Bottom line for any review is whether or not I would return. Yes…..I would.
We visited during a “Restaurant Week” promotion because it was such a good deal. $39 for a three course dinner. So, in fairness to the restaurant, we don’t know whether or not our meal would have been better if ordering from their regular dinner menu.
The service was, at times, incredibly attentive and fluid, while at other times we felt completely ignored. Attribute that, perhaps, to the general lack of staffing that all restaurants are suffering with these days.
Ambience was modern and sleek, but lacking warmth and was moderately comfortable. Staff were all very nice and friendly. A good place to spend an hour or two, but maybe not three.
Let’s focus on the food……
Caesar salad was very tasty, non traditional recipe which included (I think) chopped chives. Not much cheese detected. We gave the salad 8/10
All guests receive fresh baked popovers served with soft butter and a salt shaker. Delicate crunchy perfection filled with wispy pillowy soft hot bread. I couldn’t imagine a better version. We’re tough critics and both awarded a perfect 10/10. Quite possibly the star feature of our dinner.
If you read the menu it claims to offer both Prime and Angus quality beef. I’m not sure which steaks are Prime, but ours weren’t. Angus is a very good type of Choice quality beef, but it’s not Prime. The main difference is textural, though slightly with taste too. The Angus beef had a significant “chew” rather than the “melt in your mouth” characteristic of a true Prime steak. Still, our strip steaks were delicious and enjoyable. Rating 8/10
Let’s talk about wine……
Wine is important, especially when eating steak. This is an area that could use a little improvement at BLT Steak. Speaking for a moment about the economics, the vast majority of wines are above the $200 mark. There are barely a dozen below $100. Although there is a decent “wine by the glass” option, it’s not the same as enjoying a full bottle of something unique. Notwithstanding the above, there is still something for everyone, just would be nice to see more. That said, if your wallet can handle it, you will find many wonderful examples of oenophile treasures throughout the extensive list.
Dessert was truly delicious. Pana cotta was light and refreshing. Ice cream sundae on par. Coffee was excellent (not always the case in some restaurants) and served with warmed milk. Rating 9/10
There are countless steak restaurants in NYC. This is a contemporary take compared to the traditional style clubby types. Would have been 5 stars if the steak was Prime. There must be incredible competition between restaurants to get their own fair share of the top quality beef. BLT Steak is raising the bar for Angus, but it’s still not Prime.
