Harbourside Ocean Bar Grill Auckland Reviews from The Last Year
Beware! CC numbers stolen from the bar staff.
Met friends at the bar for a couple of drinks in the afternoon. Had to leave my credit card at the bar and started a tab. Everything seemed normal until the next day. That is when VISA fraud department called and asked if I spent more that $1000 at Best Buy on-line. I know the bartender stole my CC numbers because this restaurant is the only place I used that CC. It is a shame that the restaurant employes people that commit blatant fraud.

I didn't find this restaurant extraordinary, menu is limited to what I like. The view is superb that was the positive.
Go Anywhere Else
Our first night in Auckland and we were looking forward to a lovely dinner on the waterfront. The setting outside on the balcony was very nice. But the food was a huge disappointment. Our lettuce salad (large enough to share) came with a very bland vinaigrette no tastier than water. Even the Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc was lackluster. My husband's lamb chops were OK, but my fish pie was absolutely awful. It was nothing more than two cups of mashed potatoes and cheese, with maybe 12 peas and 4 bite size pieces of snapper. I spooned the potato glop onto the side of the plate, ate the snapper and peas and went home hungry. By far our worst meal traveling for 21 days in Australia and NZ.
Setting was nice by the cruise ships.
Food delicious and our waiter from France was outstanding. We recommend giving it a try.
terrible service.
actually walked out. they say us and had us there 20 minutes without acknowledging us to order anything. I think this was first time I have ever walked out of a restaurant!
Great food & Great Service
This is a white tablecloth and cotton napkin restaurant which was exactly what we wanted. The meet and greet was excellent and we started with a couple of cocktails, I can particularly recommend the Mexican Mistress if you like it hot😉. We didn’t have a reservation on a busy Saturday night but we were seated within 20 minutes. This gave the opportunity to have more than one Mexican Mistress🤣🤣. The Oysters were excellent and the pan fried Snapper was to die for! We loved being able to see the kitchen and the ‘pass’ from where we were seated. It was like watching a well oiled machine. Well done to the chef and his team. Great last dinner in New Zealand👍
Very good restaurant
We chose this restaurant because the reviews on TripAdvisor were very good. It is located at the port. The restaurant is quite chic. The food and service were very good.
Give this place a miss…
This is rated one of the better restaurants in the area, we were looking forward to it. Unfortunately it was a huge disappointment. The food was very good but the service was horrible. Severely understaffed. When we were asked about our experience by the manager, we let him know. His excuse? They let too many people in for the staff they had on that night. Really?
Very disappointed- the restaurant inside was empty.
Outside was 65% full. Host told me they were full - he didn't want to seat me at all then told me it would be 1.5 hours - this was a Monday. There were lots of side tables - bar seats. Decided to leave based on 1-atmosphere being weak 2-host being RUDE. Vibe - old, boring, stuffy - decided to leave and go to Soul and very happy I did - amazing service, great vibe, sat within 15 minutes and it was packed.
Chowder was awesome
Great view over the harbour, our French born waiter was excellent and went over and above with filleting our fish making sure we got the cheek meat for example. At seafood restaurants my go to starter is the chowder , this is possibly the best chowder I have eaten. Full of seafood and potato and totally delicious . Excellent dinner rounded out by a lovely Marlborough Sav Blanc
Great for oysters
Excellent oysters and seafood stew, great service by Merryn, great te mata wine from hawked bay. Probably our best restaurant experience in Auckland
Great harbour views from balcony
Great to sit and watch the activity in the harbour sipping a top notch Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc on a summer’s day from the first floor balcony. There is a huge wine selection, and great beers. A bar area (not table service) is available overlooking the harbour. Bar staff were friendly and helpful. Top notch place. Enter from the road up the stairs rather than harbour side.

The restaurant has a very nice outdoor eating area that over looks the harbor. They also have a bar area inside for dining. I had the fish and chips. It came with two large pieces of fish in a very light batter. They had tartar sauce and vinegar if you needed anything else for the fish. The fries had a Parmesan topping. That was a nice touch. My wife had the seafood chowder which had shrimp, scallops and potatoes. We shared an order of shrimp mac & cheese. It was excellent. The service was outstanding from start to finish.
Very disappointing
We went to Harbourside to celebrate my husband's birthday. The service was extremely slow and when our food did arrive some of it was burnt. It was a real let down, we had been looking forward to it and left feeling very disappointed. It wasn't just us, we heard several others from nearby tables complaining about the service.
Good seafood and nice location.

Excellent food and attentive service (our server was Ethan). The small seafood platter had a variety of hot and cold seafood including tasty roast prawns, steamed mussels, fresh sashimi, raw oysters and tender squid, all beautifully presented. The poached salmon was incredibly tender and moist. Seated at a table across from the semi-open kitchen, we were mesmerised by the teamwork of the kitchen staff in fulfilling the food orders. Each dish was put together by a team, like an orchestra of different musicians creating a musical piece. There was a Coordinator (I think named Santosh) who kept an eye on each dish as it was being completed and ensured prompt and accurate delivery of the right order to the right table. Bravo to the staff!

We both had fish & chips ($32) and unwittingly ordered a $12 bottle of still water (didn't quite catch the difference between the free tap water and the costly bottle and the maitre'd wasn't clear. We also had a very good $13 glass of (alcoholic) apple cider and another $12 bottle of sparkling water. The view over the water is magnificent if blinding on a mid-winter's day. Even lowering the darkening shade didn't help, so I wore my hat during most of lunch. The fish... magnificent. Some of the best I've ever had (and i'm English AND I lIke exploring different fish fries on offer during Lent, so I know my fish). They used snapper, not cod, and they get their fish fresh off the docks at 4am each morning. The batter is incredible as well, which made for a crazy good fried fish. Improvements I would suggest: Provide more than that tiny little.bowl of vinegar. One, the quantity is wholly insufficient and two, who can accurately pour from a cup with a lip half as wide as the bowl itself? It all lands on the plate, not the fish. You provide more tartar sauce than vinegar... no. I tried dipping my chips in it, and... no. Too small. That salt cellar is an injustice. You clearly invest in high quality salt, but the flat, open dish in which it is displayed made me shudder. I envisioned fingers in it, people even dipping food in it... ew. I get that people run off with tiny little spoons if they're provided to dispense the salt, which gets expensive. If you want to use those little dishes, I'd put it on the table after the guests are seated and have the server murmur "Fresh salt for you..." Inquire if the guests would like ketchup. Sometimes people are too embarrassed to ask, and I imagine you have a fair number of Americans coming through. To bring it to the next level: Make your own ketchup in the summer and bottle or freeze enough for the year. House made ketchup is a joy everyone should experience, but sadly few do. Maybe also keep a couple bottles of Heinz in the back for those who simply cannot experience condiments without high fructose corn syrup. Add more cream to the mushy peas. Offer a choice of chips: the traditional "pencil" shape or thick cut. Personally, I'm a thick cut kind of person. All in all, a very good lunch.
