JAMALS in MIDDLESBROUGH Reviews from The Last Year
One hour wait
Long trip from Coventry on a sightseeing around Middlesbrough and seaside nearby. Hotel near this restaurant. Lots of space but waiter said has 4 tables to serve first so we will have to wait for one hour. Four tables to serve I noticed one table already had their meals and other 3 had 2 people per table. I did not wait and informed cannot wait one hour and walked out. First visit here and will not be coming back as lost confidence.
A must curry visit
Oh my days how can one person do so much and still deliver a wonderful curry. The decor is dated but it’s all about the food and you know what its worth the wait. The fact that it was busy meant that we have a really casual night and was good to not be rushed. Massive thanks for a great evening and looking forward to coming back next time we are up in the area.
A jewel in the centre of Middlesborough!
Whilst staying in the centre of Middlesbrough, we discovered Jamal’s on Corporation Road … a true jewel in the town. A very comprehensive menu awaits to tease your tastebuds & a very inviting range of drinks to accompany your meal. Competitively priced, to meet all budgets you can be confident to find a most enjoyable meal. We will return!
Lovely food with free entertainment!
We were staying in Middlesbrough as travelling football fans and stumbled upon this restaurant by chance because it was round the corner from where we were staying. We walked in about 6:30pm without booking and could see 2 people just about to leave so it looked as though we would be in luck. On entering, we saw a man that worked there walking towards us so we asked if we could have a table for 3. As for the response, I honestly couldn’t tell you what it was but what I can say is that after a good 2 or 3 mins of arms waving in the air, fast talking and lots of animation, we were shown to a table. For those that have been to this restaurant, this was our first introduction to ‘Jamal’. As we now know, Jamal is the owner/chef/waiter/bar man/pot wash etc etc and he is quite a character! He did explain (shout) that all food was cooked fresh by him and that basically we would get it when he had cooked it, and no sooner. We were happy with this and by this point we had kind of worked out that he was a man who was very passionate about his business but also, probably had a very high blood pressure! Before we ordered any food, 2 more parties arrived who I believe had pre-boked (a couple and a party of 6). We heard Jamal give them the same speel we had already heard and they all seemed quite familiar with his ‘personality’, I guess they were regulars to the restaurant. They hadn’t been sat down many minutes when both parties chatted to us, they clearly picked up on our Essex accents and realised we weren’t from the area and told us that Jamal’s was the best Indian food in town. They were not wrong! Whilst the review of the actual food is short and sweet, I feel it’s very important to set the scene. Our food arrived and it was hot and delicious but we seriously over ordered – we never learn! Jamal kindly offered to box it up for us to take home but with a 4 hours drive back the next day, we politely declined. Price wise, I’d guess it was probably average for the area, if not quite reasonable (6 poppadoms, 3 rices, 3 mains, 3 naans, 2 pints of cobra and a coke for about £80). We noticed the tables that came in after us had to wait a bit longer to eat but this was explained on arrival so I don’t think anybody can object to that. What made it even more entertaining was the young male waiter, who didn’t seem to be trusted by Jamal to take food orders, pour drinks or work out the bill.. poor guy looked bored out of his brain most of the time we were there. All in all, a lovely meal, surrounded by lovely locals (special mention to Damian and Becky if you read this, sorry but we didn’t catch the names of the party of 6 who were equally as lovely). Be prepared, the hospitality could come across as brash if you don’t know Jamal’s little ways, we found it all very amusing though. If our team face Middlesbrough again next season, we will be back to Jamal’s without hesitation, although hopefully he’ll be on the chill pills by then.
Horrendous attitude towards customers
We visited this restaurant for my husbands birthday, we phoned directly and booked a table with Jamal. When we arrived he was hysterically shouting and telling us that he was too busy! We are used to this, he moans about this every single time!! This time though, there were 3 tables in - all sat in shock as he was shouting and balling at us! We tried to explain that we had a table booked as we were confused but he was swinging his arms around. We walked out embarrassed. I wrote an honest review as we were so disappointed and he responded by calling us rubbish customers and we don’t understand. No we don’t understand, hire more staff, don’t take bookings or close your restaurant. As speaking to paying customers like that is not acceptable!!
