the Wonton Soup, orange chicken and prawns, all excellent. Warning: spicy dishes are very spicy! Right price. Better to book.
Good, but not that good
A friend suggested we go here for dinner, so we went there during the middle of the week. It wasn't very busy. Only when I got there did I notice they have a Bib Gourmand rating from Michelin. After checking over the menu, we decided to get the following: - Beef with Flaming Chili Oil - Very good. I think it was the first time I ever had this dish. I was a bit worried that it would be too spicy, as I'm somewhat sensitive to spicy dishes, but this was absolutely fine. I really enjoyed it. - Mu-Shu Pork - Good. Well made, good flavour. No complaints. - Dry Sautéed String Beans - Good dish. No complaints. - Spicy Xiao Long Bao (Soup Dumplings) - Not good. They were over-steamed, so the soup escaped from the dumplings. By the time we ate them, they were too dry. - Pancake with Beef - Good. No complaints. Service was typical for a Chinese restaurant. Friendly enough. Overall, it was good, but nothing particularly outstanding. I've certainly been to several Chinese restaurants of the same quality (or better) without Michelin ratings/recommendations. Is it a good, safe place to go - yes. Is it worth going out of your way for? No. I would rate 3.25 out of 5.
Wish we hadn’t bothered
We had seen reviews on this place so were hopeful of a good experience. Not so! We only waited about 10 mins for a table and 10 mins to order but… first they brought the egg fried rice ($16!!). 5 mins later the starters! Told them to take away the rice to serve with the mains. 2 mins later the mains arrived! We hadn’t even received cutlery! It was rush rush rush. The chicken kung pao was ok the chilli lamb must have had 50 chilis in it! I love spicy food but the chewy lamb could have been anything as the only taste was chilli! The bill was thrown onto the table before we had finished the mains - no-one asked if we wanted anything else. Terrible service, very average very expensive food. 4/10
The "spicy" Flavor of China.
In the Chinese district of San Francisco, among the various proposals, this turns out to be a very valid solution. Extremely tasty food, nice varied menu from vegetarian to fish to meat. First and second courses of the Chinese tradition. Warning: many things are EXTREMELY spicy! Fast and hasty service, valid prices! Recommended, and booking recommended!
A bit of a hidden gem in Chinatown
We had to wait but it was worth it, we were sat outside which was good as it was a warm day. This restaurant does not accept tips it is built into the cost which we liked. The service was a little slow as they were busy and we were outside. I asked for the won ton soup to start but unfortunately it was not available on the day we visited. We went for the duck which was lovely and there was lots of it! We also had the Spicy Beef clay pot which was definitely spicy!
Overpriced
Overpriced. Food is good but not extraordinary. The ambiance in the restaurant is old and tired looking. They rest on their laurels of days gone by and outdated Michelin reviews. Lots of other excellent options in Chinatown at more reasonable prices.
Very good Szechuan cuisine
Excellent Szechuan kitchen in San Francisco! Very authentic ! We had a great dinner, comparable to our dining experiences in Asia
Worst experience ever
Soup we wanted was not available. Chicken soup was water and pieces of chopped chicken. They let us pay 7 USD more Chicken with soy was withou rice or anything 28 usd. On top of the bill comes 20 USD additional costs
