Foster's Kitchen Kailua-Kona Reviews from The Last Year
Not impressed
Tried it based on reviews and would not go back. Felt the food was just ok given the prices. Happy Hour not a great deal compared to other places.
This is the BEST restaurant in Kona, Hawaii.
My wife had the crab cakes, and a pineapple sherbet for dessert. I had the blackened fish sandwich with a side order of mashed potatoes, with butter. This is our third visit to this fine restaurant. Terry was our server, and she was the best. The atmosphere is the best. My blood pressure always goes down, with a trip to Foster's Kitchen.
Great service and great food.
My wife got the 6oz sirloin and I got the fried chicken. We were not disappointed. Their gravy was amazing and the collard greens were surprisingly great. Our waiter, Alika, is the man. He really made us feel like locals and even family at times. Made sure we were taken care of. Funny dude and super hospitable. We'll definitely be back next time we come out.
We've been going to Foster's for a couple years now
We've been going to Foster's for a couple years now whenever we came back to the Big Island. Our favorite meal is the Cajun shrimp pasta, the dish we always order. The portions were always ample and both my husband and I always took about half our meal home or we would share one plate. It was a decent price before Covid at about $18 but when we went the other night, the price had jumped to $30 and the portion was halved. Jumbo Shrimp cost about $1 each and pasta is cheap. The meal probably costs about $10 to make. I get that prices have gone up but this is ridiculous. The meal was still very good but we will probably not be returning after an $80 bill for two meals and two drinks. On a side note, the hostess was very nice and our waitress, Lane (Laney?) was really great.

Can't speak to what dinner service would be inside but very disappointed with online takeout order. They clearly forgot I had ordered something and seemingly started it when I arrived since they said they couldn't find it in the system suggested just had ordered it from Kona instead. Then they said they were just "packing it up". That was about 25 min before I got my order. Saw one other party get up and cancel their order while waiting. No offer to make it right. Just a late order, hungry kids, and excuses. I know the restaurant business is difficult. I just wish the house staff had been up front with my family.
Prices are overinflated

We love Foster's.
The menu is fantastic and the food is so fresh! We also love the view!
Slow, slow, slow.
Incredible slow service. Drinks from the bar were slow and still waiting for food at the 35 minute mark. Who knows when it will come. And that’s with lots of tables empty.

Michael was a wonderful server, and my friend and I had the best experience here. Super delicious dinners (shrimp n grits) and dessert (bananas foster). Quite lovely, and we didn't have to wait in the early evening.
Delicious food, even better environment and the cherry on
Delicious food, even better environment and the cherry on top for us was our amazing server Lynda. I Would come back for her smile, service and ahi stir fry! Great happy hour and pricing!

Food was delicious, server was helpful and the view off the patio was a beautiful ocean sunset. I ordered Cajun fries and the steak salad without Gorgonzola cheese and added goat cheese and chili vinaigrette. Great gluten free option for me and I cleaned my plate!
The waiter needed customer service skills.
The front hostess was wonderful. The food was acceptable. Our waiter was disinterested and rushed and did not offer us drinks and brought all the courses at once. He said he had other customers and no time for us. I usually don’t complain but this was not a great experience for our last night in Hawaii. The restaurant was busy but not overwhelmed.
Food was awesome and we were glad we tried it.
We're locals and have shied away from Alii drive but this was a pleasant surprise. Paying to park was a little time consuming but not the fault of the restaurant. Good experience with excellent service too.
Quite possibly the worst dining experience my family has
Quite possibly the worst dining experience my family has ever had. Visiting for a week long vacation, and my family brought everyone here after having a previously great experience. From the moment we hit the host stand we were greeted with the most unfriendly service possible from the hostess. She did not greet my family nor even hide the fact that she clearly was not in the mood to provide any type of customer service. I will say we arrived roughly 45 minutes before they closed to try and were understanding of that. Our server was also incredibly short and also very clearly not in the mood to provide any type of enjoyable service. We ordered 3 appetizers due to some of the dishes we were interested in not being available (understanding due to the time), and then decided to order a couple salads. One of our appetizers was burned and tasted awful, the other two were decent. Our salads were lackluster - and by this point our dining experience was totally ruined and no one cared to finish our food. We waited nearly 10 minutes for our server to come back so we could cash out before one of our party members decided to try and ask the bartender for the check. The bartender did not even acknowledge him while he stood there waiting for a couple minutes when our server finally came from the kitchen and we checked out. While it is understandable to have had a long day/evening, it is unfortunate that a table of customers who has been raving about this restaurant brings someone here and receives this type of experience. Really a disappointing meal with the most unfriendly service imaginable.
We wouldn't go back
We came here because of the great reviews and it was busy so we booked ahead. To be honest, it wasn't a great start with a robotic hostess taking us to our table. The the waiter seemed to be in a real hurry. We'd only just sat down and he'd asked if we wanted drinks (which was fine) but then he wanted to know if we had decided what to eat and we hadn't even had a chance to look at the menu, so we asked him to give us five minutes. He was back asking us if we wanted to order yet in less than two minutes and before our wine had arrived so we asked for more time....he gave us about 30 seconds. We felt so under pressure that it wasn't relaxing at all. The food took a little while to arrive, which is fine when its cooked to order, but as is often the case here, it was lukewarm and borderline for being sent back. The flavours were great and the portion sizes were good but the whole experience was spoiled by the feeling that they just wanted you out of there. There are definitely better places to go here.
Food was delicious and service was great.
Beautiful view of the ocean and sunset. I got the steak which was done a perfect medium, just the way I wanted.

The ocean view, open-air second floor seating, and robust menu are highlights of Foster's Kitchen. There were numerous items on the menu I would have loved to order but I settled on the Garden Salad adorned with ono fish. The entree was delicious as were the accompanying macadamia nut encrusted goat cheese balls. Our waitress, Jacq M, was super friendly and effective. Highly recommend!

Good food and service, as well as a great location with a fantastic view. Most items on their menu are good and for the area the prices are reasonable.
Excellently executed dinner tonight! Goat cheese
Excellently executed dinner tonight! Goat cheese Bruschetta- 10/10 * I typically despise goat cheese Split the rib chicken combo with wifey. Accompanied by garlic mashed and steamed (well seasoned) veggies. Firm but yielding as I prefer. Ribs- Best ribs from a restaurant in years. I live 50/50 CA & TN, 9.8/10 Chicken breast- Moist, flavorful. Really impressed 8/10 Sat at Bar, Holly and Henry delivered drinks quickly, properly gave sound advice to the menu from a personal perspective. Seriously impressed with both front and back of the house. Henry, Holly; you shined brightly and were so appreciated!
Had a late lunch with wife and was very nice.
We shared a crab cake and fish taco entree. Both were tasty and filling. The price was reasonable (especially during happy hour). They even offered free parking for 90 minutes. So don't pay to park online before you ask the restaurant. The views are phenomenal
Disappointing
Parking is validated which is nice. But that was really the only positive. Drink tasted watered down. Food was average. And service was inattentive.
Michael and FK= the best
Michael was the best server we have ever had. The food is INCREDIBLE. Went twice in 2 days- amazing ….. food was so solid and worth every single penny.
Excellent food and service
Happy Hour drinks were fabulous! Highly recommend the stuffed mushrooms and crab cakes. Jonah, our server was the epitome of great customer service, which today, is rare. Would return here if in Kona again!
Good food, lively atmosphere
Good food and friendly service. The pasta is good and we have always enjoyed their fish dishes. It is very noisy, buy that kind of goes with their vibe.
I house is good. Forget takeout or pick up.
Used the Foster's Kitchen web site to order online for pickup. Set the locale to Kailua Kona and put in the order for pickup after 2:30. Got to the restaurant and they had no record of the order. They suggested we drive up to Waikaloa to see if they had the order. They did not offer to call Foster's in Waikaloa or check their online ordering system to verify if the order was placed. We got home and I checked my card and there was the charge with the locale of Kailua Kona. Then checked email, found one from Foster's Kitchen stating pick up of Waikaloa. They should not offer pickup for locations they do not support and need to improved customer support, and fix their software to unsure location is correct.
Was all excited. Then Not so Much!
U have heard good things about Foster's Kitchen, so we were pretty excited about going. We started off by ordering drinks. Our guest with us ordered a Sangria drink that she didn't drink because it tasted like soap. I ordered a Blue Hawaii. Afterall, we are in Hawaii, but the Waitress said "I don't think we make that." My thought was, really. Every restaurant down this street serves a Blue Hawaii. She checked and was told they can make it, but it was almost tasteless, very sad. My wife had fish tacos, and they were good, I ordered steak and shrimp. The steak was tough and chewy, and cutting it was a challenge. I also had mashed potatoes. They were cold and dry. The Waitress replaced them with warm, dry, stick in your throat mashed potatoes. I will not beat a path back again.
Our favorite in Kona
This was our favorite dinner while we were in Kona. The food was great (fish all around) and the service was wonderful. Michael was a kick in the pants. The view was wonderful too.
Very slow and over cooked fish.
This was the worst restaurant we have eaten at in some time. It was very slow. Took 15 minutes to have someone show up with water and then at least an hour for our food to come from the kitchen after we ordered. The food was extremely overcooked. Had dried out fish in fish tacos and very dried out fish and chips. I would not recommend this place. There are other places much better than this in Kona.
